2016 Chicago Flag Football – Week 3 (Sept. 22)

Updated: September 27, 2016

Another gorgeous night in Chicago for Week 3 on Thursday evening… We saw Team Guggenheim officially pull away from everyone in the League as they become the final unbeaten Team at 3-0.  Team Apuli had a statement W by soundly defeating Team Massel and tied them in the Standings at 2-1.  We saw a lot of big numbers put on the board as well including the floodgates opening for Team Murphy in their first W in Franchise history.  More on all of this below in the Power Rankings.

Power Rankings

1) Team Guggenheim (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 3-0

We have a juggernaut on our hands gentlemen. These guys are the real deal and it seems like they are only pulling further and further away from the pack with each week.  QB1 Jeff Nault had himself a day adding 5 more TD passes to his League Lead.  He hit 3 different Receivers for scores on Thursday Night.. Charlmers Oscar pulled in a hat trick and Rick Loisi and Captain Gugges also got in on the scoring party.. Rick went down with a knee injury late in this one, hopefully he is better soon!  Their Defense has been even better than the Offense as they pitched a shutout in Week 3.  These guys are already counting down the days until Thursday.

 2) Team Apuli (Sarkis Café) – 2-1

They are up to #2 this Week, their highest Ranking of the season, after a dominating performance this past Thursday over the former #2 Team Massel.   They won 20-0 and honestly it felt at times like that margin was even bigger.  QB1 Michael Glink tossed a couple TDs in this one and ran for another.. Michael Matasar pulled in a score her.  Their Defense was on point all night. The pass rush has been crippling the opposing Teams in the past two outings and it seems like they have certainly put Week 1 behind them.  They are the top contenders to knock off Team Guggenheim at this point.

3) Team Massel (Al’s Beef ON WESTERN) – 2-1

Down a spot this week after a rough Loss to Team Apuli in Week 3.  Let’s look at the positives though.. They have already had a very difficult schedule.. All 3 of their opponents are currently ranked in the Top-6 with two of those against the two Teams they are currently tied with at 2-1. Their Week 1 W over Team Schwartz appears bigger and bigger with each passing Week. Those tiebreakers are huge come Playoff seeding time.. This is a group of vets and they will be just fine.

4) Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 2-1

Two Wins in a row has Team Schwartz firmly planted in the #4 spot. They looked fantastic on Thursday Night. They totaled 43 points in this one and that matches Team Guggenheim’s Week 1 effort for the most points scored in a Game this Season.  QB1 Ryan Morris threw for a handful of TDs and his favorite target Alex Rubin for a few of them.. Rubin also took a pick-6 to the house. Jon Rosenberg and Captain Matt also hauled in TD receptions.  They have a lot of confidence right now and rightfully so.. They are a couple of plays away in Week 1 from being Undefeated.

5) Team Rasky (Biaggi’s) – 2-1

If any Team is to have a gripe this Week with the Rankings it is Team Rasky. They currently sit at 2-1 just like the Teams Ranked 2 through 4 but they still sit at #5.  They also hold a W over current #2 Team Apuli.. However, they lost last Week to #4 Team Schwartz and essentially someone had to get the short end of the stick.  They have had a flare for the dramatic in the first three weeks as it seems their Games could have gone to the wire every time they take the field.. They found the right side of a close one with Team Hrusocky on Thursday. Cody Davis tossed a few TDs and Brian Gutt iced the Game with an interception to hault the go-ahead drive from Hrusocky and co. This was a great Team W.

6) Team  Murphy (ShopHouse) – 1-2

First W in Franchise history and first time in the Rankings.  They had a heck of a night and you can expect them to be a much better Team moving forward.  They were dominant on Thursday Night. Their Defense had been strong in the first two weeks and then in Week 3 the Offense caught up and in a big way. QB and Captain Jack tossed 5 TDs on the night with Marty Finnegan and Mike Barbati grabbing a score each.. Kevin Finnegan hauled in 3 TDs in a great Game.  This is a group that is going to wipe away any signs of their 0-2 start and soon..

7) Team Hrusocky (Campus View) – 1-2

They were in it for most of their contest with Team Rasky and had the ball with a chance to get a go-ahead TD late but just couldn’t finish off the drive. Their Defense played well for the most part against a complete Team Rasky attack. Captain Brian got into the endzone as did Tommy Bowman in this one.  This group is still getting integrated with one another and they were missing a couple key pieces on Thursday Night. Expect a bounce back from them shortly.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Nolan (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 1-2

Team Saltzberg (Live Clean Chicago) – 1-2

They are improving.  Their Offense has been just fine all season and their Defense is getting more and more sound with each passing Week.  They may consider shaking it up on the Defensive end just to get Teams out of rhythm Offensively.  Alex Stoller accounted for a few TDs on Thursday Night as he ran for one and threw a couple more. Arrow is pointing up for them.

Team Wolter (Schweitzer Title Agency) – 1-2

Had the unenviable task of taking on Team Guggenheim on Thursday Night. What are you going to do? Those guys are just really humming right now..  They hit a hard part of their schedule as in the past two weeks, they’ve played the Teams currently ranked #1 and #2 in the League.. The bright side of that? Well, it’s over now. The schedule will only get easier. This is a good Team and they are going to show it in the next few weeks!

That’s it for Week 3. See everyone for Week 4 on Thursday Night!
