Playoff Review

1. Team Rosen (Spikeball) v. 4. Team Fat Sal’s – Softball

Team Rosen elected to play Softball for their Final4 battle with Team Fat Sal’s. No surprise here as these two Teams met on the diamond back in March and we saw Team Rosen win handedly there. These two clubs know each other extremely well. Many of them played together last Fall in the “All Sports” League before splitting this Spring.. Both groups have fared well post-separation but only one could make the Championship! This Game followed a similar script as their first Softball encounter.. Team Rosen and Joe Carmical (3 for 3 with 2 RBI) jumped out to an early lead and rode that out for a big win! #1 Team Rosen was headed to the Championship Game!

For Team Fat Sal’s, it was a great run to the Final4. They had a bunch of success this season led by Captain Matt Feigin. It was a pleasure having them in the League and hopefully we’ll see them back in the Fall. Have a great Summer! Thanks for playing!

2. Team ZBT JR (SLA Insurance) v. 3. Team SAE SO (StudentCity Pink) – Football

The Winner here would move on to play #1 Team Rosen in the Championship. With Team Rosen electing for Softball for their Final4 Game with Fat Sal’s, Flag Football was left for this semi-final Game. These two groups met on the gridiron all the way back before Spring Break and we saw ZBT JR run away with the W as they did in all of their Flag Football contests. It was certainly going to be an uphill battle for John Hurley and co. here.. They were up for the challenge though. This Game went back and forth with each Team making some big time plays. John Covert scored a couple times for SAE SO and Captain Brent Rubin made it happen once again, helping account for 3 scores on the day for his ZBT JR squad. In the end, Team ZBT JR got the W in what was a really well-played Game.. 22-18 and ZBT JR was headed to the Championship!

For Team SAE SO, it was a very strong debut campaign! They got a Playoff W in their first season – a feat that many cannot say. They were one drive away from getting to the Championship and defeating what was the strongest Football Team in the League. These guys have what it takes to take the next step in the Fall as they will enter with newfound experience. Thanks for playing!

1. Team Rosen (Spikeball) v. 2. Team ZBT JR (SLA Insurance) – Softball

and then there were two… As the higher seed Team Rosen elected (wisely) to play Softball and, thus, the Championship would be decided on the diamond. These were the strongest two Teams all season long and it is fitting that it came down to them for the inaugural Spring Crown.  Team Rosen had some momentum coming in from their Final4 softball W but they were up against much stiffer competition here.

As the Game got going, it was clear that hits were going to be at a premium here. Both Defenses were making plays all over the field. We saw a handful of double plays even. It came across as if both Teams had been playing 16″ for years (not just months). The innings kept passing by, with the score remaining knotted at 0. It was a true pitcher’s duel. The 5th would come and go, no score.. Same for the 6th. We would reach the 7th inning and when all 6 outs were recorded, still not one run had crossed for either Team. Extra Innings! We would go into the Top of the 8th with no runs scored in the entire Game and that is how the 8th would finish.. In to the 9th we’d go.. Both Teams were on edge while in the field but neither buckled. Play after play was made.  The top half of the 10th would pass and Team Rosen would record a 3rd out to head into their at-bats for the bottom of the inning. In the home half of the 10th, the #1 Seeded Team Rosen would get a base-runner on and, get him over to 3rd… Eventually they’d drive the ball to 2nd basemen who tried to pin down the runner at 3rd.. The ball would get past the 3rd basemen and the runner would cross home plate to end it! Team Rosen would win the Crown in Walk-off fashion!! More on them in just a minute.

For the Runners-Up Team ZBT JR, what a season.  It obviously ends in heartbreak but that can’t diminish what was an incredible run to extra innings in the Championship. They were the clear cut best Football Team this Spring and then took the #1 seed to 10 innings in the final Game. This one will stay with them for a bit but they know how close they were and this will motivate them come next Fall. These guys have a Championship in their future.  Congrats on a great run and have a great summer. Thanks for playing!

For the Champs, Team Rosen – this will be one of the more memorable Championship Wins in recent memory. These guys pitched a 10-inning shutout in the Championship. Just amazing. Their cool heads can be attributed to Pitcher and Captain Brian Rosen who really helped set the tempo for them defensively in Softball. Just an incredible Game that caps an amazing season for the first ever Austin Football/Softball League Champs! Congrats to Team Rosen!  Can’t wait for them to be able to defend their Crown next year. Thanks for playing!

That ends what was was an amazing 2016-17 stretch in Austin, our first full year.. We can’t wait for what the future holds. Thanks again for playing!
