Playoff Review

Opening Rd: 8. Team Leiby (Chipotle) v. 9. Team Reef (Fox in a Box)

As mentioned in the Playoff Preview, these Teams battled in an epic Indoor Soccer Game just a couple weeks ago and both were very familiar with each other coming into this Opening Round Match. A spot in the Elite8 was on the line and waiting for them would be #1 seed and Defending Champs Team Stratton.. Team Leiby claimed the first W by a score of 25-17 and then followed up in Game 2 by a score of 25-16 to Win 2-0 and advance to the Elite8!

For Team Reef, they bow out earlier than they had hoped but had a really nice season! They started the season off strong and also was able to pull out that Soccer W that we mentioned earlier. They are a great group and with a couple of bounces this Team could make some serious strides in 2018. We hope to see them back next Summer. Thanks for playing!

Opening Rd: 7. Team Freeosk (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) v. 10. Team Campbell & Co. (Karyn Collection)

In the other Opening Round contest we had Team Freeosk, Captained by Tara Steinbauer facing off with Team Campbell & Co., Captained by Taylor Schmidt. These clubs were looking to earn a spot in the Elite8 and a match-up with #2 seeded Team Mortier. Team Freeosk wasted little time getting the edge here and won 25-11 and 25-10 to clinch their first Playoff W as a unit.

For Team Campbell & Co., they were a really fun group to have play as we love adding new Teams to the fold each Summer. Hopefully we will see them back again in 2018. Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 1. Team Stratton (Chicago Trolley) v. 8. Team Leiby (Chipotle)

So the Rematch was set. Team Leiby took care of business in the Opening Round and we got to see #1 Team Stratton look to avenge their first Head to Head Loss in 2 years (and simultaneously earn a trip back to the Final4) against #8 Team Leiby. For those with short memories.. In the Regular Season finale, Team Leiby squeaked out a 1pt W over Team Stratton to shock everyone heading into the Playoffs.. Could they do it again? Team Stratton would bounce back early and take Game 1 by a score of 25-14. Team Leiby did not plan on going out without a fight.. They would come back and take Game 2 25-23.. Setting up a Winner-take-all Game 3.. Really feeling the threat of Elimination for the first time, Team Stratton showed why they are the Team to Beat.. They won Game 3 in commanding fashion and for the 2nd straight Summer, would be apart of the Final4!

For Team Leiby, they exit earlier than they’d like to but what an end to the season for this first-year unit. They had some All Sports Series vets including Captain Topher Leiby but for the most part, many were playing for the first time — to knock off the Defending Champs at the end of the Season and then come back the week after in the Playoffs and almost do it again, shows just how good this group can be down the road. Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 2. Team Mortier (The Bucket List) v. 7. Team Freeosk (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

With Team Freeosk’s Win in the Opening Round we were setup with a really interesting Elite8 matchup here. Team Mortier was without their best Volleyballer – Mehyar Amani – and Team Freeosk certainly had some momentum heading into this one.. Team Mortier was able to hold them off in Game 1 – winning 26-24 in what was a really great Game.  In Game 2, we had several more fantastic plays and similar to Game 1, Team Mortier pulled out another close W to Win the match 2-0 and punch their Final4 ticket!

For Team Freeosk, they have to be proud of their run to end the Season. They got a Playoff W, which only handful of Teams can say and they played very well down the stretch of the Regular Season. This is a group that could be right in the mix to win the whole thing in 2018 if they stay together. Hopefully they will. Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 3. Team Wolter (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 6. Team Castriano (SLA Insurance)

This one had all the makings of a really great Playoff matchup. As mentioned in the Preview – Team Wolter are the 2015 Champs.  They came into the Playoffs as the #3 seed and look to get back to the Crown.. Enter, Team Castriano as a streaking #6 seed who is entering their first set of Playoffs as a unit in All Sports Series.  They have been playing really well lately.. In Game 1, Team Castriano continued their strong play and won.  Little changed in Game 2 and just like that they pulled off the 2-0 Upset, and to the Final4 they would go!

For Team Wolter, it was an unsatisfying end to what was a really strong Summer. The League was full of talented rosters this year and they finished #3 after the Regular Season. Aside from Team Stratton, no one has had more success in the Co-Ed Leagues than them since 2015. These guys will be back and once again favorites for the title next year! Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 4. Team UM Alumni (Spikeball) v. 5. Team Gordon (Sandusky Lee)

We mentioned this last week in the Playoff Preview – both Teams were evenly matched headed into this one and this had a chance to be one of, if not THE, Match of the Night. Only one Team could move on and play #1 Team Stratton in the Final4 next week.. As we expected this one came down to the wire.. Team Gordon took Game 1 and Team UM Alumni fired right back Winning Game 2 and we were set for a Winner-Take-All Game 3. Team UM Alumni had grabbed momentum toward the end of Game 2 and used that to leapfrog out to a lead in Game 3.. Team Gordon didn’t have enough to come back and it was Team UM Alumni advancing to the Final4 for the 2nd straight Summer! We will now get a Rematch of last year’s Championship Game between them and Team Stratton.. Team UM Alumni have been waiting a year for their revenge!

For Team Gordon, they exit before they would have liked to but they had a great season. Despite having a number of All Sports Series’ vets on the roster this group was playing together for the first time and really had a fantastic season. They finished in the top half during the Regular Season of what was a really competitive co-ed league. They should be proud of their run! Thanks for playing!

That’s it for Week 1 of the Playoffs. Thanks again to those who finished up the Season and Good Luck to our Final4 next week!
