2016 Chicago Summer Hoops – Week 2 (June 21)

Updated: June 23, 2016

Week 2 always tells us more about the League than Week 1. Tons of emotions flying high on Opening Night and many are getting rid of off-season rust.. Week 2, on the other hand, allows Teams to really settle in and show-off what they can do.  Four Teams survived Week 2 still undefeated: Team Darcy, Team Maione, Team Reich and Team Zahniser. Here’s a Link to the Weekly Video Highlights

We’re also adding Jack Zimmerman to the Power Rankings write-up crew.. Many are familiar with Jack from various All Sports Series Leagues and he will be manning one of the scoreboards during Games on Tuesday Nights. He provides unique insight from seeing every play for certain Games. Welcome Jack!

One more thing before we get to the Power Rankings, our MVP Sponsor for the Chicago Summer Leagues is none other than Live Clean Chicago! They are the best Cleaning Service in Chicago bar none and more importantly you can trust them to clean your place (even if you aren’t home). OK Let’s Rank ‘Em!

Power Rankings

1. Team Darcy (SLA Insurance Gold) – 2-0

It’s time this Team receives the credit they deserve – Defending Champs or not, they’ve made a case for holding the #1 spot in the Power Rankings.  Opposing Teams may not have given them the respect they deserved from winning the Summer League a year ago, and that included a brief war of words on twitter immediately following their Championship last summer.  Well, two weeks into the 2016 season, Team Darcy has defeated Team Lalez (who have won 4 total All Sports Crowns), and Team Cohen, which was laced with former NBA D-leaguers on Tuesday night.  Oh, and they did so in what may have been the most dramatic fashion on a night filled with close games.  In the closing seconds, Justin Bowen hit a three for Team Cohen to tie the game.  On the ensuing possession,  the Champs didn’t rush.. Forced a foul, got to the line. Hit the Free Throw. Game over.  Team Darcy moves to 2-0.

2. Team Maione (Alternative Apparel) – 2-0

No subs, no problem.  Team Maione beat a very good Team Dean Tuesday night with only five guys.  If you’ve been with All Sports Series before, you’re well aware of just how difficult it is to beat a team with only five guys, let alone a team as talented as Team Dean is.  Led by Andy Timson’s 27 and Chris Wroblewski’s 33 on Tuesday Night.  For a brief moment, Team Dean seemed to have control of the game.  However, if you know anything about Team Maione, they will not stop attacking, and they have the shooters to dig themselves out of a hole.  They are in the Live Clean Chicago Game of the Week next week with 2-0 Team Reich.

3. Team Lalez (cea Study Abroad) – 1-1

Similar to the theme of the recap above, winners win. No one has won more than this group over the years..  The Hakimian/Lalez organization rarely fails at finding a way to beat their opponent on the basketball court.  Unselfish, team basketball has been their recipe for success since the inaugural All Sports Series summer season back in 2010, and those team-before-me principles have remained as the foundation for their success.  This team will be highly ranked until someone proves they shouldn’t be. Dave Gerhsenzon had 21 in his Summer League debut and Captain Benny had 19 in the W.

4. Team Reich (Tamales) – 2-0

This team is big.  Actually, they’re huge.  Huge is more appropriate.  Team Reich has incredible size, length, and depth, which proved to be just enough to get them past Team Wong in OT on Tuesday night.  Team Reich relinquished a double-digit lead, played into overtime, and came away with a win after a full court pass found Calvin Turner for a running layup as time expired.  It was a great game between two heavyweight Teams that will make a lot of noise this Summer.  Tremell Adams lead the way for the second week in a row with 26 points, and Captain Reich and Marcus White held it down on the glass.  If you don’t know these guys – get to know them.

5. Team Zahniser (Badger Bowl) – 2-0

Captain Evan Zahniser has played on a lot of different All Sports Series squads with one common denominator – he never Captained any of them.  This season, as made obvious after Week w, will be very different for Captain Zahniser after taking matters into his own hands.  He didn’t just put together a competitive Team, he put together a good Team.  These guys play together as if it’s their fifth year in All Sports Series, not their first.  Calvin Kang and Eugene Connor led the way Week 2, with 22 and 19 points, respectively.  A lot of optimism about this team moving forward.

6. Team Dean (ALX Salon) – 1-1

Losing to Team Maione is never something to hang your head over.  However, on Tuesday night, Team Dean had their opponents exactly where they wanted them and, just like that, the lead they had built was gone, as is often the case against those guys.  Team Dean has a unique blend of talent ranging from quick guards, to knock-down shooters, and forceful bigs.  They have all the ingredients necessary to make a run in this league, and as they play with one another more, we’ll see them improve on a weekly basis.  Courtney Griffin had 36 in the loss and was unstoppable down low. He’s certainly one to watch. Team Nemetz up next for them in Week 3.

7. Team Wong (SLA Insurance Green) – 1-1

Lane Barlow.  Again.  And again.  And again.  That’s how Team Wong was able to take Team Reich down to the wire Tuesday night.  Barlow had 29 points in one of the more memorable Regular Season performances we’ve had in any league in 2016.  Scoring from anywhere on the court, and often through double and triple teams, Barlow willed his team back from a 14-point deficit and into an overtime battle.  Although they came up short, they move up in the Power Rankings for displaying, along with a ton of talent, grit and resilience against one of the strongest squads in the league.  Team Wong will rebound from this one just fine.

8. Team Cohen (Biaggi’s) – 1-1

This is a team with a lot of weapons.  Captain Andy put together a squad with shooters, bigs, and guys who are a combination of the two.  They played #1 ranked Team Darcy in what many have said was the Game of the Night.  The scoreboard may as well have been a pendulum, as the lead went back and forth throughout.  After Justin Bowen hit the game-tying three, which gave him 24 points on the evening, they couldn’t make it stand and force OT.  Losing to the Defending Champions in this fashion should be encouraging for this group.  If you collect moral victories, this would certainly be one. Team Prizant is next for them.

9. Team Hoops4Health (iHotel) – 1-1

Birthday Boy and Captain Brett Winer had 18 to help guide his Team to their first W of the Season.  They met a very tough Team Dean in Week 1 and went the distance with them.. Following that up in Week 2 with a W over Team Prizant shows that this group is going to take care of business when they should and be able to push the League’s best to the brink as well. They’ll have Team Sider next Tuesday Night in what should be a hard-fought affair.

10. Team Nemetz (Wedge) – 1-1

Captain Ari Nemetz spent a lot of time around All Sports Series over the past ten months and learned a few things, such as what it takes to grind out wins.  Consider the fact that he has Captains from other All Sports Series Leagues on his team, and you realize that this group will win some Games this Summer.  Speaking of captains – Jordan Liss, who captains a team of his own on Monday’s in the Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League, dropped 32 to lead the way for Team Nemetz.  Running mate EJ Silver contributed with 22 of his own to cement themselves as a dangerous outside duo.  Team Nemetz is trending upward.

11. Team Sider (VIP Limo) – 1-1

They got a very strong bounce back performance in Week 2 and it shows what having your entire Team will do for you.. They were missing key pieces Jason Vismantas and Austin Brown during Week 1 and they really suffered as a result.. This week, the whole Team was in the building and they returned to form.. They fought for a 10pt W against Team Playner in what was their style of Game.. Low scoring, intense basketball..  Both of the previously mentioned guys had 14 in their debut and Captain Jon kicked in a dozen of his own in the W.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Clark (Bell’s Greek Pizza) – 0-2

Not the start they envisioned but this Team is much better than their record indicates and eventually that will shine through.. They fell to the tough Team Zahniser in Week 2 and looking at the Schedules for the whole League, this group has had one of the hardest roads to open the year.. Matt Merrigan once again was great scoring 21 on Tuesday Night. They look to bounce back in Week 3 against another Team searching for their first W.. Team Playner.

Team Halperin (Starr Limo) – 0-2

Team Halperin is certainly among the best 11 Teams (i.e. being Ranked). It’s without a doubt.  Soon their record will prove it as well.. The addition of 2015-16 Chicago Hoops League MVP Kyle Nelson instantly vaults them into a Championship contender. They held the lead against the one of the League’s best – Team Lalez – down the stretch but just couldn’t hold on.. They will grow more as a unit in the next month and are likely going to be a powerhouse come Playoff time. Book it.

Team Playner (Kelly Parker HC) – 0-2

Team Playner played well enough to Win on Tuesday Night but had some bad luck along the way and it cost them.  These guys are on the cusp of a breakout.. You can feel it.  They are much closer to the Team we saw in Week 2 when they played great as opposed.. Leo Shubert had 19 and Captain Axel had 15 on the night as well.. They look to get their first W of the Season against Team Clark who also sits at 0-2.

Team Prizant (Farm Lake Barn) – 1-1

They were a bit short-handed on Tuesday Night and it’s tough to get Ws in this League (or any All Sports Series League for that matter) when don’t have your whole crew.. Just too much talent league-wide to be playing short-handed.  Jeff Shukis filled in admirably for them with 27 points on the night. He’s a guy they should try to hold on to for the remainder of the season. They look to bounce back in Week 3 against the always tough Team Cohen.

Team Purimetla (Sushi Kushi Too) – 0-2

Played well enough to Win in their high-scoring affair with Team Nemetz on Tuesday Night but just ran out of time.. This Game was played in the 90s for both Teams and it seems Team Purimetla likes to get out and go.. There’s a lot of talent though in the League and they’ll have to balance their desire to create quickly with the need to get a breather before having to defend against extremely capable opposition. Captain Pete had 29 on Tuesday Night to lead the way. Lucas Kisielewski had 21 as well. They get the Dynasty, Team Lalez in Week 3!

That’s it for this Week. See everyone next Tuesday Night for Week 3.
