Playoff Review

Opening Round Hoops –

8. Team Delta Sig (StudentCity Orange) v. 9. Team AEPi (Mezes Navy)

Winner plays 1. Team DKE SR1 (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

Both Teams knew it was a tough task to get through to the Final4. The Winner here would have to go against #1 overall seed Team DKE SR1 immediately following.. Both groups desperately wanted to have that chance. This happened to be the best Game of the Night.. AEPi and Delta Sig went back and forth with each Team making big shots down the stretch.. Ian Cosgrove went for 26 for Delta Sig while Kyle Frankel and Noah Allanoff led the way for AEPi with 19 and 18 respectively.. In the end 9. AEPi would come away with their biggest W of the season and advance to the Elite8!

For Team Delta Sig, they played very well in their final Game and Captain Ethan Lutz and co. will still have another crack at the Crown next Spring when they are Seniors. Thanks for playing and good luck with the rest of school!

Elite8 H0ops –

1. Team DKE SR1 (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) v. 9. Team AEPi (Mezes Navy)

#9 AEPi had little time to celebrate their big Opening Round W, as the #1 overall seeded Team DKE SR1 was waiting for them in the Elite8. Depth was going to be a major factor for AEPi, as it’s not an easy thing to play back to back Games especially when the first was a nail-biter. They did their best to stay in it early but Team DKE SR1 showed why they were in fact the #1 Team coming into the Playoffs.. They would pull away and clinch their place in the Final4! Justin Schnell had 22 for DKE SR1 to lead them.. Can they finish up next Sunday and win the whole thing!?

Kyle Frankel and Alec Sandberg had a dozen each for AEPi in Game 2.. It was a stellar final performance from this young AEPi squad that will have a few more chances in the coming years. Captain Anthony Aronovitz now has some experience under his belt as a GM and these guys should be in great shape moving forward.. They are one of only a handful of groups to leave this season with a Playoff W and that is something to build upon. Thanks for playing!

4. Team Sammy (Schweitzer Title) v. 5. Team DKE SR2 (Ella Designs Jewelry)

This one had all the makings of being the Game of the Round but #4 Team Sammy quickly had other plans.. They came out with swarming Defense and really extended a big lead.. It was over quickly. Gabe Grand went for 17 and Captain Matt Fidel was in double digits. Matthew Benedict scored 15 for DKE SR2 in this one. Team Sammy now moves on and they will take on the other DKE SR squad.. #1 DKE SR1 in the Final4 with a spot in the Championship on the line!

For Team DKE SR2, they exit a bit earlier than they had hoped but they had a great season. They finished in the Top5 during the Regular Season – in what was a very crowded and talented League. This is a group that will not get another chance as a full unit in Ann Arbor as many will graduate this Spring but we hope to seem them in All Sports Series again in the future. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Theta Chi (Chipotle) v. 7. Team DKE FR2 (StudentCity Gray)

Team Theta Chi had built up an incredible amount of momentum heading into the Playoffs. They are undefeated since Week 4 and jumped many Teams during that stretch to climb up to the #2 overall seed. They seem determined to go all the way and their first stop on the way to the Crown was Captain Jon Wellek and the DKE FR2 crew.. Well.. Reid Marks went for 42 on behalf of Theta Chi while Connor Jackett and Ryan Tooker each scored 21 points.. That is 84 points between 3 guys.. Hard to beat… Team Theta Chi would move on to the Final4!

Team DKE FR2 had a great Freshmen season. It’s a testament to both them and the DKE FR1 squad that both had such great a year because it made it seem almost ordinary.. Well, it wasn’t. We rarely see Freshmen Teams have such success in All Sports Series. They should be proud. Mathew Iacone led them in scoring on their final night. They will come back with experience on their side next Spring and look to advance further into the Playoffs. Captain Jon Wellek will be a part of the College/Prep League in Highland Park, IL this Summer as well. Thanks for playing!

3. Team DKE FR1 (SLA Insurance) v. 6. Team DKE SO (Mezes Gold)

Last but certainly not least was the all DKE battle for the Final4. We touched on it in the preview.. In many ways Team DKE SO was looking at a mirror image of themselves from a year ago.. Upstart Freshmen (from DKE) determined to make a name for themselves in their first Playoff action.. Well, this one was one of the better Games of the Night as each Team battled get to the Final4. Both squads were battling fiercely on Defense and each basket scored felt like a victory.. Eventually DKE SO would get the lead and at the end they left with their hands raised.. They’d get back to the Final4 for the second straight year!

For Team DKE FR1, not enough can be said about these guys in their debut season. Captain Ben Wellek and co. put together one of the best Freshmen Regular Seasons we have ever seen. They were competitive each and every week… This is a group that likely has a Championship in their future! Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the first Sunday of the Playoffs. We will Crown the Champs on Sunday!
