2016 Suburbs College/Prep – Week 1 (June 15)

Updated: June 19, 2016

On Wednesday Night, All Sports Series’ Suburbs College/Prep League began it’s 7th Summer!  The League is stacked with 16 Teams and it seems like there are plenty of groups capable of holding the Crown at season’s end.. There is a lot to get to in the Summer’s first Power Rankings but before we really dive into Week 1, lets refresh everyone’s memories (or enlighten the Rookies) on how we got here.. Also, here’s a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video!

Team Kollada is back for their second Summer and this season they wear the badge of Defending Champs!  They won last Summer as Rookies, a feat that has only been done by a very select few groups in the entire All Sports Series network.. Also, back for their second Summer are Final4 groups from a year ago.. Team Zisook and Team Sutker both of whom had impressive Week 1s and are hoping to grab the Crown in August.   Other second year Teams include Team Herz, Team Fialkow and Team Gerszonovicz.

There are also of course Teams have called the College/Prep League home for many, many Summers.. Team Gordon and Team Wellek (formerly Team Levin) are back in 2016 and hoping to build off their Elite8 runs from a year ago..  Team Randall Pulfer’s group is back (formerly Team Rijos/Prizant) and they are a group that has also been to a College/Prep League Championship Game.. Team Kauss (formerly Team Nelson) hails from Lake Forest and was the overall #1 seed a year ago.. They are looking to make right on getting stunned in the Elite8 by eventual Champs Team Kollada.

We also have a few groups that are led by Captains who play in their Campus Leagues.. Team Arenson is a group who plays in the Bloomington League in the Fall and taking their first spin together in the College/Prep League this Summer.. Also, Captain Dan Maentz who plays in Ann Arbor is leading a group of relative newcomers into All Sports Series.. Team Sledd is playing in their first All Sports Series as a unit but have All Sports Series vets on the Roster.. They are a group to watch as the Summer moves forward.

Finally, we have a few true Rookie squads.. Like Team Baum who are just graduating from Deerfield HS. They hope to repeat what Team Kollada did a year ago.. We also have Team Reece Pulfer who look strong .. We also have Team Free Agent who are now 1-0 and may take some Teams by surprise this Summer!

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-11 with the 5 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Kollada (Sushi Kushi Too) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

No where to start but with the Defending Champs.  Co-Captains Mike Kollada and John Phipps are trying to lead their crew to the very rare Back2Back All Sports Series crowns.. Teams doing that in their first two years in the League is virtually unheard of as well.. They got off to a less than ideal start on Wednesday Night when they met with Team Zisook who was also a Final4 crew a year ago.. It’s going to take more than a Week 1 L to drop them from the #1 spot in the Rankings but the margin of error has been lessened and there’s a host of Teams looking to knock them from that top spot!  The targets are firmly on their backs..

2. Team Zisook (First Bank of HP) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

Captain Evan and co. are back for their second stint in All Sports Series and considering they got to extra innings in the Final4 it’s safe to say they are ready to get back on the court/field!  On Wednesday Night they took a big first step toward the Crown as they defeated Defending Champs Team Kollada in what was the cea Study Abroad Game of the Night!  David Sachs had 24 points and Brandon Krawetz had 20 on Opening Night.  Is this is a group who will be at or near the top of both the Power Rankings and Standings all Summer long!

3. Team Kauss (TOW Caps) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

Team Kauss (last year’s Team Nelson) are very familiar with being near the top of the Power Rankings… A year ago they came into the Playoffs as the #1 overall seed.  They’ve had to wait 10 long months to get back to All Sports Series to avenge their Elite8 L and on Wednesday Night they took out that aggression on Team Gerszonovicz. These guys put up ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN POINTS in Hoops. 113! Are you kidding?  Ryan Bender had one of the best performances you’ll see all Summer long as he went for 46. Matthew Talbot chipped in a mere 25 as well.  These guys are the real deal and it seems like they are on a mission..

4. Team Sutker (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

For the first time in the Rankings, we turn to a Team that was on the gridiron in Week 1.. There was no question who the topped Ranked Team coming out of Flag Football would be when we exited Wednesday Night.. Team Sutker put on an absolute show as they won 58-0 and welcomed Team Baum to the League. Cole Greenberg stands alone as the League Leader in TDs with 5 (passing/rushing).  These guys didn’t get enough credit in their run to the Final4 a year ago and it seems they are determined to make sure everyone is aware of their presence in 2016. Great start.

5. Team Wellek (Poopie Palz) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

Team Wellek (Team Levin the past handful of years) is still under the same management — Co-Captains Nate Wellek and Jeremy Levin and their squad are setting out to finally grab the Crown in 2016.  A few years back they were the youngest guys in the League and now this year they enter as some of the elder statesmen and favorites to take the whole thing..  Tommy Sutker helped get them started in the right way with 3 TDs on Wednesday Night to a few different receivers and Noah Pickus capped off the route with a Pick-6 to end the Game.  They are among the elite this Summer and it will be fun to watch and see if they can finally break on through.

6. Team Herz (StudentCity Red) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

One of the more impressive Ws on Wednesday Night came from Team Herz.  They are entering their second Summer under Captain Eddie’s reign and it seems this year they are looking to really make a splash. They took on a Team that has been to the Championship Game before – Team Randall Pulfer – and pulled away from them in Flag Football.. It was close early but QB Brody Nash was electric on Wednesday Night and Team Herz looked like they might be that “leap” Team this Summer that crashes the party. Welcome back.

7. Team Gordon (Gordon Bros.) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

Entering their SIXTH All Sports Series campaign led by Captain Eric Gordon (editor’s note: my [Holden’s] cousin) this group is fresh off their best outcome yet.. They made it to the Elite8 last Summer before falling to Team Holway (moved to the Chicago League).. This year, they are back and looking to make it even further.  Patrick Scanlon had 18 points in his debut and helped get Team Gordon the W over Team Sledd on Opening Night!

8. Team Fialkow (Baker Boys) – Currently tied for 5th with 15 points.

Team Fialkow is back this year for their second year under Captain Jonah’s watch.  Many of them have played as Team Merritt before that as well.. They were once upon a time, the youngest guys in the League, but now they are among the elite and have a real shot of grabbing the Crown in 2016.  They opened up the Summer with a nice Hoops W over Team Reece Pulfer.  Ben Wiberg had 10 as did Jake Santellano.  They are as deep as any Team in the League and that well come into play as the season wages on!

9. Team Free Agent (StudentCity White) – Currently tied for 1st with 22 points.

Week One. One Win.  Not so bad.

10. Team Randall Pulfer (Once Upon a Bagel) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Team Randall Pulfer enters this season as one of the favorites.  Despite them dropping their first Game of the Season on Wednesday Night they definitely will likely factor into who wins the Championship this Summer.. All of these guys have played in a College/Prep Championship Game before.. Whether with Team Holway last Summer or with Team Rijos a couple years back.. They have a ton of talent and now find themselves as one of the Veteran groups in the League.  Expect a bounce back week soon.

11. Team Maentz (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Rounding out the Top-11 is Team Maentz. This group is comprised of mostly Rookies who got their first taste of All Sports Series on Wednesday Night.  They fell to the Free Agents in the closing moments by one score but showed that they have a very good roster.. This is a group that figures to excel in multiple sports as the season progresses. Drew LaMotte accounted for a couple of scores.  They look to earn their first W next week and climb up the Rankings! Welcome to the League!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Arenson (Spikeball) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Team Arenson is no stranger to All Sports Series.. They were also known as Team ATO JR in the Bloomington League this past Fall. In that League they entered the Playoffs as the #3 Seed and made it all the way to the Final4 in a very competitive League in Btown.. They are going to bounce back from their Week 1 L.. This is a group you should expect to start gathering Ws as we progress through the Summer.

Team Baum (ALX Salon) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Team Baum is one of the only complete Rookie squads in All Sports Series this Summer.. Led by Captain Jordan they are likely going to be an unbelievable Hoops squad and that usually correlates well to other sports as well.. They had a rough debut against Team Sutker but match-ups are very important in All Sports Series and Team Sutker is one of the best Football Teams in the League.. This is a group that will not stay UnRanked for long.. Welcome to the League!

Team Gerszonovicz (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Team Gersonzovicz is entering their second Summer in All Sports Series. They’ve retooled a bit since last summer and have picked up a few members of Team Lutz (on hiatus this Summer due to travel) to round out their squad.. Team Gerszonovicz is an EXTREMELY capable crew.. They are a combo of Team Sammy’s from the Champaign League who finished first in the Regular Season last Fall and they also have members from the 2015 Bloomington League Champions — Team AEPi SO.. They happen to run into Team Kauss in Hoops during Week 1 which is an L for just about everyone but they are going to be talked about with the League’s best before long.

Team Reece Pulfer (Testing Timers) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Another complete Rookie Team is Team Reece Pulfer.  Yes, Reece is brother to All Sports Series vet Randall Pulfer.  If this group can emulate what Randall and co. did as youngsters than they are in great shape! This is a group with some definite talent that may just take a couple of weeks to really shine through.  Captain Reece had 25 on Wednesday Night. He can play.  This group will be just fine! Welcome to the League!

Team Sledd (Sunset Foods) – Currently tied for 9th with 0 points.

Important to note that the Unranked Teams are listed alphabetically.. Had we ranked 12 Teams, Team Sledd would have been in the Rankings at #12.  Not only did they drop a close Hoops Game in Week 1 but they are chalk full of past All Sports Series participants and know exactly what it takes to get the job done. Max Kreiter, Sam Iden, Sam Shrago and Adam Bernstein have all gone through the rigors before.. They also have staff-man turned Player – Chad Fox – making his In-Game debut shortly. These guys will climb into the Rankings in no time!

That’s it for the Week 1 Rankings! See everyone Wednesday Night!
