2017-18 THE Chicago Hoops Week 5 – (Nov. 12)

Updated: November 17, 2017

We are now 5 Games in for everyone.. 5 Games is usually enough of a sample size to really analyze what a Team has going on.. What we have been thinking for weeks, but are assured of now — #1 Team McNichols and new #2 Team Hanessian (both 5-0) are the real deals and they are every bit of the favorites for the Crown that they appear to be.. Also – can’t go any further before shouting out Team Massie’s Dylan Kremer who put up a cool FIFTY points on Sunday Night. Meanwhile, Team Schwartz is off to their best start in Franchise history and seem to be only getting better at 4-1.  They along with Teams Hampton and Purimetla round out this Week’s Top-5. Scroll down to see where everyone else winds up!

Scheduling Note: We have Games on Sunday Nov. 19 but will be off for Thanksgiving on Nov. 26 and then return on Sunday Dec. 3.

Power Rankings

1. Team McNichols (Chipotle) – South – 5-0

Team McNichols got to 5-0 on Sunday Night by absolutely destroying 2015-16 Champs Team Reisner by a score of 92-55.  These guys are looking to not just Win Games but to make sure that their opponents fear them come Playoff time. They had 5 guys in double figures, headlined by Mike Kennedy’s 21 and Joe Kozak’s 19. They are just so deep and can hurt you from everywhere on the court. They look to make it 6 straight out of the gate on Sunday against Team Harris.

2. Team Hanessian (CEA Study Abroad) – East – 5-0

Team Hanessian jumps into the #2 spot following their epic 20-pt W over former #2 Team Purimetla in what was a battle of Undefeated Teams on Sunday Night.  They made it look easy. These guys can really shoot and get after it on Defense. That’s a recipe for Winning. Michael Halusek had 25 points and continues to be one of the most underrated Players in the League (huge steal from Team Hampton for these guys). Sterling Williams added 15 points as well. They will be favored to get to 6-0 on Sunday Night when they take on Team James.

3. Team Hampton (Crystal Lake CDJ) – South – 4-1

Team Hampton secured a spot in the Top-3 on Sunday Night by getting their 4th Win in 5 Games to start the year.. They won by 23 against an always solid #11 Team Dean crew. Their lone Loss came in Week 2 to Undefeated #1 Team McNichols by a few points – so it’s safe to say these guys are playing well out of the gate.. Both Josh Davis and Corey Hutchinson each had 20 points on Sunday Night. Bryant Orange added 17. Next up is the unranked Team Jones who is reeling a bit.. Team Hampton should be able to get to 5-1.

4. Team Schwartz (StudentCity) – East – 4-1

Team Schwartz has deserved the move up into the #4 position this week. They are 4-1 and hold Wins over some of the League’s very best. Most recently they defeated Team Maione, who are currently struggling, but have been one of the best Franchises in the League for the past handful of years.  Team Schwartz is not messing around in 2017. Jermaine Johnson went off for 35 points on Sunday. Ryan Werntz had 16 and Ausitn Brown had 15. Double figures for Derrick Davis and Jon Sider too. That type of production spread out through a handful of Players is a recipe for success. They take on #9 Team Massie in Week 6.

5. Team Purimetla (Biaggi’s) – West – 4-1

Team Purimetla suffered their first Loss of the Season at the hands of new #2 Team Hanessian.  They Lost by 20 in a Game that they would rather just forget. They are a very good Team, and those good Teams tend to bounce back quickly.. You can expect that from them here.. Marquez Brown had 22 and Adam Jones had 15.. They just didn’t get much else going Offensively in this one.. Next up is Defending Champs #6  Team Lalez. That will be The Bucket List Game of the Week!

6. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – East – 3-2

Team Lalez got the W on Sunday Night – and in a rare move – actually moved back a spot in the Rankings.  With Team Schwartz getting to 4-1 and holding a Week 1 Win over them, they just deserved the nod right now.. Team Lalez will get their Top-5 spot back after Week 6 should they prevail against Team Purimetla in The Bucket List Game of the Week.. Now, as for last Sunday, they beat Team James by 13. Scott Campbell scored 29. Captain Benny Lalez had 20 and Dave Gershenzon scored 16 in this one. Their Game with Team Purimetla could be a Preview of a Championship Sunday match-up..

7. Team Harlander (SLA Insurance) – South – 3-2

Holding steady at #7 this week is Team Harlander who got their 2nd straight W, and are now over the .500 mark for the first time this Season. They took down Team Jones 102-81 in an up-and-down affair. These guys really like to get out and run and provide space for their multitude of shooters. Connor Grotton, Calvin Kang and Phil McNeal all scored 20+ on Sunday Night. Their 3 other Players were also in double figures as well. They will play #11 Team Dean in Week 6.

8. Team Max (Southview Athletics) – South – 2-3

What a difference a couple weeks makes… Team Max started off 0-3 but they have been able to shake off the slow start and have rattled off two straight Wins now to hop into the #8 spot. Max Shulruff went for 30 and Paul Wirtz scored 27 to shoulder much of the scoring burden for Team Max against Team Harris in their thrilling 80-78 Win on Sunday. They look to get back to .500 against familiar foes 2015-16 Team Reisner in Week 6.

9. Team Massie (Theory) – West – 2-3

Team Massie got their 2nd Win of the Season on Sunday Night and this one came against last year’s 3rd place finishers Team Malvin.. Oh and they won by 47 AND scored 120 as a Team. Team Massie has figured it out folks. Doesn’t hurt that future All Star Dylan Kremer scored FIFTY. Jeff Dirkin chipped in with 26 as well. Captain Brock had 16. Tim Brennen had 15.  That is a LOT of points from your top-4 scorers. Even if you wiped away Kremer’s 50, that would be a strong top-3. They look to get back to the .500 mark on Sunday Night against #4 Team Schwartz in what may steal the show in Week 6.

10. Team Reisner (Chicago Trolley) – North – 2-3

Team Reisner fell on Sunday Night to Undefeated #1 Team McNichols and it was a Game that they’d rather forget. Andrew Marks did have a nice Game with 22 points, but in general it was just not one of their better Games. They normally are as good as it gets on the Defensive end but allowed 92 on Sunday (their most allowed this season). They look to bounce back and get back to the .500 mark against familiar foes #8 Team Max.

11. Team Dean (Live Clean CHI) – North – 2-3

Team Dean dropped their Week 5 Game to Team Hampton in one of their lesser performances of the Season. No shame in losing to Team Hampton who has finished each of the past 3 seasons in the Top-3. These guys are on the verge of breaking through and going on an extended run. Courtney Griffin had 21 points on Sunday Night and is scoring 19 PPG on the season. Brandon Williams added 15. They are going to be tested once again in Week 6 – when they take on #7 Team Harlander!

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Harris (Schweitzer Title) – North – 1-4

Team Harris fell by just two points against #8 Team Max on Sunday Night in a Game that was certainly winnable.. Just needed an extra bounce or two to go their way. Michael Goldstein had his best Game of the Season with 27 points. Eric Handrich continues to be a beast in the paint with 20 points and Brad Tivin had 16 points. They look to shock the League on Sunday Night when they take on #1 Team McNichols – they are more than capable of handing them their first Loss.

Team James (Stanley’s Kitchen) – West – 1-4

Team James fell to Defending Champs Team Lalez on Sunday Night – no shame in that. Dave Altman continues to get comfortable on his new (old) Team and scored 23 points on the night. Captain Christian had 19 as well. These guys will be able to turn it around – just need to see one go their way.. They will take on Undefeated #2 Team Hanessian during Week 6.

Team Jones (Rockin’ Refuel) – North – 1-4 & Team Maione (The Bucket List) – West – 1-4

We’re going to take Team Jones and Team Maione together this week as their current situations are extremely similar.. Both Teams sit at 1-4. Both Teams have top-flight Rosters and are just not seeing the results we are used to seeing out of them thus far in 2017-18. Their issues have mostly come on the Defensive end where both Teams are in the Bottom-4 of the League for Points Against Per Game.. That means they need incredible Offensive performances each week to Win and it’s just not happening right now. They need to treat the first 5 weeks as “pre-season” and just start over from 0-0. Both Teams have the talent to rattle off 10 or 11 Wins in the next 13 Games and put this slow start in the rear view mirror. Captain Gilles had 35 on Sunday. Captain Bradley Deutsch and Chris Ray had 26 a piece for Team Maione. Team Jones will take on #3 Team Hampton and Team Maione will take on last year’s 3rd place finishers Team Malvin in Week 6.  Now is the time to turn it around.

Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – East – 0-5

For Team Malvin – they can look above to the Team Jones and Team Maione (who they play in Week 6) and basically take the same message.. They need to forget about the last 5 Games. Treat it as if it hasn’t happened and focus on the 13 Games they still have to play. Matt Merrigan had 31 and provided the outside shooting they had been missing without him but it still wasn’t enough to defeat Team Massie on Sunday. They are allowing 80 PPG and that is just not a sustainable way to earn Ws. They look to turn it around in Week 6 against Team Maione who is in a similar boat.

That’s it for Week 5. Good Luck on Sunday Night for Week 6!
