Playoff Review

1. Team Stratton (Chicago Trolley) v. 4. Team UM Alumni (Spikeball)

It’s tough to get more of backstory in a Final4 Game than this.  These two Teams met a year ago in the Championship Game. Team Stratton, would of course go on to Win that Game, and complete the perfect season.. Team UM Alumni has been counting down the days to avenge that Loss and this was finally their chance. On this night, we’d take it to the Indoor Soccer arena where only one of these Teams would be able to get to their second consecutive Championship Game..

The UM Alumni squad was able to build up a lead, thanks in large part to Michael Dent and his 4 Goals in the Game. They got the score to 5-1 before the Defending Champs began to mount their comeback.. Team Stratton got the Game to 5-3, but ran out of time and Team UM Alumni would advance to the Championship Game!

For Team Stratton – what a two-year run they have had in All Sports Series. Back to Back #1 seeds. Back to Back Final4s and the 2016 Champs. This is a group that has more or less dominated these past two Summers and while they were unable to get the Repeat, they must be proud of what they have accomplished since June 2016. They will be back and likely hungrier than ever.. They will look to make it 2 Crowns in 3 years in 2018. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Mortier (The Bucket List) v. 6. Team Castriano (SLA Insurance)

While an upset took place in the other Semi-Final, both of these clubs were looking to climb their way into their first Championship Game appearance. Both Teams were strong down the stretch, however both lost in Indoor Soccer this Season and this was anyone’s Game.  It was clear early on that Goals were going to be tough to come by. There were not many clear shooting lanes and both Goalies were on the top of their Games.. People were flying around, certainly giving 100% out there. Tommy Grogan was able to score twice for Team Mortier and Team Castriano was only able to net 1 Goal… #2 Team Mortier was headed to the Championship!

For Team Castriano, what a debut season in the Chicago Summer League. After a couple of weeks in the beginning of the season to get their bearings they really locked in and played great in multiple sports over the past half of the season. They knocked out past Champs Team Wolter in the Elite8 and were a Goal away from making a Championship Game appearance. We hope to see them back soon, thanks for playing!

2. Team Mortier (The Bucket List) v. 4. Team UM Alumni (Spikeball)

Both Final4 victors would head over to the Softball diamond for the Championship battle.. #4 Team UM Alumni fresh off their revenge and de-throning of Defending Champs #1 Team Stratton would take on #2 Team Mortier, who happens to be one of if not the best Softball Team in the League.  7 innings separated both squads from the Crown.

Team Mortier would strike first to grab an early lead, but not an insurmountable one. Both Teams were playing well on Defense. There were several ground balls, which usually manufacture base-runners, but on this night the Defense got force outs on them routinely. Jeffrey Oscar would go deep for Team Mortier and the lead was eventually stretched to 7-2. Mike Dent would hit a solo blast for Team UM Alumni and he made it 7-3 as we headed into the final inning.. Team UM Alumni got a couple baserunners on in the 7th but Team Mortier would clamp down and Captain Emily made the final tag at 2nd base to clinch the Crown!  Team Mortier are the 2017 Champs! More on them in just a bit..

For the Runners-Up Team UM Alumni.. It is the second straight Summer that they have reached the Championship Game but will leave still searching for their first Crown. They had a gigantic W in the Final4 though – handing Team Stratton their first ever Playoff Loss. These guys are among the elite and will once again be among the favorites for the Crown in 2018, where maybe the 3rd time to the Championship can be the charm.. Want to send an early Congratulations to Captain Laura Zeligman on her wedding in a couple of weeks! Thanks again for playing!

Now for the Champs — Team Mortier has been apart of All Sports Series for a LONG time and to see them finally break through and grab the Crown is really great! They had a fantastic season – finishing 2nd in the Regular Season and then defeating 3 Teams in 3 different sports en route to the Championship. This group has the ability to go on a run of Championships should they stay together. Thanks again for playing and Congratulations to 2017 Co-Ed Champs!!

That’s it for another great summer in Chicago. Hope to see everyone again soon!
