Playoff Review

The Playoffs began (finally) on Wednesday Nov. 8.  Two Opening Round battles between 4 DTD squads to earn 2 spots in the Elite8. The #10 DTD SRs would defeated the #7 DTD JRs and earn a match-up with #2 AEPi SO/JR. #6  Team Delts defeated #11 DTD SO – to give the older-classmen a second opening round win for the Delts’ squads. With the Win they’d go on to face #3 Team ZBT SR on Championship Monday.. As for #10 DTD SR – their celebration was shortly lived – as they would take on #2 AEPi SR who scored 16 runs in that Elite8 contest to move on to Championship Monday.

On that night we also saw #1 ATO defeat #8 Sammy to earn their spot in the Final4.  They used their great Offense to power the Win. Unfortunately, due to scheduling of iCore exams – that would be the last we saw of the ATO squad this Fall. They were unable to participate in the Final4 and definitely felt like uncrowned Champs. With their exit, it was a wide open race to the Crown!

When all was said and done – as we entered Championship Monday – 5 Teams remained eligible for the Crown. They were seeded #2-6 (as #1 ATO had to bow out)… To start things out on Championship Monday we had our last two Elite8 Games.. #5 AEPi SR came from behind in EXTRA INNINGS to earn a shocking W over #4 Phi Psi. This Game was truly one of the highlights of the entire Season. The last innings were truly nail-biting. With #1 ATO self-eliminating themselves, #5 AEPi SR actually qualified for the Championship Game with this Win and awaited the other side of the bracket to play out.. On the other sdie of the Bracket we already knew that #2 AEPi SO/JR was in the Final4 and they were waiting for the Winner of the #3 ZBT SR and #6 Delts Game.

#3 ZBT SR got off to an early start against #6 Delts and eventually built the lead up to 10-0 and got the Win.. So the stage was set for #2 AEPi SO/JR v. #3 ZBT SR in the Final4 with the Winners taking on #5 AEPi SR for the Championship. Would it be an all AEPi Final or would two Senior squads battle it out in their final Game as a softball Team? This Final4 Game was an instant classic! Both Teams came up with big plays at the plate and in the field. Each half inning came with ups and downs.. When the final out was recorded.. It was #3 Team ZBT SR holding on for the 7-6 Win over the favored #2 AEPi SO/JR.

…and then there were two.. #3 ZBT SR and #5 AEPi SR.  Both Teams were riding waves of emotions and momentum following what were special Wins in the Semis just to get to the Championship Game. Captains Zach Lehrer and Taylor Smetana both were bringing forth squads that could taste the Crown.. Only one club could claim it though.  The Game went back and forth, similarly to the Final4 contests they had won. AEPi SR had relied on a few big hits to drive in most of their runs while ZBT SR was able to get a few runs here and there from timely hits.. We came into the bottom of the 7th with AEPi SR up a run and trying to hold on for the 7-6 W. They would get to 2 outs but ZBT SR would not die.. The bases would get loaded and they’d drive in the Game-tying run! It was 7-7 but ZBT SR did not want to let it get to extra innings and they got the biggest hit of the Season to Win the Championship 8-7!

It was truly an amazing final night for the first season of 16″ Softball in Bloomington. We’re very excited for what is to come and want to Thank everyone once again for playing this Fall. Congrats one final time to the Champs #3 Team ZBT SR. Good Luck on finals everyone!
