2017-18 THE Chicago Hoops Week 6 – (Nov. 19)

By
Updated: November 28, 2017

Finishing up Week 6 means we are officially done with 1/3 of the Regular Season.  Can look at that a few ways.. 1) The Teams that are at the top of the Standings are certainly for real. The 6-0s (McNichols and Hanessian) and the 5-1s ( Team Hampton) have shown enough during a big enough body of work to show they are among the elite this Season.. 2) There are still 12 weeks left to turn it around for groups that have not had the starts they envisioned. There are a handful of Teams at 1-5 and none of them have pictured the first 6 weeks to go like that.. Plenty of time.  Let’s get to the Rankings!

Power Rankings

1. Team McNichols (Chipotle) – South – 6-0

Team McNichols keeps on chugging right along here as they are now up to 6-0. Joe Kozak was their leading scorer in the Win over Team Harris – scoring 19. Boris Cayemitte added 15 and Captain Chris + Dante Logan were both in double figures as well. They are #2 in Offense right now and #3 in Defense in Points For and Points Against. That’s how you go in 6-0 folks. They look to make it 7 against Team Dean.

2. Team Hanessian (CEA Study Abroad) – East – 6-0

Safe to say no one pegged Team Hanessian for a 6-0 start.  Well, that’s exactly where they stand right now and are showing no signs of slowing down. In Week 6, they defeated Team James by 45+. Sterling Williams went for 37 to lead the League in scoring during Week 6. Breck Mahoney had 23 and Steve Login had 20 as well. 3 others were in double figures as well. SIX guys with 10 or points and 3 of them had 20+. That is depth. In Week 7 they take on Team Maione, who at 1-5, is the biggest surprise in the League. This is a group that routinely competes for Championships. This should be a fun one.

3. Team Hampton (Crystal Lake CDJ) – South – 5-1

Now 5-1 and seemingly more dangerous than ever.. In Week 6, Team Hampton took down Team Jones by 19. 3 scorers had 20+ .. Bryant Orange with 29, Josh Davis and Captain Randall Hampton. Matt Wolk added 16 too. That is a ton of scoring from your Top-4 right there. On any given night they can have several different guys just go off, which is why they are so difficult to defeat. If one guy is off, they have many others who can pick up the slack. They will take on the 2015-16 Champs Team Reisner in one of the highlights of Week 7.

4. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – East – 4-2

After a 1-2 start, Defending Champs have looked like themselves over the past few weeks.. Winning 3 in a row now. They took down #7 Team Purimetla (formerly #4) in impressive fashion. Scott Campbell scored 33 to lead them in Week 6. Dennis Mckinney and Dave Gershenzon each had 18 as well. Captain Benny had a dozen too. Again – if you look at the top Teams this week – depth is the key. Multiple guys contributing. They will look to make it 4 wins in a row during Week 7 when they face #8 Team Massie who is playing very well right now. That will be The Bucket List Game of the Week!

5. Team Harlander (SLA Insurance) – South – 4-2

Winners of 3 in a row, Team Harlander rounds out the Top-5 this week. They defeated Team Dean 85-61 on Sunday evening. Calvin Kang had 20. Phil McNeal had 18 and Ademilola Jr. Adekoya had 17. Both Captain Connor and Adam Gwardys had 14 a piece as well. 83 points from 5 guys is going to get you the W more often than not. They have a ton of shooting outside. Week 7 brings forth Team Harris who currently sits at 1-5.

6. Team Schwartz (StudentCity) – East – 4-2

Didn’t play their best Game in Week 6 but still sitting at 4-2, with plenty to be happy about as we exit the first trimester of the season. Austin Brown had 18 and Jermaine Johnson had 17 in the Loss to Team Massie. They, like every other Team that played Team Massie this season, struggled to keep Dylan Kremer in check – who scored 28. That guy can really shoot it. They look to rebound in Week 7 against #7 Team Purimetla who shares a 4-2 record with them currently.  This one could steal the show on Sunday Night if both Teams bring their best.

7. Team Purimetla (Biaggi’s) – West – 4-2

Natural to take a bit of a step back after having a nice winning-streak snapped. They just need to turn the tides back around here. They started 4-0 and clearly have enough to Win Games on Sundays. They fell to Defending Champs Team Lalez during Week 6 so no reason to push panic button for that. Marquez Brown had 30 in this one. Adam Jones, Captain Pete and Kevin Matos were all in double digits as well. They look to shake it off and get a big Win in Week 7 against #6 Team Schwartz.

8. Team Massie (Theory) – West – 3-3

Team Massie has won 2 in a row and are back to .500 for the first time since the start of the Season. It took a few weeks to get all the new pieces to gel with one another but they have officially done so now and this is one of the best Teams we have in the League as we head toward 2018. Dylan Kremer keeps giving us reasons to give him shoutouts. He led them in scoring again with 28. If you haven’t seen these guys play yet – he is really dynamic. Tim Brennen had 25 and big man Jeff Dirkin had 22. 75 points from your Top-3.. It’s a familiar story with the other top Teams in the League. You can’t just have one guy in this League.. It takes true depth.. They will get a true test in Week 7 with the Defending Champs Team Lalez in The Bucket List Game of the Week!

9. Team Reisner (Chicago Trolley) – North – 3-3

Team Reisner enters the Rankings at #9 this week following a Week 6 W over #10 Team Max. They were able to snap the mini-skid they were on and get back to .500 with the 82-72 Win. Marin Kukoc had his best Game of the Season with 27 points. Sam Gage also had a great night with 22 points and was a real force in the paint. Chris Kozloff added 14 and Adam Rhum had 11 as well. They will be a part of what should be a great Game in Week 7 as they take on #3 Team Hampton who is currently 5-1. They have had more success than most against them in recent years.

10. Team Max (Southview Athletics) – South – 2-4

Team Max fell to Rivals Team Reisner on Sunday Night.  They got 17 a piece from Max Shulruff and Michael Alfieri. They also saw the return to All Sports Series of past Captain – Sam Sternberg – who definitely gave them a lift. Great to see Sam back out there. Jesse Pollans and Captain Tyler were in double figures as well but they just didn’t have answer down low for Team Reisner. They look to get back on track in Week 7 against Team Jones – who is at 1-5 right now.

11. Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – East – 1-5

Team Malvin got their first Win of the Season and it couldn’t have come any sooner for them.. They can now at least distance themselves from their nightmare start and begin the trek back up the Standings. They defeated a very good Team Maione squad (despite their record) and seem to be turning back into the Contender they were a year ago. Max Needle had 26 in one of his best Games yet and Brandon Snowden made his 2017-18 debut for Team Malvin with 25. No surprise they got their first Win during his first appearance. Rodney Clark and Matt Merrigan each scored 18 as well. Huge night for these guys. They look to start leapfrogging Teams in the Standings in Week 7 when they take on the 1-5 Team James.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Dean (Live Clean CHI) – North – 2-4

Not their prettiest Game and now have dropped 3 straight. They just need to put 44 minutes together and they can exhale again. There are so many good Teams out there that you can easily just drop a few in a row if you are not playing your best. Brandon Williams scored 22. Courtney Griffin had 14 and Captain Tred scored 11. They take on #1 Team McNichols in Week 7… If they can turn it around then it would definitely get notice from the entire the League.

Team Harris (Schweitzer Title) – North – 1-5

Team Harris lost to Team McNichols during Week 6 by 20. Not one that they will hang their hats on later in the season. It’s just one Game so they should just forget it. Tony Rizzo had 22 and led their 4 scorers who were in double figures.  They were without several key pieces once again and that will be the story for them until they can consistently get everyone there on Sundays. Their record will greatly improve when that happens. They will take on #5 Team Harlander in Week 7.

Team James (Stanley’s Kitchen) – West – 1-5

They’ve dropped 4 in a row now with their most recent Loss coming to the 6-0 Team Hanessian. No shame in that. They just need to start treating it as if they are 0-0 and play their best ball. Dave Altman had 18. Captain Christian James had 17. They have enough talent to get Wins. Just need to buckle down on the Defensive end. In Week 7 they face off with #11 Team Malvin (also 1-5).

Team Jones (Rockin’ Refuel) – North – 1-5

Team Jones was 1-0 and Ranked #4 following Week 1.. Since then, the wheels have fallen off for them as they have dropped 5 in a row. The Thanksgiving break has come at the perfect time just so they can reset a bit. Captain Gilles Jones had 21, Tre Williams scored 17 and Michael Sommer went for 15 in Week 6. Talent wise, they are stronger than the group they had last season which finished as the #6 seed. They just need to get back to that version of themselves, playing to their strengths and getting stops on D. They look to get back on track against #10 Team Max in Week 7.

Team Maione (The Bucket List) – West – 1-5

Let’s start with the positives… Captain Bradley Deutsch got engaged since the last set of Power Rankings.. Sending a big Congrats his way!  This ends the section of positives.. They have dropped 5 in a row. Never have we seen this group even sniff a losing-skid as long as this one. The break will hopefully do them good and give them some time to make adjustments. They lost by 18 to Team Malvin, who was previously winless on Sunday Night.. Tellef Lundevall had 26, Dylan Richter had 24 and Chris Wroblewski had 23. They played with just 5 guys yet again and their lack of a bench each week is really haunting them. In Week 7 they hope to start their 180 with a Game Undefeated #2 Team Hanessian. Maybe this is exactly what they’ll need…

That’s it for Week 6. Good Luck on Sunday and Happy Thanksgiving.
