2016 Chicago Men’s – Week 1 (June 6)

Updated: June 9, 2016

Summer 2016 has officially been launched and on Monday Night the Chicago Men’s League proved once again why it’s THE League in the All Sports Series universe.. There is a lot to get to in the Summer’s first Power Rankings but before we really dive into Week 1, lets refresh everyone’s memories (or enlighten the Rookies) on how we got here..

Believe it or not, All Sports Series is embarking on it’s 7th Summer (and 6th of the Chicago Men’s League).  It all began in the Summer of 2010 and many members of present day Teams are still going strong.. Original-12 Franchises such as Team Kornblatt and the original Dynasty, Team Hakimian (Dorfman/Lalez).  We have Teams embarking on their 6th Summer in the Chicago Men’s League.. Teams Cohen, Apuli and Fallows have been core pieces for a long, long time.. You’ll notice most of those names are sitting atop the Standings after Week 1.  We haven’t even mentioned the two Teams who competed for the 2015 Chicago Men’s League Championship.. Defending Champions Team Zimmerman who in the past 365 days have had more success than any group in All Sports Series. period.

The Runners-Up a year ago, Team Sternberg, were just a couple plays away from the Crown and have comeback this Summer to finish the job.  A number of other groups also return.. Teams who earned Playoff Ws last year and with a bit of luck could have won the whole thing.. Teams Shlofrock and Palmer.  We have a host of Teams making the move from the Suburbs College/Prep League (in Highland Park) and looking to finally compete with the big boys after years of dominating up north.. Team Kaplan (Lehrman) and they are going to be a force this Summer.. Team Valvassori who has had a ton of success in the past handful of years has made the leap as well.. Team Liss is going to shoot some teams out of the building this Summer as they’ve been gearing up for a run in the Men’s League for sometime..

It’s taken too long to address the elephant in the room.. Many see the Team Watts name on the Schedule and the Standings and many of course will look to the 2014 Chicago Men’s League Champs, captained by Jake Watts.. Well, this is the classic good news, bad news situation.. Former Captain Jake has moved cities for Work but his little brother Mack has assumed the Team Watts mantle and alongside him comes what could be the most dynamic roster of any as we begin the 2016 Campaign..  A dark horse to watch especially leaving Monday Night (more on this below) will be Team Rubin, they along with other mostly Rookie Teams – Team Hagari and Team Bohrer – have leadership that has logged All Sports Series seasons in the past.. That leaves us with two complete Rookie squads.. Teams McNichols and Team SpringCM.  Welcome.

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-13 with the 5 UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Zimmerman (STATE) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

As the saying goes.. “To Be The Man (woo!), You Have To Beat The Man.” Well, were just going to tack on a bit to the end of that… To Be The Man, You Have To Beat The Man in something other than Floor Hockey (woo!).   The truth is, yes Team Zimmerman lost their Week 1 Floor Hockey Game to Team Fallows.  You know what is also true?  They are the Defending Champs and they deserve to ring in the new campaign at #1. Don’t like it?  Beat ’em again.  They are going to enter the rest of their Games as favorites. Something that all Defending Champions have to deal with.. They have a big bullseye painted on their back and they are attempting to do what has never been done in the Chicago Men’s League.. Go Back2Back.  They have plenty of time to earn points and a couple weeks from now, very few will remember their Week 1 contest.

2. Team Hakimian (Hakimian Imports) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

There were a few “statement Wins” on Monday Night and one that would have jumped off the page was Team Hakimian’s 32pt W over Team Rubin.. However, Team Hakimian doesn’t make statements in Week 1.. This is the most storied Franchise in All Sports Series history.. They make statements in the Playoffs.  For those new to All Sports Series.. This core won the very first All Sports Series back in the Summer of 2010, they made the Championship Game in the first Chicago Men’s League in 2011 and then followed up in 2012 with a Chicago Men’s League Crown. They were the first group to ever have 2 Championships.  They also have won both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 Chicago Hoops League Championships, becoming the first group to ever win back to back Men’s Leagues in Chicago.  Captain Joe along with Benny Lalez, Dave Gershenzon and Brennan Keller have been along for the ride for a long long time.. But like any Dynasty they need to re-tool from time to time and it seems like they have done that in a big way.. They added Michael Morrissey who had 14 in his debut and All Sports Series vet Brandon Lathon who is one of the best all-around players in the League.  This group got off to a slow start a year ago and they are determined to not make the same mistake twice..

3. Team Fallows (Al’s Beef on Western) – Currently tied for 1st with 0 points.

A Final4 squad in 2015, Team Fallows is coming off their best summer since they were known as Team Glass back in their debut season of 2011.  This is a group that has gotten so close to the Crown numerous times but have yet to grasp it.. They start off this season with a HUGE Floor Hockey W over Defending Champs Team Zimmerman and now hold a share of first place in a leaderboard that will surely have a lot of turmoil over the next couple of months.  David Trilling and Jason Shape both scored a pair of Goals to help get their crew past Team Zimmerman in Week 1. No time to rest however as they are staring at Rivals Team Kornblatt and the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week in Flag Football for Week 2.

4. Team Apuli (Chipotle) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

Not sure if you could have drawn up a sweeter victory for Team Apuli in Week 1..  Captain Justin and co. have been around forever and always play a key roll in who holds the crown, yet they are still searching for their first.. In Week 1 they got a comeback W over Rivals Team Cohen on the Floor Hockey court.. Derek Marks had a hat trick and Jason Widen scored a pair of his own to get Team Apuli the key 5-4 W. They are going to have their hands full next week with Team Shlofrock in Flag Football but they plan on staying in or near the Top 5 all Summer long.

5. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently tied for 1st with 20 points.

One of the Original Teams that All Sports Series was founded on.. Without this group, we wouldn’t be here in 2016, beginning our 7th Summer..  Led by Captain Matthew Kornblatt they are as battle tested as they come.. They’ve experienced many highs and enough lows that there’s nothing that will rattle this core.. Monday Night was the perfect example.. They were down early 3-0 when Matt “the Dominator” Emer decided he was going take over..  He was a wall for them in net over the final 25 minutes of their Floor Hockey Game with Team Shlofrock and did enough to keep his Team in it while the Offense founds it’s legs.. Off-season acquisitions Adam Berzon and David Chaimovitz paid off immediate dividends as they combined for 3 key Goals.. Jeff Weisberg tallied two of his own and core pieces Chris Chez and recently engaged (congrats!) Derek Reinglass also put one in the net to help earn the 7-4 W!  This is a group that has always excelled in non-Hoops sports and they’ve gone out and tried to correct that with the additions of former Captain Jon Horwitz and Adam Ruchim.  This may just be a very special seventh Summer…

6. Team Watts (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

Expectations are a very weird thing.. You see, “Team Watts” holds very significant weight in the Chicago Men’s League.. In 2014, after years of getting within reaching distance of the Championship, Team Watts led by then Captain Jake, finally broke through and defeated Team Zimmerman in what was an epic Flag Football Championship Game.. Last year, as Defending Champs they made it back to the Final4.. Since last Summer, Captain Jake was offered a job out of state and with that the Team Watts we had known for a handful of years was no more.. However, that was not the only Team Watts that had been accruing bragging rights in All Sports Series.. For years now, Captain Mack and his crew have been dominating the Suburbs College/Prep League.  Guys like Eric Porter who had 29 points in Week 1 and Connor Shields and Alex Sacks are all names you better get used to.. These guys got to the Championship Game last Summer in the College/Prep League and are as ready as any Team to make the leap..  They put that on full display Monday Night by putting up 100+ points in their debut. Remember, Team Sternberg a year ago, earned the #1 seed and got to the Championship Game, with a resume/background just like this Team Watts group..  They are for real.

7. Team McNichols (Fontanini Foods) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

Not often you’ll see a Rookie squad this high up in the Rankings after just one week but Captain Chris and co. earned a Top-7 nod after defeating last year’s Runners-Up Team Sternberg in a close 76-73 Hoops contest.  It shows a lot about this bunch.. Even with the format being new to them and the end of Game clock rules not yet second-nature for them, they were able to keep their composure and get the W. Romeo Magloire had 17 points in his debut. This is a group that has enough talent to contend right away and the League’s vets need to take notice..

8. Team Sternberg (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

Similar to Defending Champs, Team Zimmerman, this is a group that has earned the right to be acknowledged in the Top-X amount of Teams from the get go.. They ran through the Regular Season last Summer en route to the Championship Game which they were just 1 or 2 plays away from winning..  They were without Captain Sam on Monday Night and they definitely missed his leadership in a tight Loss to Rookies Team McNichols.. Josh Schur had 30 in this one to go along with Jesse Pollans’ 21 and Max Shulruff’s 20.  This group is well aware of something we always point out after Week 1.. You want to look to the Team that dropped the best Opening Week Game.. That group is clearly talented but will have an early Loss fueling them the rest of the way.. Team Sternberg has a ton going for them and this Loss will do nothing to prevent them from reaching the heights they are striving for.  They will be just fine.

9. Team Liss (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

Another group who is very familiar with All Sports Series but a Team making their debut in the Chicago Men’s League.. Led by Jordan Liss and Jason Teitelbaum these guys have played for years and have experienced a lot of success.. Some will also remember Jordan Liss’ 53pt Game a few Summers ago in the College/Prep League.  These guys can play and they showed that in their 80-47 W over Team Bohrer in Week 1.  Captain Liss had 23 on Opening Night and Zack Hilgendorf put in 18 as well.  They are certainly going to turn some heads by season’s end. Softball is next for them when they take on #10…

10. Team Hagari (Pork & Mindy’s) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

Rounding out the Top-10 is a group of newcomers to the Chicago Men’s League.  Captain Elliot Hagari and Jeff Shukis competed in the most recent Chicago Hoops League however and they know full well of what’s in store.. They looked extremely impressive on their first night as they won by FIFTY against Team SpringCM. Jeff Shukis had 28, Max Schramm had 22, Pauly Jackson had 17 and Captain Elliot scored 13 of his own.. This is a group that is likely not on people’s radar.. yet.  They will try to get to 2-0 against Team Liss in Softball next week!

11. Team Kaplan (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 4th with 13 points.

If any Team is to have a gripe with their Week 1 Ranking it’s Team Kaplan and rightfully so.. These guys won a hard-fought and well-played Hoops Game over Team Valvassori on Monday Night and still enter out of the Top 10.  The truth is when you have both Teams who played for the Championship last season, Lose in Week 1, someone is going to get pushed out of the Top 10.  They have nothing to worry about as they have a core group that is ready to make a name for themselves and fast.  Judd Barron scored 22 in the Win and Zach Aranas had 15. They are led by Captain Justin, Ross Lehrman and Scott Harris who combine for ton of All Sports Series experience both in Champaign and in the Summer College/Prep League.  Everyone would be best serve to start paying attention to them now…

12. Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

Captain Cohen and co. are back for another Summer and they have their eyes on the big prize at the end.. They’ve called the Chicago Men’s League home for 6 Summers now and have been close many times but are still looking for Championship #1..  On Monday Night they had Rivals Team Apuli on the ropes before surrendering the lead late.. Aaron Werner and Marc Krieberg both had 2 Goals in this one.. This is not a group that will be rattled by one Loss. They have another Rival group on the docket for Week 2 — Defending Champs Team Zimmerman in Flag Football — the Loser will fall to 0-2.. It’s a big one.

13. Team Shlofrock (ShopHouse) – Currently tied for 10th with 0 points.

Co-Captain Jake Shlofrock has brought on All Sports Series vet Dan Abramson to help lead the group this Summer.. Team Shlofrock was as good as any a year ago and with a couple of bounces they could have been the ones left standing at the end..  They enter this Summer hoping to make good on what they started a year ago.. It may take a few weeks to infuse the new additions from Abramson’s crew into the fold but there’s a lot of time for that.. They squandered a lead to Team Kornblatt in Floor Hockey but are clearly among the best groups in the League and one Floor Hockey loss isn’t going to move them out of the Rankings. Not after their season in 2015. They look to rebound and jump up a few spots next week against Team Apuli in Flag Football.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – All tied for 10th with 0 points.

Team Bohrer (Danley’s Garage)

Captain Jason is returning after a couple of Summers away from All Sports Series and he has brought with him a host of Rookies looking to make a splash.. They played against Team Liss in their best sport of Hoops and it was just a rough Week 1 assignment. We have it on good authority that Team Bohrer will be excel in non-Hoops sports so there’s plenty of time for them to start moving in to and up the Power Rankings. They turn to Floor Hockey against #2 Team Hakimian next week!

Team Palmer (Chicago Trolley)

Team Palmer is back for their 2nd ride as a unit in the Chicago Men’s League.  They were very solid a year ago and you should not let their Week 1 result be an indication of what to expect from this Summer.. The fact is, they drew the unlucky task of getting Team Watts on their first night in the Chicago Men’s League and that group wanted to put on a show. Frankly, it didn’t matter who their opponent was.. They will have softball in Week 2 against Team Rubin who is also searching for Win #1.

Team Rubin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

Shouldn’t get too high after Ws and can’t get too low after Losses.. Especially in All Sports Series when the match-ups dictate so much and even more so in Week 1.  Team Rubin had what might have been the toughest Week 1 assignment of any in the League.. Hoops against Team Hakimian.  Few have come out of that matchup with much success… Team Rubin is mostly comprised of Rookies but is led by Captain Alex who in 2013 just about single-handedly shouldered a Team into the Final4 of this very League (while playing for the now defunct Team Radist).  He and All Sports Series vet Alex Filin are extremely capable.. Extremely..  This is a group that is going to rise over the next month and that you can take to the bank. More confident in that, than any one thing in this entire Week 1 Power Rankings.

Team SpringCM (Sunset Foods)

They are the only Team of complete All Sports Series Rookies.  It’s going to take them some time to get their feet wet and adapt to everything.. The beauty is they have a ton of time and there’s talent on this roster. They are very deep and in many sports that is going to go a long way for them.  For instance, next week in Floor Hockey.. This group should have enough to have several actual lines changing in and out every couple minutes and in third period they will certainly be the fresher squad!  They’ll bounce back in no time.

Team Valvassori (StudentCity)

Last, but only buy alphabetical order, is Team Valvassori. This is a group chalk full of talent and All Sports Series vets. They have been playing in the College/Prep League for a handful of years (and Champaign/Madison) for many of them and have finally graduated to the Chicago Men’s League.  This is a group that will continue to fight until the final second ticks away.. Alec Greenberg had 17 on night 1. They have a lot of talent as well and it’s going to frustrate some Teams when the youngsters start knocking some Teams down.. This group will be in the Rankings before you know it.

That’s it for Week 1, see you back on Monday Night! Have a great weekend!
