2016 Chicago Summer 16″ Softball – Week 3 (July 24)

By
Updated: July 30, 2016

Got a Win back over Mother Nature this past Sunday and got our second set of Games in.  Week 2’s slate of Games will be made-up at the end of the Regular Season.. As the dust settled in Week 3, two Teams made it to 2-0.. Team Zimmerman and Team Massel remain unbeaten. Team Max is also undefeated at 1-0 (with a Double Header looming later in the season). Lots of Offense all over the place on Sunday as the conditions made it easier for the Offense to rake.

SCHEDULE NOTE — NO GAMES  ON JULY 31 – LOLLAPALOOZA!

OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Zimmerman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Purple) – 2-0

Through two Games, Team Zimmerman has established themselves as one of the Teams to beat.. No surprise there considering their All Sports Series history.. What has really separated from the pack is their Defense.  They have easily given up the fewest amount of runs through two Games.. They’ve allowed 6 total runs through two Games.. The next closest Teams have allowed 16 runs.. That’s a gigantic difference and as everyone is well aware, Defense wins Championships.  Ross Neuman has been dealing on the mound and gives the guys behind him a nice advantage. Look for them to continue rolling after Lolla.

2. Team Massel (StudentCity) – 2-0

The other group to 2-0 is Team Massel.  They’ve gone about it in a much different way than #1 Team Zimmerman though.. They have won each of their two Games by a score of 15-10 and are determined to win Games with their bats.  They got what may end up being the most impressive Win of their season on Sunday as they defeated previously ranked #1 Team Holzman in a slugfest.  Captain Landon Massel and co. are a confident bunch and you can tell they never think they are out of a Game. That’s a very valuable skill to have.  They take on Team McLaughlin when we return in August.

3. Team Max (Theory) – 1-0

Team Max finally took the field for the first time this season.. Third time is the charm. They got to 1-0 behind a strong offensive showing. Frank Maione has been a softball beast in All Sports Series for years and showed his prowess once again at the dish on Sunday afternoon. This group is one to be reckoned with all season. They may trail some of the Teams in the Standings for a bit while they await their Double Header but they are certainly among the League’s best.

4. Team Holzman (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Lime) – 1-1

Falling a few spots after being #1 in the post-Week 1 Power Rankings is Team Holzman. They matched-up with Team Massel on Sunday afternoon in what was one of the better Games of the day. Both Teams are clearly among the League’s best and Sunday showed why.. Team Holzman got down early but made a run of it through the middle innings. They just made a few uncharacteristic mistakes in the field and that cost them. They are going to be just fine and expect them to bounce back quickly.

5. Team Sternberg (Camp Ojibwa) – 1-1

Earning their first W of the Season was Team Sternberg on Sunday afternoon after they defeated Team Golembo in the highest scoring Game of the Summer thus far.  They won 24-14 in a Game where Clinchers were flying over the outfielders head for what seemed like the Game’s entirety. These guys are better than what they are showing Defensively and will improve in time.. That’s scary since they just put up 24 runs on Sunday and are among the League’s best at the plate.  They can rest easy going into the Lolla break as they get back to .500.

6. Team Karmin (SLA Insurance) – 1-1

Team Karmin looked great in Week 1 and still looked good on Sunday but couldn’t pull out the W against Team Max.  They were without a few of their top guys and in All Sports Series, you need to bring your best each week to get Ws. This group is going to be just fine as they have a bunch of guys who can really hit the ball. Their line-up is a hard one to get through and when the rust really comes off for everyone in August they are going to be even better. Expect them to move up from #6 soon.

7. Team McLaughlin (Worth Sports) – 1-1

Final spot in the Rankings this week goes to Team McLaughlin after their first W of the Season on Sunday afternoon. They put a hurt on Team Less in a 25-1 throwdown. Their bats were on fire the entire day and it seemed like they just hit it where ever Team Less was not, in every at bat.  It was really something to see.  It only takes one Game to turn everything around and get some momentum.. They fell by a good margin to Team Holzman in Week 1 but regrouped and now look as promising as any!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Emer (Live Clean Chicago) – 0-1

Team Emer hit the diamond for the first time on Sunday afternoon.. They’ll have a double dip with Team Max later in the Season.. Many will know this crew as Team Kornblatt.. Who happen to be currently the only Undefeated Team in the Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League on Monday Nights as we head to the conclusion of the Regular Season finale.  This group for the most part played in the original All Sports Series back in 2010 and while their initial Game in the 16″ League was not their desired debut they are going to be just fine.  This group is capable of winning the whole thing.. Just need to knock some rust off.

Team Golembo (BBQ Pit) – 0-2

Team Golembo isn’t off to the start they had hoped for but they are having a great time out there. That is an important thing as we move through the Regular Season. They are care-free and it bodes well for them in what will be some high-pressure situations later on in the Summer.  These guys have a ton of talent and as they get acclimated to 16″ ball they are going to be major players.. You can expect them to look like a much different group a month from now.  Lucky for those that have already faced them..

Team Less (Alternative Apparel) – 0-2

Team Less has had a tough start to the season but realistically, it’s no big deal. They’ve dropped a couple of Games and truthfully will be just fine.  Simple things can really improve them and they will be just fine. A bit more patience at the plate and figuring out the best spots for each guy on Defense is all they need to really right the ship. No reason to hit the panic button.. at all!

That’s it for this week.
