2017 Chicago 16″ Softball – Week 2 (June 4)

By
Updated: June 9, 2017

We were FINALLY able to get in the 2nd week of Games on Sunday afternoon. Between Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the unfortunate weather in between, it seems as if we have been off forever.. In reality it was a close to month between Weeks 1 and 2 but we should be able to start getting into a nice rhythm moving forward here.. The Main Event of Week 2 was Team Massel avenging (slightly) their Championship Game Loss from last season and defeating Defending Champs Team Holzman. We also saw Team Maione sweep a Double Header to jump up to 3-0 in the Standings and sit alone at the top (for at least a week).. All of this and more in the Rankings below!

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-8 with the UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. You can also count on a Link to the Weekly Highlight Video (<– Click right there!)   Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Go to Sport Specific Leagues > Chicago 16″ League.. Power Rankings

1. Team Massel (popchips) – 2-0

As mentioned at the top, Team Massel was able to get a big-time W on Sunday afternoon and have earned their place atop the Power Rankings. Before we get any further, we need to tip our cap to Captain Landon Massel who has moved to Miami in the long layover between Weeks 1 and 2. We wish him all the best! In his absence, his Team played well against the Defending Champs and eeked out a 5-4 W. Brian Levitas and Jason Wenk had key at-bats in this one.  These guys looked determined to go the whole way this year. They take on Teams Kramer and Colmery next Sunday in their Double Header day.

2. Team Maione (Chipotle) – 3-0

Team Maione comes in at #2 in the Power Rankings but they are all alone atop the Standings where it really matters in the long run.. They swept a double-dip on Sunday, taking Games from Teams Kaufman and Golembo. The Clinchers were flying off their bats on Sunday as they combined for 29 runs in their two Games. Both Austin Natkin and for the second-straight week, Frank Maione, went yard on the day. These guys have more pop in their line-up than any other Team in the League and you have to really pitch well to keep their Offense off the base-paths. They take on Team Sharrin next Sunday.

3. Team Holzman (Chicago Trolley) – 1-1

The Defending Champs dropped the Championship Rematch 5-4 to new #1 Team Massel on Sunday afternoon. They had been on a crazy run dating back to last season, don’t sound the alarms just because they dropped a Game this early in the season. They are still the odds-on-favorites.. So sliding down a couple of spots really doesn’t mean anything.. The Game on Sunday might have meant a bit more to Team Massel (as we often see with the Championship Rematches). They will be just fine. Anthony Maione had a very nice debut to the season in this one. They play Team Golembo on Sunday.

4. Team Holstein (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Purple) – 2-0

Exiting the second set of Games for the Season, there are just 3 Teams that are unbeaten.. Team Holstein comes in at #4 this week and they are flying under the radar a bit, but that is likely going to change soon. They won a slugfest with Team Shapiro on Sunday by a score of 13-10. Trevor Biebrach and David Zoberman have been great at the plate to start the Campaign and a lot of this Roster is just getting to know one another, which is a scary thing, as they will only improve when chemistry grows.. They take on Team Colmery next week.

5. Team Loewenstein (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Gold) – 1-1

Team Lowenstein has started the season with two consecutive extra inning affairs.. They came out on the right side of it in Week 2 as they defeated Team Golembo in the extra frame. Judd Barron had 5 hits in the thriller on Sunday. While they would surely have liked to pick up an easy win or two to start the season these nail-biters are great prep for what they hope will be a long Playoff run come the end of the Summer. These guys are actually off on June 11, and then the 18th as well for Father’s Day, before returning on the 25th against new #1 Team Massel in what should be a really fun Game.

6. Team Rhum (cea Study Abroad) – 1-1

Picking up their first W of the Season on Sunday was Team Rhum.  They defeated a good Team Kramer squad (and hopped them in the Rankings as a result). Captain Adam had 3 hits and Alec Wise made his 1 hit meaningful, as he drove in 2 runs with it. Zack Pearlstein went 3 for 4 on the day too.  These guys can hit up and down the line-up and they are going to be fun to watch as the season gets going. They get Team Sharrin on Sunday.

7. Team Kramer (StudentCity) – 1-1

Team Kramer suffered their first L of the Season at the hands of Team Rhum, who leapfrogged them in the Rankings as a result. They just couldn’t get out of a couple of innings and that was their downfall. This is a stellar squad though and they are going to Win more than they Lose this Summer. Matt Pontarelli went 2 for 3 with a run scored for them. They have a Double Header on Sunday with both #1 Team Massel and Team Shapiro. Should be an interesting week for them.

8. Team Colmery (Biaggi’s Black) – 1-1

They are back .500. Easiest W of the season for them for sure.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Golembo (Schweitzer Title) – 0-2

Team Golembo took the field for the first (and second) time of the Season this past Sunday as they were off during Week 1.. They didn’t see the results they hoped for, as they came across an emerging power in #2 Team Maione and then battled it out into extra innings with #5 Team Loewenstein. They left without a W but you can tell that the rust really fell off somewhere around Game 2 and they are going to be just fine going forward. Expect them to move into the Rankings here soon. They were also without Captain Max who will help right the ship soon. Defending Champs Team Holzman are up next in what has been a very tough early season schedule.

Team Kaufman (Sunset Foods) – 0-2

Team Kaufman left their second Game still searching for their first Win of the season. They fell 10-3 to #2 Team Maione. Jordan Cin went 3 for 3 at the plate and Scott Plotnick had 2 hits while driving in a run. These guys are going to be just fine.  They have a BYE this coming Sunday and then are off with the rest of the League on Father’s Day.. They will return on June 25 where they try to get their first W against Team Golembo.

Team Shapiro (SLA Insurance) – 0-2

Team Shapiro saw a ton of improvement from Week 1 to Week 2. They didn’t come away with the Win but it was a much different Game against Team Holstein than their first Game against Defending Champs Team Holzman.. They once again gave up double digit runs, but this past Game they were able to slug it back out with their opponents, eventually falling 13-10. If they can sure up the Defensive side of the ball they are going to give lots of Teams issues come later in the season. They get Team Kramer next Sunday.

Team Sharrin (Biaggi’s Neon) – 0-1

That’s it for the 2nd Sunday of the Season. See everyone next week!
