Championship Thursday Review

1. Team Kugler (Schweitzer Title) v. 4. Team Apuli (Hakimian Imports)

Team Kugler entered the Playoffs here as the Undefeated #1 seed and had their sights set on getting 2 more Wins en route to the title. Team Apuli who would be no easy opponent though – all of them past All Sports Series champs in their own right.. Something had to give here.. The Teams would go back and forth. QB Andy Cohen would hit both Captain Justin Apuli and Jacob Hurwith, who made an amazing grab to hold on, for Touchdowns.  On the other side –  Anthony Kopp threw a TD and Ryan Kaltenmark ran for one.. In the end, both teams scored twice, and the difference was that Team Apuli was able to convert on one of their point-after-attempts and they would pull the upset 13-12 to go to the Championship Game!

For Team Kugler, of course it is a disappointing end to the Season and they’ll leave with a bad taste in their mouths.. However, they really should be proud of what they accomplished this Fall.. So few Teams can run the gauntlet and go undefeated during a Regular Season. They will be contenders for seasons to come.. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Tickman (Chicago Trolley) v. 6. Team Jimenez (Karyn Collection)

These two Teams met in Week 6 – just as Team Jimenez was flipping the on switch for their Playoff run, as we have seen them do every season.. Team Jimenez got the Win on that night, but #2 Team Tickman still entered this Final4 contest with confidence against the Defending Champs.  This one turned out to be one-sided as the 2x Defending Champs were on a mission to get to their 3rd straight Championship Game appearance. Captain Alex Jimenez and co. were great on Offense and put the pressure on Team Tickman with early scores. They won by a final of 21-0.

For Team Tickman – a trip to the Final4 and the #2 seed in the Playoffs are nothing to be upset about. It was a great first season in the Chicago Flag Football scene and if they stay together as a unit they have Championship gold in their future for sure. Thanks for playing!

4. Team Apuli (Hakimian Imports) v. 6. Team Jimenez (Karyn Collection)

So the stage was set for two Rivals to clash once again and this time with the Championship on the line.. Over the course of the past 12 months – they’ve met more than a handful of times and they have split the wins but Team Jimenez owns 2 Final4 victories over Team Apuli – knocking them out in each of the past two Leagues. Team Apuli could not wait to try and exact some revenge.

There was no feeling out period necessary here – both groups knew the other’s strengths. QB Andy Cohen got Team Apuli on the board first with a pass to Jake Miller in the end zone. They’d go up 6-0. Team Jimenez answered with a strike from Captain and QB Alex to Nick Nolan, they’d tack on the extra point and go up 7-6. Andy Cohen ran one in on his feet. Team Apuli went up 12-7.  Then, Alex Jimenez hit Francisco Castelan for not one, but two scores.. Team Jimenez would get the PAT each time.. Thus making the score 21-12. Team Apuli added a late score with a grab from Jacob Hurwith, the score would move to 21-18 but that is where the clock would run out and Team Jimenez would claim their 3rd straight Chicago Flag Football Crown! More on the Champs in just a bit..

For Team Apuli – it is another heartbreaking end to a Flag Football season for this veteran crew. They were a play or two away here from taking the whole thing.. It was still a very successful 2017 for this bunch. Just about every member of the roster won a Championship in some regard during this calendar year.. The 2017 Floor Hockey Champs – Team Harris, the 2017 Chicago Men’s All Sports Champs – Team Apuli and the 2016-17 Hoops League Champs – Team Lalez. These guys will be back sooner than later, thanks for playing!

Now to the 3-time Champs Team Jimenez.. There’s not much more that can be said that has not already been said.. They can now throw their names onto the shortlist of groups that have 3peats in All Sports Series. The core here should be extremely proud of themselves. They have now won 9 straight Playoff Games spanning over those 3 Leagues. That is incredible. Congrats again! Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the Season. Thanks again to everyone and see you soon!
