2017-18 THE Chicago Hoops Week 8 – (Dec. 10)

Updated: December 14, 2017

Week 8 is in the books. We had a few fantastic finishes once again on Sunday Night including a Double-OT thriller that saw #1 Team McNichols stay undefeated against Team Purimetla. #2 Team Hanessian matched them with a huge comeback W. They were down by as much as 17 points but fought back to earn the Win and get to 8-0. Team Hampton fell on Sunday Night and as a result the Top-2 Teams now have at least a 2-Game lead on everyone in the League. Just a scheduling reminder – we play our last Games in 2017 this coming Sunday (Dec. 17). Then, we have our Winter Break on Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. We’ll return on Sunday Jan. 7 for Week 10.

Power Rankings

1. Team McNichols (Chipotle) – South – 8-0

What a finish to Sunday Night’s Game for #1 Team McNichols. Team Purimetla who they had playoff battles with a year ago – pushed them to the brink – but they managed to stay undefeated and get to 8-0 on Sunday Night. Rodney Metellus hit a huge 3 in the second Overtime and led the Team with 17 points. Dante Logan had 16 and Joe Kozak scored 14 in this one. They look to close out 2017 strong at 9-0 against Team Massie who will be hungry to get back into the gym following a rough L in Week 8.

2. Team Hanessian (CEA Study Abroad) – East – 8-0

They came out of the gates a bit sleepy and were down 19-2 at one point. They kept their composure though, buckled down and started to mount their comeback. Sterling Williams had 29 points and was gigantic in their second half run. Kieran Ramsey had 16 as well to go along with several others in double digits. They will look to close out a perfect first half of the Regular Season (and 2017) against the reeling Team Jones on Sunday Night.

3. Team Harlander (SLA Insurance) – South – 6-2

Team Harlander aka the Human Highlights!  They were on another level during Week 8. There were alley-oops, there were half court heaves, there were other dunks, there were 3s. They played so well and really just dominated Team Massie. They get the bump into the #3 spot as a result. Phil McNeal had 22, Connor Harlander scored 21, Calvin Kang went for 20 and Elliott Owusu put in 15 points. These guys are so explosive. They will take on #6 Team Purimetla in what could be the Game of the Night!

4. Team Hampton (Crystal Lake CDJ) – South – 6-2

Team Hampton dropped just their second Game of the Season and their first since Week 2 on Sunday Night. They were playing against old Rivals Team Maione in what was a contest that may have re-ignited Team Maione’s season. Team Hampton was without a few key pieces in this one. Joshua Davis scored 22 and was their leading scorer. Corey Hutchinson had 17 and Captain Randall Hampton went for 15 on the night. They’ll look to end 2017 on a high note when they take on Team James on Sunday night.

5. Team Lalez (Hakimian Imports) – East – 5-3

Back in the Winner’s circle during Week 8 was Defending Champs Team Lalez. They defeated Team Harris by 19 in what was a great Offensive performance for them. All Star Scott Campbell had 29. New Dad – Ben Lazarov was back in action with 23 and David Gershenzon scored 22. They are going to take on a sneaky and athletic Team Dean squad that is hungry to get back into the Rankings to close out 2017.

6. Team Purimetla (Biaggi’s) – West – 5-3

Team Purimetla had the Undefeated #1 McNichols on the ropes but just couldn’t come away with what would have been a key W, falling in 2OT. Adam Jones went off for 32 in this one. He played extremely well. Josh Blackwell and Jonny Chaikin were both in double digits here as well. These guys proved yet again they can play with the League’s best and they will look to finish the first half of the Regular Season at a stellar 6-3. Standing in their way will be #3 Team Harlander in The Bucket List Game of the Week!

7. Team Max (Southview Athletics) – South – 4-4

Team Max got back to .500 on Sunday Night and considering their start to the Season – that is a great sign. They defeated Team James during Week 8 to earn their 4th Win, all of which have come in the past 5 weeks. Captain Tyler had 25 and Paul Wirtz had 14 in the W. They will take on familiar foes in Team Maione who finally got off the schnide this past Sunday.. So it will certainly be an interesting Game – one in which Team Max needs to Win in order to finish the first half of the Regular Season over the .500 mark.

8. Team Schwartz (StudentCity) – East – 4-4

Team Schwartz dropped their 3rd straight Game on Sunday Night. They played well but just couldn’t come out on top in the final moments against Team Dean.  They had their full compliment of Players though and it is a great sign of things to come for them.. They are a really good Team and with an actual bench they could go the whole way. Derrick Davis had 26 and Jermaine Johnson scored 16. They look to end the first half of the season and the 2017 calendar year on a good note against Team Harris in Week 9.

9. Team Massie (Theory) – West – 4-4

This was a Game Team Massie should and will forget soon. They didn’t play well. They were without leading scorer Dylan Kremer to boot and they played against the uber-athletic Team Harlander. It was a recipe for disaster and that’s what it was.. They’ll bounce right back though.. Jeff Dirkin scored 20 and Tim Brennen had 16. These guys take on Undefeated #1 Team McNichols on Sunday Night and are very capable of knocking them off. That would be the leading story heading into 2018…

10. Team Malvin (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – East – 3-5

3 Wins in a row now for Team Malvin and it is safe to say they have regained their form from a year ago. They needed last second heroics from Max Needle here to get past Team Jones. Needle finished with 33 including a huge shot to steal the lead late. Mark Swanson added 16.  They will now look to make it 4 in a row before the Winter Break here and their next Game will be with 2015-16 Champs Team Reisner, who share a 3-5 record with them. Big Game for sure.

11. Team Maione (The Bucket List) – West – 2-6

FINALLY. Last week in the Rankings we called out their Defense has the culprit for their un-Maione like 6-Game Losing streak.. Well, they responded! All it took was a match-up with old Rivals Team Hampton and they got after it on both ends. They held Team Hampton, who is the 3rd highest-scoring Team in the League, to 13 points under their average. They also allowed about 15 points less than they are averaging. It was a team effort. On Offense – Chris Ray scored 29, Dylan Richter had 21 and Chris Wroblewski had 16. We think they are back.. We’ll be sure of it if they end 2017 with a Win against Team Max on Sunday.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Dean (Live Clean CHI) – North – 3-5

Big Win for Team Dean. They gutted it out against Team Schwartz and it couldn’t have come at a better time as it stopped their losing-skid. Courtney Griffin had 18 points in about 16 minutes of play to give them some firepower early. Jesse Rice had 18 during the Game as well. William Boyd scored 15 and Captain Tred was in double figures. They will take on Defending Champs Team Lalez in Week 9 when they close out the first half of the Regular Season.

Team Harris (Schweitzer Title) – North – 1-7

Team Harris fell to Team Lalez on Sunday Night. They just couldn’t get stops in this one. Eric Handrich had 20 points in this one and Michael Goldstein scored 17. Jake Shlofrock was in double figures as well. You have to stay positive about this Team because their best is as good as anyone in the League. They just need their entire Team to show it. They get Team Schwartz who is also on a 3-Game skid in Week 9. One streak will be snapped.

Team James (Stanley’s Kitchen) – West – 1-7

Team James took a Loss in what was a tight battle with Team Max on Sunday Night. Dave Altman scored 23 and Captain Christian tallied 14. These guys are going to get it straight. Too much talent not to. They take on #4 Team Hampton who will be hungry after suffering their 2nd Loss during Week 8. Can they pull the upset to close 2017?

Team Jones (Rockin’ Refuel) – North – 1-7

They almost got back on track on Sunday Night, but fell the end to Team Malvin. They had the lead late but couldn’t shut the door on the Win. It was a complete performance though and showed positive signs for their 2018 run. Captain Gilles led with 15 and Michael Sommer had 14. They will be tested in their final game of the first half – Undefeated #2 Team Hanessian awaits them on Sunday Night.

Team Reisner (Chicago Trolley) – North – 3-5

Team Reisner falls out of the Rankings this week after their L to Team Hanessian on Sunday Night. They started the Game on fire! They were up 19-2 and carried that big lead for much of the first half but just ran out of gas and couldn’t get buckets late. Andrew Marks had 17. Chris Kozloff had 15. Sam Gage had 14 and Marin Kukoc 12. They spread it out well just needed more in the second half. They finish up 2017 against Team Malvin who is rolling – on a 3 Game win streak.

That’s it for Week 8. See everyone on Sunday Night!
