2016 Chicago Co-Ed – Week 1 (June 6)

Updated: June 9, 2016

Year 5 of the Chicago Co-Ed League has officially begun!  All Sports Series is embarking on it’s 7th Summer and the Chicago Co-Ed League has become the signature Co-Ed League throughout the Year. Before we get to the Week 1 action, let’s do a brief overview of the competitors this Summer..  The Co-Ed League has 10 strong Teams..

Returning of course, the Defending Champions, Team Wolter who look to become the second group to go Back2Back in the Chicago Co-Ed League (Team Bartlett did it in ’12 and ’13).  Then, there’s Team Hakimian (aka Team Lazarov a year ago) who are the Runners-Up from a year ago.. They are also the most storied Franchise in All Sports Series history. More on that below.. Also returning is the University of Michigan Alumni group and a portion of the Free Agents from a year ago Captained by Jeff Lake.  We have a few Teams that are new to this particular Co-Ed League but are no strangers to All Sports Series.. Team Mortier led by Captain Emily are entering their first Summer League and Team Sternberg led by Captain Sam finds themselves in the same boat. Team Gordon is comprised of Rookies on the girls side but the guys have been very successful in past All Sports Series Leagues, they even hold a few Championships.  We also have a few Rookie squads.. Team Stratton, Team Reef, and  Team Loewenstein!  It’s going to be a great Summer!

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-6 with the 4 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (<– Click right there!)   Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Summer Leagues > Chicago Co-Ed League.. Everything you’d need from Stats to Schedules to Standings etc. will be found there..

One more thing before we get to the Power Rankings, our MVP Sponsor for the Chicago Summer Leagues is none other than Live Clean Chicago! They are the best Cleaning Service in Chicago bar none and more importantly you can trust them to clean your place (even if you aren’t home). Myself and my family (Holden) use them frequently!  One more brief mention as it’s likely you will want to know..   The Cubs are officially BACK and  Wrigley View Rooftop has you covered! There is no better experience for getting Cubs action while enjoying the perks of all you can eat/drink!

OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Wolter (Danley’s Garage World) – Currently tied for 2nd with 9 points.

Where to begin the 2016 Power Rankings than with the Defending Champs?!  This group ascended quickly last summer as Rookies led by Captain Jeff Wolter and before long they were favorites for the Crown.. They’d eventually grab the #1 overall seed prior to the Playoffs and left a wake of destruction en route to their first Championship.  Much of the core remains intact from last Season as they try to do what many have tried and only a couple Teams have been able to do.. Go Back2Back. They’ll have Dodgeball against Team Loewenstein next week!

2. Team Hakimian (Hakimian Imports) – Currently tied for 2nd with 9 points.

All Sports Series vets are all too familiar with the Hakimian/Lalez/Dorfman/Lazarov Franchise.  It’s been made very clear for years, this is the original Dynasty of All Sports Series and for great reason..  As a unit they hold 4 Championships and three more Championship Game appearances.  All 4 Championships do come in Men’s Leagues and they are looking to grab their first Co-Ed Crown this Summer.  Last year, they finished as Runners-Up for the second time in the Co-Ed League and they’ve been awaiting their chance to avenge that loss.. There has been some off-season roster moves with this group.. Moving to California are mainstays (and former Captain) Ben Lazarov and his wife Danielle as well as Eytan Azaria.  They are going to look a lot different than a year ago, but it’s not all subtractions..  They have brought back Tara Steinbauer back into the fold.. She was with them during their run to the Championship Game in 2013 before branching off on her own and claiming a Championship with Team Albanese in 2014.   They have their sights set on Team Wolter for sure.. Next week they’ll tangle with Team Reef in Dodgeball.

3. Team Stratton (Chicago Trolley) – Currently in 1st with 15 points.

Our first true Rookie squad checks in at #3 this week.. Team Stratton may have to wait a few weeks to jump into one of the Top 2 spots in the Rankings, as someone will have to knock off last season’s Championship combatants before they give up their spots… More importantly, they leave Week 1 in sole position of first place in the Standings!  We didn’t see their entire roster on Opening Night but if Monday was any indication we might have a new powerhouse on our hands.. Next week they’ll face the UM Alumni group in Dodgeball!

t-4. Teams Lake (Orunje) & Mortier (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 4th with 6 points.

It’s extremely fitting that these two Teams were matched-up with each other during Week 1 and ended with  both Teams getting 6 points a piece.. Both squads have a tremendous amount in common.. Both Teams are led by All Sports Series vets — Jeff Lake and Emily Mortier — both of whom are breaking out from former Free Agent Teams to lead their own squads this Summer.. Both groups are tremendously deep and athletic.. It’ll be no surprise to see either of them holding the Crown in August.  Both Teams can do it all and it’s going to be fun to see them jockey for position and race to catch the Teams Ranked in the Top 3.. The top half of the Co-Ed League is absolutely stacked this Summer!  Dodgeball is up next for both Teams in Week 2.

6. Team Reef (TOW Caps) – Currently tied for 4th with 6 points.

Team Reef is another one of the Rookie squads to grab hold of a Top 6 spot following Week 1.  They do have a leg up on other Rookie Teams however.. Much was said above in the Team Hakimian section about former Captain Ben Lazarov and the all the success they’ve mounted.. Well, Ben’s sister Lindsey is making her All Sports Series debut as a part of Team Reef.. Can only mean great things!  This is a group comprised of smaller groups so it may take some time for them to reach their full potential but they walked away from Week 1 with enough points to be tied for a spot in the top half of the Standings.. Not too shabby for their first Game!  Week 2 they’ll turn to Dodgeball and face #2 Team Hakimian in the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order

Team Gordon (the Karyn Collection) – Currently tied for 7th with 0 points.

Full disclosure, Captain Carly is my (Holden) first cousin.  Now that journalistic integrity has been restored… Team Gordon has a very promising season ahead of them.. They are Team with a few different smaller groups who are banding together for the 2016 Season. Captain Carly and her girl friends are joined by Mike Kowalczyk and co. (who have both Floor Hockey and Kickball Championships to their name) and Nick Block and co.  Nick has been a Captain in All Sports Series before as well.   Expect them to fair very well in Dodgeball next week!

Team Loewenstein (Teplitz & Bell) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

This is another cast of Rookies led by Jen Loewenstein..  Many around All Sports Series will be familiar with the Loewenstein name as her brother Judd has been a key cog for Team Watts over the years and also a valued member of the staff.  Also, you will see cousin Alex reffing Floor Hockey out there this Summer as well. They met Team Stratton who seems to be a top contender early on in Week 1.. They look to bounce back in Dodgeball when they face Defending Champs Team Wolter.  Welcome to the League!

Team Sternberg (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 8th with 0 points.

The true Team Sternberg will be ready to go for Week 2 Dodgeball. More on them next week!

Team UM Alumni (Al’s Beef on Western) – Currently in 7th with 3 points.

Back for their second year in All Sports Series is the University of Michigan Alumni group of Chicago.. Ann Arbor is a hot spot for All Sports Series right now as we just finished up our first League in A2 for the Spring Semester. Team ZBT Seniors took home the Crown in a packed 12 Team Field.. Anyways, back to Co-Ed League.. Casandra Pagni is the Captain once again and this year she has a mostly new cast of characters who are already on a better pace than last summer 🙂   They picked up a VBall win on Monday Night and it’s clear that we’ve had a talent infusion for them in 2016!  They look to make up some ground on the top of the Standings when they face off with Team Stratton in Dodgeball in Week 2.

That’s it for Week 1! Have a great weekend and see everyone on Monday!
