2016 Chicago Floor Hockey – Week 1 (Feb. 21)

Updated: February 25, 2016

We are officially back for the All Sports Series’ 2nd installment of the Chicago Floor Hockey League!  Week 1 provided plenty of ammunition for our first Power Rankings but before we get to those, a few things..  Once again there are 8 Teams in 2016 we are basically bringing back the whole crew from 2015.. Returning are of course, the Defending Champs, Team Kowalczyk.  Along with them come 2015 Runners-Up, Team Harris… Semi-Finalists Team Kandelman (last year’s Team Widen) and Team Robinson (last year’s Team Albanese) also return.. Team Holzman is back with some new faces.  Last year’s Free Agent Team have splintered into 2 Teams for 2016.. Team Nelson and Team Kaplan.. Both have a core who competed a year ago.. Finally, rounding out the 8 Teams, are the only true Rookies — Team Weisel.. Who certainly know how to make an impression…

For those playing in their first All Sports Series League, this is what you can expect from the weekly Power Rankings article.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams  and Rank them 1-5 with the remaining UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. Power Rankings

1. Team Kowalczyk (popchips) – 1-0, Currently tied for 1st

Where to start the 2016 season but right where we left off with the Defending Champs sitting atop the Floor Hockey world?  The Kowalczyk brothers and co. are back and are after what very few franchises in All Sports Series have ever done.. Go Back2Back.  Their quest to Repeat started off in impressive fashion as they took on what will be a strong Team Kaplan squad and defeated them 14-3. Captain Mike started the year off on a torrid pace, accounting for 4 Goals and 4 helpers in Week 1. Brother Matt Kowalczyk, Sam Patterson and Ryan Liebman also netted hat tricks on opening day.. Spencer Hadelman was great in between the pipes as well.. This is a group that is going to be atop the Power Rankings and the Standings for the foreseeable future. Want that to change?  Beat ’em.

2. Team Robinson (Schweitzer Title) – 1-0, Currently tied for 1st

The #2 spot is where we had our first truly interesting Ranking of the Season.. Had Team Harris gotten a W in Week 1, as the Runners-Up a year ago, they would have slotted in here.. However, they didn’t and instead, the Team that defeated them on on opening day comes in at #2.. It was an extremely impressive start for Team Robinson (formerly Team Albanese).  They were a tough out last year as they were just moments from the Championship Game..  They took it to Team Harris for the majority of the Game, getting out to a big lead early.. The scariest aspect about Team Robinson is their great depth.. They scored 9 Goals against a Team that went to Overtime in the Championship a year ago and got those 9 Goals from 7 different goal scorers.. They are among the favorites to take the whole thing.

3. Team Kandelman (StudentCity) – 1-0, Currently tied for 1st

Team Kandelman (formerly Team Widen) is no stranger to being Ranked in the Top 3 of the Floor Hockey Power Rankings.  It’s the exact position they found themselves in last year before getting all the way to the Semis where they got oh so close to the Championship.. They are among the League’s elite and will continue to gather Wins as the season kicks into gear.. Captain Scott is one of the league’s best in net and that goes a long way especially against the significant competition that exists on Sunday afternoons. Steve Prioletti started the season off nicely on Offense with a couple of Goals to help his Team secure the 9-7 W against Team Holzman.  Great start to 2016.

4. Team Harris (Wrigley View Rooftop) – 0-1, Currently tied for 5th

How does a Team that lost in Week 1 get into the Top 4 you ask?  Well, when your Team Harris, you’ve earned a bit of equity around here.. As mentioned before Captain Adam and co. went the distance in last year’s Championship with Team Kowalczyk and they are determined to actually hold the Crown in 2016.  Did they start off their campaign the way they wanted? No.  Does it really mean a whole lot in their pursuit of the Crown? Let’s just say, they’ll be just fine… They made a couple of key acquisitions in the off-season including Jason Shape who had a hat trick in his first Game with Team Harris.  They look to get their first W of the season against #3 Team Kandelman next week.

5. Team Weisel (SLA Insurance) – 1-0, Currently tied for 1st

And finally in at #5 is the newcomers – Team Weisel. If any single Team has a gripe with the Week 1 Power Rankings it will be them, and rightfully so.. Here’s the deal.. They were simply fantastic in their All Sports Series’ debut.  They attack on multiple fronts. They have crazy depth and they play as a unit.  They dominated the puck during their Game with Team Nelson and as a result they left Week 1 with the Most Goals scored (15) and fewest Allowed (1).. Captain Joshua led the offensive brigade with 5 Goals. Yosef Schwartz had himself a day too with a hat trick and 4 assists.  Ben Kramer accounted for 2 goals and 2 helpers as well.  So why are they coming in at #5?  Well, those top spots in the Power Rankings are earned and while it was as an impactful of a Week 1 as you can have.. We need to see it over the course of a few weeks… Building on it with another Win in Week 2 against Team Kaplan would certainly be a step in that direction.. Well done gentlemen!

Team Kaplan (Theory) – 0-1, Currently tied for 5th

Team Kaplan had the unenviable task of taking on the Defending Champs in Week 1. Not an easy task, to say the least.. Captain Ryan and co. are made up of a core that played under the Team Free Agent banner a year ago.. From that group, is Chase Gauthier, Bryan Halpert and Sam Witt.. They will provide plenty of offensive punch as the season moves along.. They are going to get the Rookies Team Weisel in Week 2 and it will serve as a nice barometer for both Teams as squads are jockeying for position early in the season.. They are going to improve a great deal as we move ahead. Welcome back.

Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley & Double Decker Co.) – 0-1, Currently tied for 5th

Many will remember Team Holzman from a year ago as the group that played with the “6 out” Offense for a large part of the season.. They correctly assessed that they had the stick-handlers to utilize a consistent power play and their Defense was strong enough to keep the ball away from their Goal..  To start the season, they decided to go with the conventional and actually use a Goalie.. It will certainly be a storyline to keep an eye on.. They came up just a bit short on Sunday after providing a big 3rd period comeback against Team Kandelman. This group started slowly a year ago as well before ripping off several in a row down the stretch.. Don’t sleep on them. #2 Team Robinson is up next in what will be Rematch of their epic 3-Game Quarterfinal series from a year ago..

Team Nelson (Rhoyal Decadence) – 0-1, Currently tied for 5th

Final group this week (again, Alphabetically) is Team Nelson.  Captain Paul split from last year’s Free Agents and brings forth some new faces to mesh with the Futterer Brothers.. This is a group that was a bit undermanned on Sunday. With only 5 skaters they just couldn’t keep up with the full court press that Team Weisel had waiting for them.. Best to just move on and look ahead.. This is a group that will be much better than what they showed on their first Sunday and with time will gain more chemistry as well.  They take on Defending Champs Team Kowalczyk next week.. Almost better to get it out of the way early, while they are still figuring things out as a unit and they’ll be better served against others later on down the road.. Welcome Back!

That’s it for the Week 1 Power Rankings. Have a great week and rest up for Week 2!
