Playoff Review

1. Team Maione (Chipotle) v. 4. Team Rhum (cea Study Abroad)

This was essentially a quarter-final Game with two of the Top-4 Teams in the League just 3 Wins away (if consecutive) from the Crown.  Team Maione entered the Game, still Undefeated on the Summer. They had bashed their way into the top seed behind their powerhouse middle of the order.. Captain Frank, Austin Natkin and Cody Pantle all were among the League Leaders in HRs this Season… Team Rhum on the other hand usually relied on their Defense and speed on the base-paths to earn their Wins. These Teams met in the Regular Season finale and it was a 15-14 instant classic with Team Maione winding up on top..  As this Game got going, Team Rhum broke out to a big lead. Zack Pearlstein hit a bomb in this one for Team Rhum. Team Maione would enter the final frame trailing by 4 runs and staring their first L of the season in the face. They’d score 2 in that bottom frame as Tyler Max re-emerged. Captain Frank would hit 3 Homers in this Game but no runners were on-base..  They’d come up short and it was #4 Team Rhum pulling the stunner! Team Maione would have to go right into Elimination Game territory and face off with #3 Team Kaufman.

ELIM. GAME: 1. Team Maione (Chipotle) v. 3. Team Kaufman (SLA Insurance)

#1 Team Maione had just minutes to shake-off their first Loss of the season and #3 Team Kaufman was waiting for them.. The Winners here would advance to Championship Sunday, while the Losers would go home in 5th place.  Team Kaufman would strike first. It was the bottom of the order that got it going. Mike Albert was perfect at the plate and Danny Kahan knocked in 2.  Team Maione was facing an uphill battle for the second straight Game. The long-ball was Team Maione’s bread and butter all season long and they would once again utilize it here to get back into it and eventually snag the lead. Tyler Max, Austin Natkin and Captain Frank Maione all went yard in this one.. Tyler Max’s HR was the exclamation point on their biggest W of the Season!  Team Maione advances to Championship Sunday where they will need 4 straight Wins to earn the Crown. They can do it.

As for Team Kaufman, Captain Zach and co. had a fantastic Summer. They finished with the #3 seed in the Regular Season and then finished 5th in the Double Elim. tourney — not too shabby for their first ride in an All Sports Series softball League. They are one more bat away from being front-runners in 2018. You will see many of these guys re-convene shortly as Team Kaplan in the Fall Thursday Hoops League.  Thanks for playing!

6. Team Massel (popchips) v. 2. Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley)

Both Teams were guaranteed a spot in Championship Sunday.. Team Rhum awaited the Winner of this one in what would basically be the Semis.  The stakes here were extremely high. Something both of these Teams are familiar with — these two clubs met in the Championship Game a year ago after all. The Loser would drop into Elimination Game territory where they’ll take on #1 Team Maione to start the day.. It’s a huge difference.. Brian Levitas and Brett Weiss both went deep for Team Massel in this one but it was just not enough to keep up with the onslaught that Defending Champs Team Holzman was bringing at the plate. The 2016 Champs would score 19 runs on their way to victory here. Thanks in large part to Alex Parmacek who hit 3 Home Runs and drove in 7 Runs.  His Game here was the most impressive thing on Sunday, without a doubt.  #2 Team Holzman would move on to face #4 Team Rhum and #6 Team Massel will take on #1 Team Maione in an Elimination Game to begin Championship Sunday.

4. Team Rhum (cea Study Abroad) v. 2. Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley)

Winner here goes to the Championship.  While the Loser will take on the Winner of Maione/Massel AND if they get through that Game, have to beat the Winner of this Game, two straight times for the Crown. The Win here significantly increases odds for Winning the Crown.  This one was huge and both Teams knew it.  Team Holzman was super hot coming into this Game, having just racked up 19 runs in the previous Game. Captain Andrew Holzman was dishing from the mound and the brothers Maione – Anthony and Mike – had themselves a Game in this one.. Team Rhum just didn’t have it and all the momentum they had from the earlier part of the day had been squashed by this time.. Team Holzman would win it by a slaughter. It was not without some lumps though as Sammy Rosenblum who hustled around 3rd to score the Game-ending run hurt his ankle on the play.. Hopefully they can get him back for the Championship Game. So for the 2nd straight year – Team Holzman will be in the Championship Game.. Whoever makes it out of Massel/Maione v. Rhum will have to beat them 2x in a row.. Have to love the odds Team Holzman now has for a Repeat!

That’s it for this Week. Good Luck to the Final4 Teams and hope to see some of you at the Derby!
