2016 Chicago Flag Football – Week 5 (Oct. 6)

Updated: October 13, 2016

Week 5 is in the books! We luckily were able to sneak the Games in last Week between some sketchy weather and some Teams were certainly happy that we did.  Team Guggenheim (pictured above) got to 5-0 and continue to impress every time they take the field.. Their quest for an Undefeated season will not come easy though.. They will finish the Regular Season with Teams Rasky and Apuli.. Both are 4-1 and currently tied for 2nd in the Standings.  Which means that seeding is going to certainly come down to the final set of Games up and down the Standings.. More on that next week when we do a Playoff Scenarios piece.

Power Rankings

1. Team Guggenheim (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 5-0

As mentioned at the top, Team Guggenheim got to an unreal 5-0 start on Thursday evening. Maybe more importantly, they escaped without adding to their growing Injured List. Also, they got their fifth Win against a really good opponent in Team Schwartz, who came into the Week at 3-1 and #3 in the Rankings. QB1 Jeff Nault added 3 TD passes to his season total and rushed in another.. He hit 3 different Receivers for 6.. Jeffrey Oscar, Captain Max and Derek Reinglass.  It was a full team effort and it really seems like they are firing on all cylinders. They are going to be tested again by #3 Team Rasky in Week 6 and that will be the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week!

2. Team Apuli (Sarkis Cafe) – 4-1

Their W-streak is now up to 4.  QB Michael Glink had himself a day.. Totaling 5 TD passes on the night. He hit Adam Berzon for a couple as well as Jake Miller and Scott Harris. This Offense is really clicking as they have been over the 30pt mark in 3 of these 4 Ws.  Their lone blemish came to #3 Team Rasky and in the next couple of weeks those tiebreakers are going to be extremely important.. They have a tough task with #4 Team Schwartz on Thursday Night in what will serve as the co-Main Event of the evening.. If they can take care of business, there’s a chance there would either be a 3-way tie for first (if Rasky beats Guggenheim) or they can be in sole possession of second and a Game back of Guggenheim (if Guggenheim beats Rasky), and with a Week 7 Rivalry match-up with Team Guggenheim looming.. What a finish to the Regular Season!

3. Team Rasky (Biaggi’s) – 4-1

They keep on getting Wins as evidenced by their 4-1 mark.  This past Win gets them to 3 in a row and they are looking as good as they have all season coming into their clash with #1 Team Guggenheim in Week 6. Cody Davis completed 3 more TD passes this past week.. He hit Captain Alex for one and Todd Kovin for 2 more in the end zone.  Their Defense has really been on point lately as well. They held Team Nolan to just 6 points on the night.. This Game coming up is the biggest of their season thus far.  A Win can put them in place to be the #1 overall seed when the Playoffs begin in a couple of weeks.

4. Team Schwartz (SLA Insurance) – 3-2

They had their 3-Game Winning Streak snapped in Week 5 at the hands of Undefeated #1 Team Guggenheim. They played them tough in the first half but just couldn’t keep up as the Game wore on.. They were without a few key pieces though including QB Ryan Morris who led the League in TD passes prior to Week 5. Jon Sider filled in admirably and hit Alex Rubin for the first score of the Game. This is a much different group at full strength and it would be fun to see a Playoff Rematch between the two.. They have a ton at stake this coming Thursday Night as well as they take on #2 Team Apuli.. A win keeps them in the running for top seeds while dropping another one will push them back down to the .500 mark before the final week of the Regular Season.  Lots on the line.

5. Team Massel (Al’s Beef On WESTERN) – 3-2

Back on the right track this Week is Team Massel. They came out of the gates hot but cooled off in Weeks 3 and 4 with Losses to Teams Apuli and Rasky. They picked up a big-W (largest margin of victory for any Game this Season) by defeating Team Wolter 40-0. They were eager to get back in the Win column and that certainly showed. QB Brian Zohn threw 5 Touchdowns in Week 5 and hit Jason Wenk for 3 of them.  They will finish their season with #6 Team Nolan and then #7 Team Hrusocky. Both Teams currently trail them by a Game in the Standings, so the final two weeks have significant importance for Team Massel.  They also have a chance to gain ground on the Top Teams in the Standings as those groups will play each other down the stretch.. They can still land a top seed before the Playoffs begin.

6. Team Nolan (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 2-3

Ran into a determined Team Rasky squad on Thursday Night and just couldn’t get enough on the Offensive end to keep up.  Alex Jiminez hit Michael Cummings for the lone score in this one.. They are still in a prime position to rise in the Standings over the final couple of weeks.. They play Team Massel in Week 6. A Win over them would bring them into a tie in the Standings (and they’d hold the head to head tiebreaker). They close the Season in Week 7 with the struggling Team Wolter.  These guys can get over .500 before the Playoffs and come in with some dangerous momentum!

7. Team Hrusocky (Campus View) – 2-3

Last Team into the Rankings this week is Team Hrusocky following their W on Thursday Night.  They are now 2-3 on the season and still have a shot at getting over .500 before the Regular Season concludes. This group is now 2-0 with Ross Lehrman at QB and that is likely where they will turn for the remainder of the season.. He hit a couple different targets for scores in this back and forth Game with Team Murphy. Captain Brian had a key INT at one point as well. They get Team Wolter in Week 6. Can they keep up the MO?

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Murphy (ShopHouse) – 1-4

Team Murphy blew up in Week 3 for 40 points and their first Win of the season. Then, they gave Undefeated #1 Team Guggenheim their toughest test this season, losing by a score in Week 4.  They were primed for a big Win in Week 5 against Team Hrusocky but just fell short. Their Defense was stellar once again but they just couldn’t punch in enough scores.  Their record says 1-4. This Team is far better than their record indicates and any Team who takes them likely down the stretch or in the Playoffs will be upset with themselves.  They close with Team Saltzberg who they are tied with in the Standings and then and #4 Team Schwartz to finish the Season.

Team Saltzberg (Live Clean CHI) – 1-4

It was hard to tell as they were up against #2 Team Apuli in Week 5 but this was the most dangerous version of Team Saltzberg that we’ve seen. Throughout the season Shaun Albert and Alex Stoller had traded Games at QB and not actually played together.. That changed this week and they connected for a TD.  They are two dynamic playmakers.. When you factor in Josh Adler’s nose for the end zone and Erik Smason as well.. These guys have a couple of weeks to really get into a rhythm and shock some Teams come Playoff time. You heard it hear first.

Team Wolter (Schweitzer Title Agency) – 1-4

This is one that they’d like to forget.. Unlike the unforgettable 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Anyways, they are on a skid right now since starting the season with a Win in Week 1. They close out the Regular Season with Teams Hrusocky and Nolan.. Both are at 2-3 currently.. That means these guys can control their fate somewhat and if they can turn it around they will leap some Teams in the Standings prior to the Playoffs.

That’s it for Week 5. See everyone soon for Week 6!
