Championship Sunday Review

ELIM. GAME: 1. Team Maione (Chipotle) v. 6. Team Massel (popchips)

Neither Team wanted to be in this spot.. Both had entered the previous Sunday with no Losses to their name and hopes of getting to the Championship Game in the driver’s seat.. #1 Team Maione was stunned by #4 Team Rhum last weekend but bounced right back to defeat #3 Team Kaufman to stay alive. Team Massel fell to their nemesis #2 Team Holzman last week before picking up the Win against #10 Team Golembo to make it to Championship Sunday. They enter here with just 4 Teams left. The Winner here will take on #4 Team Rhum and try to earn the final spot in the Championship.

Simply put – #6 Team Massel dominated this one. Their bats could not be stopped. Brian Levitas, Brett Weiss, Jordan Schwartz and Sam Mendelson all had huge days at the plate here. They totaled 24 Runs to defeat the #1 seed 24-6. On to #4 Team Rhum they would go.

For Team Maione – it was an incredible run in the Regular Season. 11-0. Can’t take that away from them. They will leave the season thinking “What happened?” though as they struggled to Win Games when it mattered most. They will instantly be a favorite once again with the power in their line-up next summer. They don’t need to make any changes, just need to play better to close out the campaign. Thanks for playing!

SEMIS: 4. Team Rhum (cea Study Abroad) v. 6. Team Massel (popchips)

#4 Team Rhum comes into the Semi-Finals off of a Loss to #2 Team Holzman last Sunday. They defeated #1 Team Maione in order to get to that spot though – easily their biggest W of the Summer – as Team Maione was undefeated before that.  #6 Team Massel was also fresh off of a Win over Team Maione. The stakes don’t get much higher than this one here — Winner goes to the Championship and would need to try and defeat Defending Champs and #2 seeded Team Holzman once they get there.

These Teams would go back and forth with both groups making big-time plays. Brian Levitas went deep for Team Massel and he along with Jordan Schwartz would reach base in all 4 of their plate-apperances in this one. Team Rhum needed some Offense to keep pace and they definitely got some – Captain Adam Rhum would drive in 4 in this one while Alec Wise, Scott Lakin and Andrew Picchietti each drove in two. When the dust settled it was Team Rhum moving on with the 13-10 Win! They’d try and get some redemption against #2 Team Holzman in the Championship!

For Team Massel, they had another great Season. They finished 2nd last year and 3rd this year in a much more competitive League. They lost their Captain mid-way through the Season and in most cases that spells trouble for the squad, but Brian Zohn helped keep these guys ready to go and for the second straight year they were among the League’s elite. This group will be back again in 2018 and they are one of the favorites to finally hold the gold. Thanks for playing!

CHAMP.: 2. Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley) v. 4. Team Rhum (cea Study Abroad)

So the stage was set. Defending Champs #2 Team Holzman was waiting in the Championship Game and a Rematch from last week was set with #4 Team Rhum who defeated #6 Team Massel in the Semis just minutes before.. Team Holzman just needed 1 more Win.. Team Rhum would need 2 Wins in a row to hoist the Crown.

These Teams were obviously familiar with one another and it was going to be a battle until the end.. The ball was flying out in this one.. Scott Lakin and Zack Pearlstein would hit bombs for Team Rhum who would take the lead after a huge frame in the middle of the Game. Anthony Maione and Phil Silverman would counter with HRs of their own for Team Holzman. Team Rhum would eventually work up to an 11-8 lead heading into the Bottom of the 7th. We were 3 outs away from forcing a Winner-take-all Championship Game.. However, the Defending Champs were ready to concede Game 1 just yet.. The middle of their line-up which has been so clutch throughout the run started hitting.. Brett Greenspan, Alex Parmacek, Anthony Maione, Danny Goldin.. One by one these guys would reach. They’d eventually tie it up and had the bases-loaded with just one out away. Michael Maione would send one deep into left-center and it was caught but it would allow Alex Parmacek to easily tag-up from 3rd and give Team Holzman their second straight Chicago 16″ League Championship! More on the Champs in just a bit..

For the Runners-Up, Team Rhum, they had a fantastic Playoff-run here. They just couldn’t get past the Back2Back Champs Team Holzman. They finished with 2 guys in the Top-10 for batting this season – Captain Adam Rhum and Zack Pearlstein both had phenomenal years. Andy Pollack and Scott Lakin finished just outside of that as well. These guys need nothing new a year from now.. This roster can win with exactly the same group and just need to get an extra bounce or two take home the Crown. Congrats on a great year and thanks for playing!

Now to the reigning 2x Champs – Team Holzman – what a Summer. These guys battled through a Regular Season with a ton of competition to take the #2 seed and then when unbeaten in the Playoffs. They won 6-straight Games en route to the Crown (dating back to the Regular Season).  Alex Parmacek finished the season with the most times on-base in the entire League (40 of 52). Anthony Maione, Danny Goldin and Sammy Rosenblum all finished right around the Top-10 mark for that as well. Captain Andrew was a great stabilizing presence on the mound in the final Sundays of the League too. This was a complete Team effort. Their Offense just puts pressure on the opposition from top to bottom and they showed yet again why they are the best 16″ Team around.  They now will set their sights on 2018 and an All Sports Series 3peat that very few Teams have ever done – in fact, it has never been done in the 8-years of All Sports Series Leagues in Chicago.  History in the making? Congrats again!

Thanks to everyone for a great season and we look forward to getting it started once again next May!
