2017-18 THE Chicago Hoops Week 13 – (Jan. 28)

Updated: February 2, 2018

Attention: Team McNichols haven’t lost a game yet.

Week 13 brought us some exciting matchups and they certainly did not fail to deliver. Team McNichols stays undefeated while a suddenly slipping Team Hanessian have given up the #2 to a very familiar foe. Four teams, three in the East, have now won almost 80 percent of their games. They’ve taken different paths to get here and the conference battles coming up in a few weeks are going to be crucial. Nonetheless, they all have their eyes on that coveted crown. We also have some movement in the back half of the Rankings this week as Team Maione has ripped off a couple of victories in a row and find themselves back in our Rankings in Week 13. Also, worth mentioning that in Week 13, Team Lalez’s Scott Campbell went off for FORTY-NINE points to help secure a very important Win for his squad. More big match-ups and performances coming up in Week 14!

Scheduling Note — We are OFF for the Super Bowl on Sunday and will return on Feb. 11!

Power Rankings

1. Team McNichols (Chipotle) – South – 13-0

Not only do they look like the biggest threat to dethrone the defending champion Team Lalez, but Team McNichols dominance has them looking like a team on a mission. They pick up their 13th straight victory on the 2017-18 season by beating a 1-loss Team Hanessian squad 87-83 in what was our Week 13 Game of the Week. They are showing absolutely zero signs of slowing down. Mike Kennedy and Joe Kozak continue to do the heavy lifting for these guys as they combined to drop 39 points on a very strong Team Hanessian D. After the Super Bowl, they will come back to FFC to take on the defending champs and #5 Team Lalez who are coming off a very big win of their own. Should be a great Game in Week 14.

2. Team Harlander (SLA Insurance) – South – 11-2

Sitting patiently in the #3 spot since Week 8, Team Harlander has finally moved up to the #2 hole this week as they cruised past Team Malvin by a final score of 86-61. The win also makes it a very impressive 10-straight for Team Harlander. It was an all-around team effort on Sunday evening as they had five different players in double figures. Adam Gwardys was the team’s leading scorer with 17 while Connor Grotton’s 16 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists helped bury a 4-9 Team Malvin squad. Team Harlander now has their sights set on that coveted #1 spot but their next test will be to get past a very tough #6 Team Schwartz crew in Week 14 when we get back from Super Bowl break.

3. Team Hanessian (CEA Study Abroad) – East – 11-2

Back to back tough losses have now moved Team Hanessian down into the #3 spot in our Week 13 Power Rankings. With a score of 87-83, Team Hanessian dropped their second in a row after starting the season with 11 straight victories. Their two losses to the #1 and #2 teams over the last two weeks have been by a combined 9 points. Sterling Williams had another monster game to lead the team’s offense with 38 points 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Reuben Wabomnor went for 17 points. Team Max, losers of three straight, are next on the calendar for Team Hanessian. This will be a good opportunity for them to regroup and get back to their winning formula.

4. Team Hampton (Crystal Lake CDJ) – South – 10-3

With a score of 91-70, Team Hampton got a huge victory over Team Schwartz to bring their record now to 10-3. The win also helps Team Hampton keep pace with #1 Team McNichols and #2 Team Hanessian as they are currently sitting in 3rd place in the South (crazy). Bryant Orange had another strong night to help earn the club the W with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Captain Randall Hampton did what he has done all year, pouring in 18 points while dishing out 9 dimes, a team and game high. Team Malvin, who are currently on a two-game losing streak, are next on the schedule for Team Hampton in Week 14. Anything but a win against Team Malvin would certainly crush their hopes of the division crown.

5. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – East – 9-4

After having to take a forfeit loss in Week 12, Team Lalez bounced back very nicely in Week 13. They were able to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat and beat Team Max in a heart throbbing back and forth game, 93-91. The win also moves Team Lalez up one notch and into the #5 spot in our Week 13 Power Rankings. We mentioned it at the top, but it is worth repeating…Scott Campbell poured in 49 points in Week 13! He took the burden on his shoulders and made sure that his team wouldn’t drop a second straight Game. Brandon Lathon was also very close to a Triple Double in this one with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. Team Lalez will need to continue to get these types of performances from these guys if they plan on moving up in the standings over the final five regular season games. It won’t be easy in Week 14 as Team Lalez squares off against undefeated and #1 Team McNichols.

6. Team Schwartz (StudentCity) – East – 8-5

Team Schwartz had a disappointing performance in Week 13, losing to #4 Team Hampton by a final score of 91-70. They received a forfeit win in Week 12 and were eager to get back on the court to notch another W in the win column. Unfortunately, they were unable to leave FFC on Sunday night with a victory, as Team Hampton played an excellent overall game. Jermaine Johnson, Austin Brown and Jon Sider combined to score 52 of their teams 70 points. They’ll need some support from other guys in Week 14 if they plan on keeping this game close, as they tip off against #2 Team Harlander who will be coming into this match-up riding a 10-game winning streak.

7. Team Massie (Theory) – West – 7-6

By the winning score of 79-70 over Team Jones, Team Massie secured their third straight victory and moved into the #7 spot in the Week 13 Power Rankings. The league’s leading scorer, Dylan Kremer, did it again on Sunday night dropping a huge 28-point performance on Team Jones. Tim Brennen also had a very nice overall performance as he was able to put in 17 points and grab 8 boards. They have won three in a row and all against quality opponents. They also gained a game on their division leaders on Sunday afternoon and now they are just three games back of the division lead. Suddenly, Team Massie is one of the hottest teams in the league and with plenty of time to keep climbing up the Standings. They have a chance when we return from the Super Bowl break to make a real impact on everything when they take on Team Dean in a crucial match-up for both squads.

8. Team Purimetla (Biaggi’s) – West – 6-7

Team Purimetla suffered their second straight tough loss as they went down to a Team Reisner squad, 90-86. Adam Jones and Josh Blackwell continued their hot hands dropping 23 points apiece. Kevin Matos also had a nice night putting in 22 points of his own. The loss pushes them below the .500 mark for the first time since week 9 and are now right smack dab in the middle of the standings. They look to shake off these two straight losses when they take on a Team Harris squad who is coming off a big win in Week 13. A loss in Week 14 for Team Purimetla could be devastating in terms of playoff seeding down the road, while a victory could put them in first place in the West division. Big game for Team Purimetla in Week 14 after the Super Bowl Break.

9. Team Max (Southview Athletics) – South – 5-8

Team Max fell by two points to the defending champs Team Lalez on Sunday Night. It makes the middle of the pack very interesting right now with three teams tied for 9th in the standings. They now have also dropped three straight games and are hanging onto the #9 spot by the skin of their teeth in this week’s Power Rankings. They are a very good team that seems to have hit a little wall in this long and grueling season. They just need to bring their best each week from here on out and forget about the last few weeks. They need to just hit the restart button and get back to the winning formula from earlier this season. Their best is among the league’s best. Paul Wirtz carried the load on Sunday night with 24 points while Captain Max also pitched in with 23. They just couldn’t get stops late. They have a big game coming up after the Super Bowl bye week with #3 Team Hanessian. This is a game that will have so much on the line for both teams.

10. Team Maione (The Bucket List) – West – 5-8

They’re baaaaack! Team Maione have now won two straight and move from the unranked all the way up into the #10 spot in the Week 13 Power Rankings. With a score of 76-70, Team Maione got a very important victory over Team Dean. The games that they were losing early in the season were for the most part close games. They now seem to be clicking and finding ways to come out on top. This is an extremely talented group and their depth is very underrated. When they have their full complement of players at their disposal they can play with any group in the league. They were missing their top two scorers in Week 13 and still came out on top. Dylan Richter led with 21, while Chris Ray and Bradley Deutsch both had 14. They get a 2-11 Team Jones right after the Super Bowl.

11. Team Reisner (Chicago Trolley) – North – 4-9

Team Reisner snaps their three-game losing streak, getting a very big and much needed victory, beating Team Purimetla 90-86. Team Reisner has had a straight-forward recipe for winning this season…get Marin Kukoc the ball. He leads Team Reisner in scoring and led his team once again in that department with 28 huge points against a very solid Team Purimetla. After the brief hiatus for the Super Bowl, Team Reisner will take on the 1-12 Team James squad and will look to build off this very solid victory.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Dean (Live Clean CHI) – North – 4-9

Team Dean ran into a very determined Team Maione squad on Sunday night and came out on the losing end of a 76-70 ball game. It happens. The key is that they are gaining chemistry and are going to be that team that nobody wants to face come Playoff time. The team’s leading scorer Courtney Griffin led with 19 and we saw captain Tredrick Dean continue his solid season. He had 14 points. They were without their second leading scorer, Brandon Williams, and it showed in this game as they just couldn’t come up with enough buckets down the stretch. A 7-6 Team Massie are next up on the schedule for Team Dean.

Team Harris (Schweitzer Title) – North – 3-10

Team Harris picked up their third victory on Sunday evening cruising past Team James 79-54. Captain Brian Harris had a very solid night on the floor, scoring 24 big points to pace this squad all night. Samuel Shiner had 18 and Max Unger contributed 16 to put this game away early. They are playing better basketball and seem to be rounding into form. Lucky for them, it’s at the perfect time. After the Super Bowl break, they will get a crack at against Team Purimetla who will be looking to avenge their tough Week 13 loss.

Team James (Stanley’s Kitchen) – West – 1-12

Team James suffered a lopsided defeat in Week 13 losing to Team Harris 79-54. They couldn’t get much going on offense as they were the lowest scoring team in Week 13. The team’s leading scorer Dave Altman, who averages right around 16 PPG, dropped 17 in this one to lead Team James once again on Sunday night. Corey Lewis also was able to chip in 14 points of his own but there wasn’t much support from anyone else. They will look to get their second win on the season and hope to snap that 11-game losing streak when they match up against a 5-8 Team Reisner squad after the Super Bowl bye week.

Team Jones (Rockin’ Refuel) – North – 2-11

Team Jones fell in a close one against Team Massie on Sunday Night by a final score of 79-70. This Team is talented enough to win games in this league. This year they just haven’t. Their roster is full of talent and have lots of experience under their belts. They are led by a very tough and veteran Captain Gilles Jones who once again led this team in scoring on Sunday night, dropping 18 points. Unfortunately, his squad didn’t have enough to surpass Team Massie on Sunday evening, but this must be a galvanizing moment for this club. They can only look at one game at a time and take care of business with what’s in front of them. They’ll look to pick up that third win post-Super Bowl against Team Maione when we return to action on Feb. 11.

Team Malvin (The Bucket List) – East – 4-9

Is Team Malvin a Top-11 Team? We certainly think so. They are much higher than that. However, the 2017-18 season has been tough on Team Malvin and right now they just aren’t playing their best ball. Well, Nikko seems to be playing great ball. He had 27 on Sunday. This team has size and athleticism and when they work hard on defense it really is tough to score on them. This Sunday they gave up almost 90 points, albeit it was against the highest scoring team in the league in Team Harlander. It is extremely tough to win in this league when you give up that many points. It’s time for them to flip the switch and start putting together some victories before the playoffs get here. They get another tough opponent in Team Hampton when we return after the Super Bowl. A game they need to win to stay in contention.

That’s it for Week 13. Enjoy the Super Bowl and we’ll be back in action on Sunday Feb. 11!
