By
Updated: August 30, 2016

We got this Sunday’s Games in by hook or crook, as the infield turned to the outfield grass for some support.. With those Games in the books we are left with just one week left of the Regular Season. First, we will be off this coming Sunday for Labor Day Weekend. Then we will return on Sept. 11 to close the Regular Season — those Games are the Week 2 make-ups.  As we turn to the final week, there are several scenarios that Teams are looking at in terms of their potential playoff seeds.. We are going to turn this week’s Power Rankings into a Playoff Scenarios article.. We’ll go down the Standings and present where each Team may fall come the first Sunday of the Playoffs.

Here’s the Link to the Weekly Highlight Video!

Playoff Scenarios

1. Team Zimmerman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 6-0

Math is simple here.. Win and they are the #1 overall seed.  That would also complete the perfect 7-0 regular season.. Now, should they have a hiccup in their Regular Season finale, they open themselves up to fall down the leaderboard a bit.. There are two 5-1 Teams.. Max and Massel.. Team Zimmerman defeated Team Max head to head.. They haven’t played Team Massel. So, if Zimmerman loses and Teams Max and/or Massel Win.. We’d have a tie at 6-1 to finish the season..  If both Max/Massel Win in that scenario, Team Zimmerman would still get the #1 seed due to tiebreakers.. The only way they could finish below #1 is if Team Massel Wins and both Teams Zimmerman and Max lose.. Unlikely.

t-2. Team Max (Theory) & Team Massel (StudentCity) – 5-1

Both Teams Max and Massel have had fantastic Regular Seasons.  Team Massel still has a chance at claiming the top seed as well by the conclusion of the Season.. That will require some craziness though.. Team Zimmerman is at 6-0 and playing 1-5 Team McLaughlin to finish the season.. Odds are Team Zimmerman gets to 7-0.  So let’s assume that happens.. Then what?  Team Max defeated Team Massel head to head which means they are in the driver’s seat for the #2 seed. Team Max winning means they’d be at #2.  Team Massel needs a Loss from Team Max + a Win of their own to leapfrog them..

While #2-3 is the likely high point for each, they both sit just a Game above Team Holzman at 4-2 as we enter the final Sunday. Team Massel defeated them in Week 3, so they are safe from being jumped.. Team Max on the other hand didn’t play Team Holzman and based on some tiebreakers could fall below Team Holzman..

So, potential landing spots are.. Team Max #1-4 and Team Massel #1-3 (again, the top spot is likely going to Team Zimmerman).

4. Team Holzman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Lime) – 4-2

A Game vs. Team Emer will close out the season.. They find themselves all alone in 4th and they have certainly clinched a Top-6 seed. That’s significant as the Top-6 automatically qualify for the Elite8 while the other 4 Teams battle it out in an extra Opening Round of the Playoffs.  If they win, they finish #4.  That is due to tiebreakers.. The two Teams in front of them by a Game in the Standings are Teams Max and Massel. Team Massel defeated them already and they didn’t play Team Max. Team Max also defeated Team Massel.. So if all three Teams end up tied at 5-2.. Team Holzman would finish on the bottom of that 3-way tiebreaker by going 0-1 in head to head Games with the other two..

Now, if they lose their Regular Season finale.. There are two other Teams waiting at just a Game back with hopes of jumping them.. Teams Karmin and Golembo sit at 3-3 right now.. They actually will play each other in a huge match-up to finish the season.. Team Holzman defeated Team Karmin during the Regular Season and they would hold a head to head tiebreaker over them if each finished at 4-3.. So Team Holzman is rooting for Team Karmin to Win.. Team Holzman did not play Team Golembo.. Therefore, we’d need to go to a Strength of Schedule tiebreaker for that one..

It is a very likely scenario that Team Holzman opens up the Playoffs in the Elite8 against next week’s Golembo/Karmin Winner.

t- 5. Team Golembo (BBQ Pit) & Team Karmin (SLA Insurance) – 3-3

Let’s just get the most important piece out of the way now.. These Teams are tied right now but will play in the final Week of the Regular Season.. So the tie will certainly be broken then…

At 3-3, they both sit a Game Back of Team Holzman at 4-2.  The Winner here locks in a Top-6 seed and an Elite8 berth.. With a likely matchup with Team Holzman to start the Playoffs (as mentioned above). If Team Holzman Loses, that makes this Game even more interesting..  Team Karmin would Lose a head to head tiebreaker with Team Holzman.. Team Golembo and Team Holzman didn’t play and would need to go to a Strength of Schedule tiebreaker..

If Team Holzman Wins, then these two Teams are playing for the right to be the #5 seed and enter the Playoffs with an over .500 record.. The Loser, could also be caught by Team Sternberg who sits at 2-4 right now.  Team Golembo lost to Team Sternberg and, thus, would lose a tiebreaker to them should both Teams finish at 3-4.. Team Golembo would then fall to the #7 seed and have to play an extra Playoff Game.. Team Sternberg and Team Karmin didn’t play, so if both Teams finished at 3-4, we’d need a Strength of Schedule tiebreaker to see who finishes #6 and who finishes #7.

Huge implications for many Teams in the Golembo/Karmin finale.  Get Ready.

7. Team Sternberg (Camp Ojibwa) – 2-4

They sit on the edge of the Opening Round right now.. They got a big time W over Team McLaughlin last week which assures them that they will at least finish in the Top 8 (more on that in a second).. However, right now the race really focuses on the #6 spot.. Top 6 go straight to the Elite8 while Teams seeded 7-10 play in an extra Opening Round Playoff game..

So, if Team Sternberg Wins.. They will get to 3-4.  Right now, that wouldn’t guarantee them climbing out of the #7 spot.. However, Teams Golembo and Karmin (who are tied at 3-3, one game up on Sternberg) play each other this coming Sunday.. Which means if Team Sternberg Wins, they will at least tie one of those squads for 6th.. Team Sternberg holds the tiebreaker over Team Golembo via a head to head W.  They didn’t play Team Karmin, so we’d have to go to a Strength of Schedule tiebreaker for that.. They will be rooting for Team Karmin to Win..

They do a have a tough test with Rivals Team Max to close the Season.. If they fall, they may be caught by Teams Emer and McLaughlin who sit a Game back.. As stated above, they hold a tiebreaker over McLauhglin, however they Lost to Team Emer a couple weeks back.. That means Team Emer would leap them should they end at 2-5… Big potential swing for Team Sternberg here..

t-9. Team Emer (Live Clean Chicago) & Team McLaughlin (Worth Sports) – 1-5

These two Teams did not play in the Regular Season. Both Teams know that they will compete in the Opening Round when the Playoffs begin. However, coming in with a) momentum and b) a better road is key..  Team Emer can leap Team Sternberg with a Win in their final Game and a Team Sternberg Loss.. Team McLaughlin will be hoping for an Emer Loss + a Win of their own to get a leg up..

The likeliest of scenarios are that these two Teams will actually meet each other in the Opening Round of the Playoffs.. One as the #8 seed and the other as the #9 seed.. Unless, Team Less pulls a stunner on Team Massel and pulls even.. A bunch of tiebreaker scenarios could ensue then..

Much scoreboard watching awaits these guys on the final day of the Season.

10. Team Less (Alternative) – 0-6

For Team Less, they want to just grab a W before the Playoffs for momentum.. If not a W, then at least to play a really solid Game and get to a point where they know they can Win.  They will take on the tough Team Massel to close the Season. A Loss means they finish in 10th and play whoever lands in the #7 spot in the Opening Round of the Playoffs.. Most likely that will be Team Sternberg.. However, if they do get a W, they could potentially leap over Team Emer (should Emer Lose) based on a Strength of Schedule tiebreaker as those Teams did not play this season.. McLaughlin cannot be jumped due to a head to head Loss by Less early in the Summer.

That’s it for the scenarios. Have a great Labor Day Weekend and see you on the 11th to close out the Regular Season!
