Championship Thursday Review

Final4: 1. Team Aranas (it doesn’t matter) v. 5. Team Bernstein (Mezes)

Team Aranas came into the Final4 as the favorite following a fantastic Regular Season.  Of the 4 Teams entering the last night, #5 Team Bernstein was definitely the one wearing Cinderella’s slipper.. They struggled early on in the season before really turning it on late and got a huge Elite8 W against Team Wells to earn their spot in this Game.  For most of the first half it was close in this one. Team Aranas was able to build a lead but it was not a blowout by any stretch. Then Calvin Kang decided it was going to be.. He finished with 39 points for Team Aranas to lead all scorers on the night. They would end up locking in their spot in the Championship by a score of 77-55.

As for Team Bernstein – it was an impressive final month in their first run in the Chicago Hoops League scene. Many of these guys cut their teeth in All Sports Series playing in the Bloomington, IN Campus Leagues and they certainly showed a lot in their debut season in the big city.. We hope to see them again soon. Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 2. Team Weisberg (The Bucket List) v. 3. Team Unger (SLA Insurance)

With #1 Team Aranas waiting in the Championship – both #2 Team Weisberg and #3 Team Unger were ready to lace ’em up for the right to take that final spot in the ‘ship. These two Teams met all the way back in Week 1 when Team Weisberg won 100-66 – in what was the worst night of the Season for Team Unger. Both Teams have really flourished this season and each had a realistic shot of winning two Games on this night to take the whole thing..

Luke Jacobson scored 20 for Team Weisberg and Jake Lerman added 17. For Team Unger – Ryan Lederman and Judd Barron led with 17 and 14, respectively. This Game stayed close throughout – most of the time with Team Weisberg leading by a handful or so.. As the second half waged on, Team Weisberg just wouldn’t surrender the lead.. In the closing moments, it was they who were able to shift into a higher gear and they would actually take it by 12 points. #2 Team Weisberg was moving on to play against #1 Team Aranas for the Crown.

For Team Unger – they have participated in 4 Chicago Hoops Leagues this season as a unit and they have made in the Final4 in all but one, including two Championship Game performances. This group is as high-quality as it gets, and while they are still searching for their first crown, they have become a staple of the Chicago Hoops League scene. See you soon and thanks for playing!

Championship: 1. Team Aranas (it doesn’t matter) v. 3. Team Unger (SLA Insurance)

These two Championship-combatants met in Week 6 – and Team Aranas dealt Team Weisberg their only Loss of the Season.. It was the night that Team Aranas pretty much wrapped up the #1 seed and Team Weisberg and certainly been counting down the days to get some revenge.. Both Teams were going to be tired from playing their semi-final previously in the night – so depth was going to be as important as ever in this one.. Differing opinions exist on whether it is better to play two games back to back (like Team Weisberg) or have an hour break (like Team Aranas)… Well Team Weisberg came out hot..

Jake Lerman led the Game with 24 points for Team Weisberg. Calvin Kang had another nice Game with 17 for Team Aranas but the Offense just didn’t flow through him like it did in their Final4 Game when he had 39. Chad Bruce had 16 and Jon Cieski scored 15 for Team Weisberg here.. This one was not Team Aranas’ best Game and Team Weisberg did not waste taking advantage of it.. Into the second half it was clear – Team Weisberg would win the Crown! More on the Champs momentarily..

For Team Aranas, yes it is a disappointing end to the season, as their lasting memory will be their worst performance of the year.. However, you need to look at the bigger picture. They made it to the Championship and were the #1 overall seed. That is a really nice debut as a unit in All Sports Series. Most Teams would kill for that type of production in year 1.. We hope to see them back here soon, thanks for playing!

Now to the Champs – Team Weisberg! It is their first Championship, in many many years of All Sports Series! They have been perennial favorites but have been searching for their first Crown and have finally done it! They were the best Team all season long and put an exclamation point on it, with the 20+ point Championship victory. These guys have the talent and depth to go on a serious run right now and start shaping what could be the next Chicago Hoops League dynasty… Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the Fall Season. We hope to see you all again after the holidays. Thanks!
