SEMI-FINAL

1. Team Dorfman   v. 5. Team Berzon

This was a Rematch from the first weekend of Playoffs a few Sundays back.. Team Berzon on that day got hot and knocked off both Team Kotvis and then went on to stun the #1 seeded Team Dorfman.. Team Dorfman had been looking for some revenge and this was the perfect opportunity.. They also were looking to get back to the Championship for the 2nd straight season.. Team Berzon was looking to crash the party as the #5 seed…

Game 1 would go to Team Dorfman 25-20.. For Team Berzon, they were facing elimination for the first time this season and with their backs against the wall they rallied to take Game 2 by a score of 25-22.. So that set-up a Winner-take-all Game 3. Team Dorfman would go on to Win a very competitive Game 3 – 25-21 – and secured their spot in the Championship!

For Team Berzon, they fought valiantly all season and especially in the Playoffs. Many of this crew are vets of All Sports Series and it was great to see them make a great run here. They finish 3rd with their lone Playoff Losses coming to the top-2 Teams in the League. They should be proud of their run. Thanks for playing!

CHAMPIONSHIP

2. Team Bohrer v. 1. Team Dorfman

Now time for the Main Event… Team Bohrer awaited in the Championship with no Playoff Losses.. Team Dorfman entered fresh off their big 3-Game W over Team Berzon in the Semis. The stage was set for a big-time Championship Battle between the top-2 seeds.. Team Bohrer just needed to win 1 match while Team Dorfman would need to defeat Team Bohrer in 2-straight matches to Win the whole thing.. These two clubs split their two previous meetings and we knew we would be in store for some quality Volleyball to finish off the season!

In the first Championship Match, Game 1 was a highlight – it went down to the wire.. Team Dorfman would end up pulling out the 25-23 W in Game 1.  Team Bohrer feeling the Playoff pressure for the first time really, knew they needed an answer.. That is exactly what they got in Game 2 as they tied the match at a Game a piece. They won 25-16, in what was the biggest margin of victory of the entire day.. In Game 3 — we knew we’d either have a Champion or a 2nd Championship Match at the outset.. #1 seeded Team Dorfman dug down deep and played on of their best Games of the Season.. They’d Win that won 25-18 to take Championship Match 1 and force a final Championship set.

In the all deciding Match 2.. Team Dorfman had some real momentum after winning 2-straight matches and had now put a seed of doubt into #2 Team Bohrer. However, they also were coming off 6 do-or-die volleyball Games and stamina was going to really come into play.. #1 Team Dorfman went on to Win Game 1 by a score of 25-23 (identical to the first match).. For the first time all season, Team Bohrer now had their backs up against the wall, on the brink of Elimination.. It had taken all this time but Team Dorfman was finally playing with the upper-hand. In Game 2, there were a few runs.. At the end of it, Team Dorfman finished off what was one of the more incredible team-performances you will see in All Sports Series.. They had defeated Team Bohrer in Game 2 and won their 3rd straight match of the day to clinch the Crown! More on the Champs in just a bit..

For Team Bohrer, they will undoubtedly leave heart-broken.. They came into Championship Sunday as the favorites.. Sitting 1 Win away from the Crown. It was just not meant to be. They should be proud that they were able to find themselves in that position in the first place. They were viewed as a top team from start to finish this season and that is a very hard feat, especially for a group making their debut in the League. They were a pleasure to have in the League and they could be the favorites when we come back next Spring to win the whole thing. Thanks for playing and hopefully see you back soon.

Now back to the 2017 Chicago Co-Ed Champs – Team Dorfman!  What. A. Run.  They needed 8 Games in total to win their 3 matches on Sunday.. They went 6-2 over that stretch, and somehow seemed to get stronger as the day went on.  The Dorfman/Hokin/Peer core that has been the base of this Team for 2 years now, waited a long time to get back to the Championship Game after a heartbreaking defeat a year ago.. This one had to feel extra special for them. Their roster additions this season – Jono Matasar, Ruthie Johnson and Allison Mazurek were exactly the upgrades they needed and played so well down the stretch. This was a true Team W. Need to touch on Captain Daniel Dorfman before we wrap-up.. This guy was the Captain of the very first All Sports Series League Champions all the way back in the Summer of 2010.  He was the Founding Father of what has become the most successful string of Franchises in all of All Sports Series.  He doesn’t often get the credit he deserves and this one on Sunday will go along way in reminding people.. He also helped engineer this final day just hours after getting back from a weekend in Boston watching the Cubs.. There is no stopping Daniel Dorfman!  Congrats again to the Champs!

That’s it for the Volleyball League! Hopefully see everyone again this summer and if not, we’ll be back next Spring with more Volleyball. Thanks for playing!
