Co-Ed Championship Review

1. Team GPhi/Sammy’s (popchips) v. 3. Team Alpha Phi/ZBT (Biaggi’s)

We knew that heading into the League’s final night that we were going to Crown new Champs of the Co-Ed League.. #3 Alpha Phi/ZBT secured that as they ousted 2016 Champs Tri-Delt/SAE in Final4 Kickball the week prior.. These two Teams knew each other very well and everyone figured we were in store for a close Game. As the Championship got underway – both Teams were able to move the ball.. The Offenses were really clicking — Alpha Phi/ZBT QB Jake Prizant threw 4 TDs in this one including scores to Captain Jay Lehrman and Coco Bergdoll. As for Sammy’s/Gphi – QB Andrew Ferdman also had 4 tuddys.. 2 of which went to Ryan Mass. Both Brett Werner and Kim Gershkovich found the endzone as well. When all was said and done it was the #1 overall seed – Team Gphi/Sammy’s who secured the 34-27 Win and the Crown!

For Alpha Phi/ZBT – it will be tough to get over getting so close yet again, as they are the Runners-Up for the second straight year. However, they can look back and know that they got some revenge in the Final4 over Tri-Delt/SAE and they’ll be remembered for getting to the first two Champaign Co-Ed League Championship Games in history. They’ll have to re-tool some for next year with some Players graduating in the Spring but hopefully we’ll see them next year.. Thanks for playing!

To the Champs Team Gphi/Sammy’s, what a season! They clinched the #1 overall seed and then took care of business when the bright lights of the Playoffs were on. It has been a long road for the guys of Sammy’s who are playing in their 3rd Fall season down in Champaign.. They have gotten close before and finally for the first time they have reached the Crown! Congrats to both Sammy’s and Gphi on the Championship! Thanks for playing!

Men’s Championship Wednesday Review

Men’s Final4:  1. Team Sammy’s 18s (StudentCity) v. 4. Team AKL (Spikeball)

Most of #1 Team Sammy’s 18s was fresh off of just winning the Co-Ed League Crown and they’d have to remove themselves from the celebratory mode here and get right back to business with #4 AKL. The Winner would move on to the Championship. AKL was looking for their first appearance while #1 Sammy’s 18s was trying to avenge their Championship Game Loss from 2016.  Team Sammy’s 18s earned their #1 seed for a reason and they got off to a great start here. QB Andrew Ferdman tossed 4 TDs to 4 different receivers in this one including Captain Ryan Mass.  Jack McClellan would pick one off and take it to the house for AKL, but it was just not enough as their Offense couldn’t get going.. Team Sammy’s 18s was going back to the Men’s League Championship Game!

For AKL, it was another great season in Champaign. They got to the Final4 in 2017 – something not many houses can say they were able to accomplish. Want to Thank the Seniors for a great run including Captain Dana Torres. We’ll see you in 2018!

Men’s Final4:  2. Team ATO (SLA Insurance Blue) v. 3. Team SigEp (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

#3 SigEp entered this Final4 Game as the 3x Reigning and Defending Champs.. They were trying to get to a record-setting 4th straight Championship Game.. Standing in their way was #2 ATO, who had title aspirations of their own.. ATO had been to the Championship before but has never held the Crown in Champaign.. Even though they were the higher-seed, any Team playing SigEp in the Champaign Playoffs would serve as underdogs.. Team ATO was trying to do something no group had done in 4 years.. Oust SigEo.

Flat out – this was a great Game. When the final whistle sounded it was ATO who was standing tall! They won a Defensive battle 18-13 and were headed to the Championship Game to take on #1 Team Sammy’s 18s! For SigEp.. This group will go down as the most successful group in Champaign League history. Their 3peat from 2014-16 is likely to never be matched and their Dynasty will forever be cemented. Thank you for a great run and for giving every other Franchise in the League someone to aim for. Thanks for playing!

Men’s Championship: 1. Team Sammy’s 18s (StudentCity) v. 2. Team ATO (SLA Insurance Blue)

…and then there were 2.. For the first time in 4 years – we were guaranteed to have NEW Champs in the Men’s League. Both groups had fallen to SigEp in Championship Games and this was finally their chance to break through… Sammy’s 18s still has their OT Loss from 2016 fresh in their minds and were one more Win away from erasing that.. For ATO, they had just defeated the Dynasty SigEp, but their night was not over.. Only one group could leave as Champs…

As has often been the case in the Men’s League Championship Games over the years.. This one was going to go down to the wire.. Team Sammy’s 18s had the lead in the 2nd half but ATO managed to stage a come back late. Andrew Ferdman had 24 points (including a buzzer beater from mid court at the half) and Peter Tate had 13. to lead Sammy’s. Brent Gasparich had 23 while Chris Klos added 18 for Team ATO. When regulation ended.. The Teams were knotted up and we’d need OVERTIME for the 2nd straight year to decide the Champs! In OT, it was all ATO who got the momentum and stepped on the gas to close out the Championship Game 68-61 and win the Crown! More on them in just a bit..

For Team Sammy’s 18s.. It marks the 2nd straight season that they fell in Overtime of the Championship Game. It doesn’t get much harder than that and in their final season.. There is a lot to be excited about for this group though.. Many of them, earlier in the night, did Win the Co-Ed League Crown. They also leave as one of the most decorated Teams in Champaign League history.. They finished first in the Regular Season in 2015 and 2017 and were Runners-Up in 2016 and 2017. That is 3 years of sustained success. These guys will now transition to the Chicago Leagues where their pursuit of a Men’s League Crown will continue. Their core of Captain Ryan Mass, Justin Gerszonovicz, Ziggy Levin, Andrew Ferdman, the injured Tommy Sutker, and others will be primed for a great run when they wrap up school. Thanks for playing!

Now for the Champs – Team ATO – What. A. Final. Night!  They first defeated SigEp – the first time that has happened in the Playoffs in FOUR Years. Minutes later they took the court against #1 Team Sammy’s 18s and were able to outlast them in Overtime to claim the 2017 Crown.. Captain Bobby Dunn and Co. had a really fantastic season and from start to finish they seemed determined to be the last Team standing this Fall. They become just the 3rd house in the 5 year history of the League to Win it all. Congrats on the Win and thanks for playing!

That’s it for our Season in Champaign. Good Luck to everyone on finals and thanks again for playing! We’ll see you next year, if not before, in Chicago!
