Playoff Review

Opening Round – Single Elimination

7. Team Nelson (Rhoyal Decadence) v. 8. Team Kaplan (Theory)

Both Teams entered the Playoffs with hopes of earning a chance to knock off the beast that is 2. Team Harris in the Quarterfinals.. Only one Team would get that opportunity however.. We expected an even match-up in the Opening Round as these two Teams met a couple weeks back and saw Team Nelson edge out Team Kaplan 6-4 in a hard-fought Game.  8. Team Kaplan has been plagued by depth issues all year as injuries have crept up but they managed to get to full-strength just in time for their Playoff run.. 7. Team Nelson wasn’t able to say the same as they were down a few Players this past Sunday..

8. Team Kaplan had suffered slow starts in most of their Games this Season and they knew they needed to focus on starting fast this past Sunday.. That’s exactly what they did! Before you could blink they had built up a nice lead on Team Nelson!  The Return of Bryan Halpert was a key ingredient in this change as he help set the tone on the Offensive end.. The guy ended with 6 Goals in this Game in a performance that will certainly be remembered.. Chase Gauthier added 4 as well to go with Eric Chapman’s Hat Trick and it was 8. Team Kaplan earning the W and advancing to face 2. Team Harris later in the day.

For 7. Team Nelson, they finish the season a bit earlier than they hoped but they do have a core in place that can compete next year. Captain Nelson knows they need and addition or two come next Spring and it seems he is already working the phones to bolster the squad.  These guys were a pleasure to have play.  Thanks for playing guys!

Quarterfinals – Single Elimination

1. Team Robinson (Schweitzer Title Agency) – BYE

Team Robinson got to sit back and scoreboard week this past week.. They will take on the Winner of the 4/5 Game in the SEMIS on May 1!  Just Remember the SEMIS are “Aggregate Scoring” so the Teams will play Back to Back Games with the combined score being utilized to see who advances to the Championship.

4. Team Kandelman (StudentCity) v. 5. Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley)

In last week’s Playoff Preview we said, “Easily the best matchup of the Quarterfinals should be Kandelman and Holzman and it’s no surprise that comes in the 4/5 Game..” Well.. We were right.  This was without a doubt the Game of the Day.  It’s really upsetting that both Teams couldn’t advance and continue their seasons as both groups displayed so much on Sunday.

The Game started out tight as neither Team really pulled away from the other early.. As the third period began it was still anyone’s Game and that is when 4. Team Kandelman put their foot on the pedal.. They got the lead up to 10-7 in the 3rd and it seemed that they were closing in on the W.. 5. Team Holzman is not the type of group to give up and began to mount a comeback. 10-8.  10-9.  With under a minute to go, there was a frantic pace as Team Holzman had 6 guys out on the attack trying to tie the Game.  Captain Scott Kandelman helped weather the storm in net and when the final buzzer sounded it was 4. Team Kandelman holding on to the 10-9 W and moving on to face 1. Team Robinson in the SEMIS!  Tyler Edwards of Team Holzman, Derreck Korbecki and Matthew Lee of Team Kandelman all turned in 3-Goal Games.  It was just a great game.

For 5. Team Holzman, they leave in the Quarters in heartbreaking fashion for the 2nd year in a row.. Truth be told they’ve had tough matchups to start both Playoff runs each year and it’s only a matter of time until they get a break in terms of seeding.. An extra win or two in the Regular Season could make all the difference.. This group has enough to Win the whole thing.. Captain Andrew will be back this Summer as he leads a Team in the Chicago Co-Ed All Sports League. Thanks for playing guys!

3. Team Kowalczyk (popchips) v. 6. Team Weisel (SLA Insurance)

Safe to say that when the Schedule comes out next year, both Teams will circle their Game against one another in big Red Marker (hypothetically, the Schedule will be online).  Also, safe to say.. These two Teams will likely not be exchanging holiday cards.. This was the third time that their paths crossed in 2016. The previous meetings were both physical and that carried right into this Quarterfinal Game from the initial drop.

6. Team Weisel jumped out to an early lead which sort of surprised the Defending Champs.  We ended the 1st period knotted at 3 in what was an extremely chippy opening session. As the second period wore on, the Champs stretched their lead thanks in large part to Captain Mike and his 4 Goal Game.  3. Kowalczyk decided to shake-up the Goalie position for the Playoff stretch — a unique idea — considering Drew Bienhoff was between the pipes winning the Championship a year ago.. After the switch, Kevin Economos, found himself in net and definitely did a stellar job of thwarting several stellar rushes from the Weisel Offense.  When all was said and done 3. Team Kowalczyk would advance.. They will take on 2. Team Harris during the SEMIS on May 1 in a Rematch from last year’s Championship.

For 6. Team Weisel, they leave a frustrated Team that was dealt a tough card with the Defending Champs in the Quarters.  They are a very talented bunch that had several highlights in their debut season.. This is a group that has all potential in the world and without any changes could be a top seed a year from now. Sometimes it just takes a season to really take off.. Guys like Captain Josh and Yosef Schwartz are point getters that are hard to come by.  This core has what it takes.  Thanks for playing guys!

2. Team Harris (Wrigley View Rooftop) v. 8. Team Kaplan (Theory)

Before this Game even started both squads knew that a potential date with the Defending Champs Team Kowalczyk awaited the Winner.. That little extra fuel may have been key for 2. Team Harris who have waited a year to avenge their Championship heartbreak from last Spring.. 8. Team Kaplan entered with the momentum of tasting victory for the first time all year just minutes earlier..

Simply put, the Team Harris attack is just nuts.  They come in waves and never relent. Alex Hayman and Jason Shape each had 4 Goals. The Hammonds combined for 7 Goals as well.  That’s a lot of Goals folks.. It was just too much for Team Kaplan to deal with in their second Game of the Day and 2. Team Harris moves on!  They get their wish and will take on 3. Team Kowalczyk in a 2GM set with a spot in the Championship on the line!

For 8. Team Kaplan, they bow out in the Quarters but at least got to leave Sunday with a Playoff W on their mantle. That’s the type of thing you can build upon. They added several pieces this season and if they give this group of guys time to gel they may really have something.. They could use one or two more to bolster depth but they certainly don’t lack talent.  We hope to see them back soon! Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the Quarters.  Congrats to those taking part in the SEMIS on May 1 and thanks again to the Teams who finished up this past week!
