Updated: October 2, 2016

On Sunday afternoon we CROWNED our first ever Chicago 16″ Champs — Congrats to 4. Team Holzman!!  On the first Sunday of the Playoffs everything was very chalky.. We saw top seeds advance in nearly every Game… On the final Sunday, we had the exact opposite.. The lower seeded Team won each and every Game in the Final4 and Championship.. We’ll break all of that down below!

Here’s the Link to the Weekly Highlight Video!

One more thing before we get to the Power Rankings, our MVP Sponsor for the Chicago Summer Leagues is none other than Live Clean Chicago! They are the best Cleaning Service in Chicago bar none and more importantly you can trust them to clean your place (even if you aren’t home). Playoff Review

Final4

1. Team Zimmerman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Purple) v. 4. Team Holzman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Lime)

Team Zimmerman entered the final Sunday as the clear cut favorite to take the Crown. They were the Undefeated #1 Seed, fresh off their Back2Back Chicago Men’s League Championships this Summer (a feat no Team has done before them).. Team Holzman on the other hand, at other plans.. They were slept on for much of the League from a Championship perspective.. They lost a Game early and while other groups raced out to undefeated records, they floated under the radar somewhat..

From the jump Team Holzman got out to an early lead.. They were really able to get a lot of base runners and forced Team Zimmerman into a few uncharacteristic mistakes. We were used to seeing great Defense behind Ross Neuman all season long, but on this day they were just a tad off.. Team Holzman got an early lead and kept it.. Zach Fine was a big 3 for 3 and had a couple RBIs to help seal it.. 4. Team Holzman would advance to the Championship!

For Team Zimmerman, it will be a disappointing end to their first run in the 16″ League.. But these guys are on an unparalleled stretch right now and one Loss in the Final4 doesn’t change that. They will be back next Summer and going for a 3peat in the Chicago Men’s League. In the meantime, some will lace up in the Chicago Hoops League (and then Chicago Floor Hockey League in the Spring).. Thanks as always for playing and congrats goes out to Nick Woeckel on getting married last weekend!

2. Team Max (Theory) v. 3. Team Massel (StudentCity)

So the stage was set.. When these two Teams took the field, they knew that 4. Team Holzman (and not Undefeated #1 Team Zimmerman) would be waiting for them.. It was just a few short weeks ago that Team Max handed Team Massel their first L of the Season (in a route) and was able to catapult them in the Standings as a result.. Their paths were destined to meet again and Team Massel was determined to not let history repeat itself..

This one was a high-scoring affair. For Team Max, Austin Natkin and Jared Cohen had nice days at the plate.. For Team Massel, they were matched and then some by Zach Lessem who had a Home Run and drove in 3 on the day. Alex Brown and Brett Weiss were also great at the dish. When the dust settled it was 3. Team Massel who would advance to the Championship by a score of 11-8.. They would move on and face 4. Team Holzman.

For Team Max, it was a great run.  They are harsh critics on themselves and would say they didn’t play their best.. They have to look at the season as a success though.. Getting to the #2 seed and nearly getting to the Championship is something to be proud of in such a talented League. These guys are All Sports Series vets and we will see them again soon. Thanks for playing!

Championship

3. Team Massel (StudentCity) v. 4. Team Holzman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Lime)

After the Final4, we were left with these two squads.. Maybe not who Vegas who would have predicted but an exciting pairing nonetheless. These two Teams battled to a 15-10 Team Massel W all the way back in July.. So naturally we were expecting a slugfest to decide the Crown.. However, in a day of surprises, we’d get another one.. It was the Defenses who were flashing the leather (you get the point) all Game long!  Each half-inning presented a chance for either Team to break through but neither Team could pull away..

Phil Silverman was key for Team Holzman as he both scored a run and drove one in.. Seth Davis had the other RBI for his squad.. Alex Brown had another solid game for Team Massel and drove in one as well.. That would be all the scoring this Game had.. 4. Team Holzman Wins the Championship 2-1!   It was a true nail-biter from start to finish, more on the Champs below!

For Team Massel, the Runners-Up, they had a GREAT season.. They were able to avenge their only Regular Season Loss in the Final4 by getting past Team Max.  Getting to a Championship in All Sports Series is tremendously difficult and to do so with the tough road they had speaks to how good they were.. This group will be back and among the favorites to win the whole thing a year from now. Until then, Captain Landon and co. are focused on grabbing a Flag Football Crown. Thanks for playing!

To the Champs! Team Holzman.. Captain Andrew has been running Teams in All Sports Series since way back in 2012.  He is a mainstay and it is great to see him finally get a Crown!  He is also joined by several Veterans who finally got their first Championship.. Danny Goldin and Alex Parmacek among them.  Anthony Maione adds to his vast All Sports Series trophy case as he is nearing the career lead in Crowns for a single player.. The rest of this group was truly excellent not just on the final day but all season long.. Their Defense really got them here.. They gave up a total of two runs on the final day of the League. That included facing 1. Team Zimmerman and 3. Team Massel. They needed to get through three Top-5 Teams in the Playoffs when adding 5. Team Karmin to the mix.. No doubt a special group and one that will be pumped to repeat a year from now! The bullseye is now firmly planted on their backs! Congrats and thanks for playing!

That’s it for the first Season of the Chicago 16″ League! Thanks to everyone for playing!
