2016 Chicago Men’s – Week 2 (June 13)

By
Updated: June 19, 2016

2/3 of the Men’s League moved outdoors for the first time on Monday Night to get 16″ Softball and Flag Football started.. The rest of the Teams battled in Floor Hockey.. When the dust settled, just one Team stood alone atop the Standings, and that is Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa).  Will they come in at #1 in the Power Rankings?  Scroll down to find out..  Here’s a link to the Weekly Highlight Video!

One more thing before we get to the Power Rankings, our MVP Sponsor for the Chicago Summer Leagues is none other than Live Clean Chicago! They are the best Cleaning Service in Chicago bar none and more importantly you can trust them to clean your place (even if you aren’t home). OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Zimmerman (STATE) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

The Defending Champs picked up their first W of the Season after a brief tumble in Floor Hockey last week.  It’s enough to keep them atop the Power Rankings for the second straight week.  Off-season acquisition and All Sports Series vet Brian Harris paid immediate dividends for the Champs as he tossed 4 TDs in their W over Rivals Team Cohen. Brian joining brother Adam proved 2 Harris are better than 1…  The Champs have struggled Offensively in years past and last night was a complete 180. It helps when you have targets such as Colin Rice who hauled in 3 TDs of his own.  Speaking of targets, it is extremely fitting the Defending Champs are rocking Red this Summer, as they have a giant bullseye on them (thank you Jack).

2. Team Hakimian (Hakimian Imports) – Currently tied for 3rd with 33 points.

Settling in at the Top 2 for what could be the considerable future is Team Hakimian who followed up their Week 1 Hoops W with a sound Floor Hockey Win in Week 2 over Team Bohrer. Michael Morrissey had a couple Goals and recent acquisition Graham Conatser had 4 Goals as well. They are really looking good and seemed focused in on grabbing that 3rd “All Sports” Crown which would of course actually be their 5th total Championship when factoring in the Back2Back Hoops titles.. They are scary good when they get rolling and that’s exactly what they are doing..

3. Team Kornblatt (Camp Ojibwa) – Currently in 1st with 40 points.

Alone in first place of the Standings and rounding out the Top 3 of the Power Rankings isn’t a bad start to the 2016 for Team Kornblatt. Captain Matthew and co. earned a season-making W in 2OT Flag Football on Monday Night, just edging out Rivals Team Fallows in OT.  These groups know each other so well and the Defense was seemingly ahead of the Offense all night long.. In 2OT, QB1 Jeff Jay Nault would find Phil Weisberg for a TD and cap it off with the PAT to sure-handed Derek Reinglass for the W.  Now, that Floor Hockey and Football are behind them until the Playoffs can they keep the momentum going? Team Cohen is up next in Hoops.

4. Team Sternberg (Biaggi’s) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

Back in the Top 5 where we are used to seeing them.. They got their first W of the Season in OT Floor Hockey on Monday Nights against Team Watts.. Captain Sam played incredibly in net and they willed one out in what they wouldn’t consider their best sport.. Josh Katlin was a beast for them on the Offensive side of the rink (court) and had 4 Goals. All they needed was a bit of momentum to get them going and now they can really take off. Team Bohrer in Softball is next.

5. Team Liss (Sandusky Cabinets) – Currently in 2nd with 38 points.

2-0 start for this squad led by Jason Teitelbaum and Jordan Liss.  Not sure many had these guys pegged as a Top 5 crew exiting Week 2 since it’s their first spin in the Chicago Men’s League but they haven’t waited to make an impression.  They got a Softball W over Team Hagari on Monday Night and really displayed some nice D in the field in doing so.. Captain Jason had a couple RBI and Jack Manilow went 4 for 4 at the dish. Floor Hockey awaits them in Week 3 when they take on Team McNichols.

6. Team Kaplan (Wrigley View Rooftop) – Currently tied for 3rd with 33 points.

There are many young Teams near the top of the Power Rankings exiting Week 2.. And just 4 of 18 Teams leave Week 2 Undefeated.. Team Kaplan is one of those.. They got a sound Floor Hockey W on Monday Night to follow up on their Week 1 Hoops W.  Dylan Levin had 4 Goals on Monday Night. This is a group that might fly under the radar for a few weeks but its not wise to underestimate them.. They will take on Team Watts in Softball during Week 3.

7. Team Valvassori (StudentCity) – Currently tied for 5th with 25 points.

Picking up their first W in the Chicago Men’s League is Team Valvassori. They are no stranger to All Sports Series Ws however, as they have reigned near or at the top of the Suburbs College/Prep League for a handful of years.. These guys led by Dillon Rudy and Chris Valvassori are going to grind out Ws all season long. Jordan Schumacher had a great night at the plate going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI.  The expectation is that they will actually move up from this #7 Ranking in time. They have Floor Hockey in Week 3 with Team Rubin who is searching for their first W.

8. Team Fallows (Al’s Beef on WESTERN) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

Hard to push this Team down at all let alone a handful of spots, since their only L was this past Monday Night in 2OT.  Their Defense played extremely well managing to force several turnovers.. They know they can Win in Flag Football and they are going to bounce back from this.. They are better suited to do so than most Teams in the League. They know full well the rigors of an All Sports Series campaign.. Team Shlofrock is next on the Schedule and happens to be Ranked at #9…

9. Team Shlofrock (ShopHouse) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

Another group getting a bounce back Win in Week 2 was Team Shlofrock.  C0-Captain Dan found the endzone 3x on Monday Night and Seth Frankenthal scored 2x as well.  They looked fantastic on Offense and it’s safe to say you won’t want to see them in the Championship Flag Football Game come August.  They have Hoops next Week against #8 Team Fallows in what could be the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week!

10. Team Palmer (Chicago Trolley) – Currently tied for 5th with 25 points.

Team Palmer’s first W of the Season came on the Softball diamond this past Monday Night when they defeated Team Rubin. The W vaults them into the Top 10 in the Rankings and all the way up to a tie for 5th in the Standings as we head to Week 3.  They play Floor Hockey against Rookies Team Hagari next Monday Night.. Experience usually plays a factor in Floor Hockey.. If they can take care of business next week they will be in a commanding position for a top Playoff spot as we exit the opening stretch..

11. Team Watts (SLA Insurance) – Currently tied for 12th with 13 points.

Captain Mack’s squad looked amazing in Hoops in Week 1. We’ve come to expect that from them in their days in the College/Prep League.. They got their first taste of Floor Hockey action on Monday Night and you could tell it was their first Game in the beginning.. Team Sternberg was able to mount a fairly large lead from the get go.. However, Team Watts figured it out in the 3rd period and stormed back to force OT! They’d end up falling in Overtime but in general you can expect these guys to be good in just about everything this Summer. They’ll be back in the Top 10 in no time.

12. Team Apuli (Chipotle) – Currently tied for 7th with 20 points.

Team Apuli ran into the buzzsaw that was Team Shlofrock’s Flag Football crew on Monday Night.. Alex Dorn was able to get a couple TDs for Team Apuli but they could just not manage to get stops on D.  Looking ahead, they have a Hoops contest with Defending Champs Team Zimmerman in Week 3. Both groups are very familiar with one another and Team Apuli certainly has enough to knock Team Zimmerman off the #1 spot..

t-13. Teams Hagari (Pork & Mindy’s) & McNichols (Fontanini Foods) – Currently tied for 12th with 13 points.

We have a tie for the final spot in the Rankings this week.. Both Team Hagari and Team McNichols have virtually identical resumes at this point so they both have a claim to the final spot… These two Teams both won their Debut All Sports Series Games back in Week 1 Hoops and both were in impressive fashion.. They each followed that up with a Loss in 16″ Softball this past Monday Night.. It’ll be interesting to see which (or both) of these Teams can shake off Week 2 and come back ready to go in Week 3.. Floor Hockey awaits both Teams next Monday Night.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order) – Currently tied for 14th with 0 points.

Team Bohrer (Danley’s Garage)

No one has had a harder schedule to open the Season than Team Bohrer..  They faced the now 2-0 Team Liss in what will likely be their best sport, Hoops, in Week 1.. Then they had the pleasure of coming across the Dynasty aka Team Hakimian in Floor Hockey in Week 2.. Both Bret Greenberg and Joe Kim both lit the lamp on Monday Night. Looking ahead it should get easier, but likely not this coming Monday Night when they face the tough Team Sternberg in Softball.

Team Cohen (Crystal Lake CDJ)

They dropped Week 2 Flag Football to Defending Champs Team Zimmerman. No shame in that.. These guys are true Vets and won’t let an 0-2 start frazzle them.. They are well aware that things can change quickly in All Sports Series so you have to look ahead.. They will have Team Kornblatt in Week 3 Hoops.. Hoops has notably been Team Kornblatt’s achilles heel for years and it could be the perfect opportunity for Team Cohen to not just get a W but gain back some ground on the current #1 Team in the Standings.

Team Rubin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

This is a group that still has a ton of promise despite their slow start.. Mike Comer and Ben Gilford both had great nights at the plate in Week 2 but they couldn’t get enough outs when in the Field.. They have Floor Hockey in Week 3 which is worth a big 20 points.. So a Win on Monday Night could theoretically take them from the cellar of the Standings all the way up to the top half of leaderboard…  They just need to shake off the first couple of weeks, chalk it up getting to know one another and get ready to make a run.. They are extremely capable of doing so..

Team SpringCM (Sunset Foods)

It’s not rare for groups to drop their first couple of All Sports Series Games.. The competition level is usually higher than many would expect out of the gate and it takes a few weeks to really get your feet wet and acclimate to the League. This group is not short on talent and it’s only a matter of time until they breakthrough for that first W.. Daniel Malnar and Jerry Choinski both scored for this group in Hockey on Monday Night. They have Softball against Team Hakimian in Week 3.

That’s it for the Week 2 Power Rankings. See everyone Monday Night!
