2017-18 THE Chicago Hoops Week 7 – (Dec. 3)

Updated: December 6, 2017

All but two of the Games played during Week 7 were decided by fewer than 10 points. It was an extremely competitive night highlighted by Teams who know the time is now to make a move in the Standings. Teams McNichols and Hanessian have tacked on the extra point, if you will, to their win-streaks to start the season.. Both now sit at 7-0. Teams Hampton and Harlander are not far behind and both are sporting nice active win-streaks of their own right now.. We’ll break down everything in the Rankings below!

Power Rankings

1. Team McNichols (Chipotle) – South – 7-0

They have a tight grip on the #1 spot right now. Their latest Win came against Team Dean.. It was not an easy one.. They were tied at 87 with a couple minutes left when Boris Cayemitte hit a huge 3 (of his 17 points) to give them the lead and they never looked back. Dante Logan led them in scoring with 21. Matt Gossett had 18 in his debut. Lorenzo Fiol had 16 as well. Both Captain Chris and Rodney Metellus each had a dozen.. That includes Rodney’s thunderous dunk in the 2nd half (beginning of this week’s video). They look to make it 8-0 against #5 Team Purimetla in what will be the Bucket List Game of the Week!

2. Team Hanessian (CEA Study Abroad) – East – 7-0

Team Hanessian had another big-time Win on Sunday Night. If you strip away the records from the past 6 weeks and just go on historical data from past Leagues – Team Maione is one of the top-tier squads you can come across in the Chicago Hoops League scene, and they were just the latest tally in the Win column for these guys who – let us remind you – are still just playing their first handful+ of games together.. Michael Halusek had 29. Steve Login scored 19.  Breck Mahoney had 16 and Sterling Williams had 15 and 13 boards. They will look to get to 8-0 v. the 2015-16 Champs #9 Team Reisner.

3. Team Hampton (Crystal Lake CDJ) – South – 6-1

Team Hampton cruised to their 6th Win of the Season. They easily got past Team Reisner on Sunday Night. Josh Davis had 31 to lead the Team in scoring. Captain Randall Hampton scored 17. Bryant Orange had 16. Mitchell Bouie and Corey Hutchinson were both in double figures as well. Looking ahead to Week 8 – they will take on old Rivals Team Maione, who have some how lost 6-straight. Can’t take them likely.

4. Team Harlander (SLA Insurance) – South – 5-2

Moving up a spot following their Week 7 W against Team Harris is Team Harlander. They won by 21 and are really clicking with one another. They have a unique combination of athleticism and shooting which is giving opposing Defenses fits. They are the only Team in the League averaging 90+ right now. Phil McNeal had 18 points as did Connor Grotton. Calvin Kang went for 16, Ademilola Jr. Adekoya had 15 and Adam Gwardys scored 14 points. 5 guys with 14+. They will take on #6 Team Massie in a Game that will likely steal the show in Week 8.

5. Team Purimetla (Biaggi’s) – West – 5-2

Team Purimetla got a really big Win on Sunday Night. Not just in terms of the Standings and Rankings – as they knocked off #7 Team Schwartz, whom they entered Week 7 tied with.. But, they also had dropped two straight and just from a mental state – it’s big that they snapped their mini-skid here. Adam Jones had 21 in the Win to lead them in scoring. All Sports Series vet Ross Chukerman made his debut for them and scored 16.  They look to continue snagging Wins in what will be their biggest test to date against #1 Team McNichols.

6. Team Massie (Theory) – West – 4-3

Team Massie is rolling. Winners of 3 in a row and 4 of their last 5. Their most recent Win saw them take down Defending Champs Team Lalez in what was likely the best Game of the Night. Dylan Kremer went for 25 yet again. Tim Brennen went for 17 while both Captain Brock Massie and big man Jeff Dirkin each scored 16. They are going to take part in yet another big time Game during Week 8.. They are up against #4 Team Harlander in what should be one of if not the most exciting Games on Sunday Night.

7. Team Schwartz (StudentCity) – East – 4-3

Team Schwartz played well for about 30 minutes on Sunday but ran out of gas with just 5 players in the building.  They were just flat on their jumpers over the past 15 minutes and Team Purimetla was able to catch-up and grab a lead down the stretch. Jermaine Johnson led with 25 points as he continues to produce each and every week. Austin Brown had 17 as well in this one.  They look to rebound from this 2-game slide against Team Dean on Sunday Night.

8. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – East – 4-3

Team Lalez was a part of a great Game on Sunday Night but just came up a few buckets short against the streaking #6 Team Massie.  If you want evidence of the League’s improvement in 2017 – you can look no further than Team Lalez who are the Defending Champs and 3x Champs of this League. They have already lost 3 times – something that is not ordinary for them. This is no indictment on them either.. The League is just that good right now. The usual suspects had big nights here – Scott Campbell scored 27 and Dave Gershenzon had 22. They’ll look to get back in the Win column in Week 8 against Team Harris.

9. Team Reisner (Chicago Trolley) – North – 3-4

It has been an up and down kind of start to the season for the 2015-16 Champs, but in reality they are ahead of their normal pace. These guys have been slow starters for years now and it’s actually an encouraging start for them as they always seem to turn it on in the last portion of the Season. This past week against Team Hampton was certainly a forgettable game for them. Marin Kukoc had 25 and Captain Jordan had a dozen as well. They will take on the Undefeated #2 Team Hanessian in Week 8.

10. Team Max (Southview Athletics) – South – 3-4

Team Max had a nice week on Sunday Night – especially Captain Tyler – who went for FORTY to lead the League in scoring during Week 7. Max Shulruff had 24 and Jesse Pollans contributed a baker’s dozen to the Win. They defeated Team Jones 93-85.  They have won 3 of 4 after starting 0-3 and certainly have turned everything around for the better. Week 8 will bring forth the 1-6 Team James, so they will be favored to get back to .500 on Sunday.

11. Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – East – 2-5

Holding firm in the #11 spot is Team Malvin. They have now won 2 in a row after the nightmare 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday they got past Team James 68-60. Brandon Staffeil is really getting into a groove. He scored 22 to lead the way. Three others were in double figures – Captain Mike, Tom Garvin and Max Needle. They will try and get their 3rd straight Win against Team Jones on Sunday Night.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Dean (Live Clean CHI) – North – 2-5

They pushed Undefeated #1 Team McNichols to the brink.. The Game was tied with just a couple minutes left to play, but they couldn’t come away with the victory. It did show that they are capable of playing with anyone in the League though and they should not be taken lightly. Both Courtney Griffin and Brandon Williams scored 22 points a piece in this one. Week 8 will put them up against #7 Team Schwartz.

Team Harris (Schweitzer Title) – North – 1-6

Team Harris fell in Week 7 against the offensive-juggernaut that is Team Harlander. Another Game with no bench for these guys… Michael Goldstein had 20 and Brad Tivin scored 18. Sam Shiner and Captain Brian also scored in double figures but these guys need more depth in terms of body count to start getting Ws on Sundays. They get a matchup with Defending Champs #8 Team Lalez on Sunday Night.

Team James (Stanley’s Kitchen) – West – 1-6

Team James came up just a bit short against Team Malvin on Sunday Night. Dave Altman scored 20 and Captain Christian had 19 to combine for 2/3 of the Teams’ points in Week 7. They just need to find a couple other consistent ways to score. They will be fine. They will play the surging #10 Team Max on Sunday Night. This is certainly a winnable game and one they will definitely want to get as we head into the new year here soon (and second half of the season)..

Team Jones (Rockin’ Refuel) – North – 1-6

Really entertaining Game with Team Max to tip-off the Games on Sunday Night.. Unfortunately, they just came up a bit short when all was said and done. Captain Gilles Jones had 31 and it was fun to see him and Captain Tyler Max sort of go toe to toe with buckets in the second half here. Garrett Staniec also had 19 here. These guys actually looked like themselves on Sunday Night. The Wins will come if they just get back to what they do best.. They play #11 Team Malvin, winners of a couple in a row during Week 8.

Team Maione (The Bucket List) – West – 1-6

The skid was extended to 6 on Sunday Night after falling by 5 points to Undefeated #2 Team Hanessian on Sunday Night. Chris Wroblewski had 23, Tellef Lundevall scored 21, Chris Ray had 16 and Captain Brad put in 15. The Offense is fine. The issue has been there Defense. They are allowing the second most points per Game in the League. You can’t win that way. Just can’t. Even with the extremely talented scoring options they have. They are going to take on Rivals Team Hampton. This is a group they have had many battles with over the years and hopefully that familiarity can pull them back into a mode that we haven’t seen from them yet in 2017-18.

That’s it for Week 7. See everyone on Sunday.
