2017 Chicago Fall TUESDAY Hoops Playoffs Week 1 – (Nov. 14)

Updated: November 21, 2017

We saw 8 Teams eliminated on the opening night of the Playoffs and with that we have a much clearer picture on how everything will shake-out for the final Games in both Leagues.. In fact, we are ready to go with the CSSC Championship Game: 2. Team Berry v. 4. Team Trauernicht for the Crown!  They’ll go head to head on Tuesday Night! Then, on the All Sports Series side – just 6 Teams remain and in an extremely rare occurrence – all of the Top-6 seeds are still alive. It was straight chalk on Tuesday Night. We already know that #1 Team Shlofrock and #2 Team Darcy are into the Final4.. Who will claim the final 2 spots? We’ll review all of the Playoff action from last week below.

All Sports Series Playoffs Week 1 Review

Open. Rd.: 8. Team Horwitz (The Bucket List) v. 9. Team Shields (StudentCity)

Winner plays 1. Team Shlofrock (Schweitzer Title)

This ended up being the Game of the Night on the All Sports Series side. These Teams went back and forth for the entire Game. Both Teams had guys making big-time plays over and over again. Sam Neron went for 29 to lead Team Horwitz while Chris McNichols had 17. Captain Connor Shields had 21 and Mack Watts scored 18 for their Team.. Toward the end of the Game Team Horwitz was able to knock down a few shots and grab a 6-8 point lead in what was seemingly a one-possession Game for 40 minutes or so. They’d knock down a few free throws and would advance to the Elite8 for a date with #1 Team Shlofrock!

For Team Shields, this was not the way they saw this season going.. They were plagued by a short-bench for most of the year and lost a few Games that they normally pull out. These guys are as veteran as it comes in All Sports Series and they’ll be back soon. Expect to see them in one of the Winter Leagues in 2018. Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 1. Team Shlofrock (Schweitzer Title) v. 8. Team Horwitz (The Bucket List)

For as good as Team Horwitz looked in Game 1 to earn their spot in this Game, it was really the polar opposite in this one.. They were just gassed. #1 Team Shlofrock did not take pity and pushed the pace. They’d win 97-43 and frankly it could have been worse. Captain Jake scored 25, Jake Lerman had 24 and Jordan Silver had 15 in this one. They’ll ride into the Final4 and actually have a rest-week coming on Nov. 21 before looking to complete the perfect season and win the Crown on Tuesday Nov. 28!

For Team Horwitz, they played what was likely their most complete Game of the Season during the Opening Round. They just dug themselves too big of a hole during the Regular Season and it was going to take something miraculous to beat the Undefeated #1 seed who was fresh, after coming off of another Game. They will be back and if they can get their full roster in tact for the Winter they will once again be among the title favorites. Thanks for playing!

Open. Rd.: 7. Team Cohen (CEA Study Abroad) v. 10. Team Holzman (Biaggi’s Brown)

Winner plays 2. Team Darcy (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.)

We said in last week’s preview that when playing at their best Team Cohen could have been a top seed on Tuesday Nights – well they showed exactly why during this Opening Round contest with Team Holzman. Garrett Staniec had 23. Kyle Daniels had 19. Chris Dunn had 14. Mike Gendell had a dozen. It was a route. They easily moved on to the Elite8 where they’d take on Team Darcy.

For Team Holzman, they really didn’t have a Game like this all season. They were in every Game during the Regular Season and played well down the stretch. They just were over-matched with Team Cohen in the Playoffs. Ben Murnighan, Captain Andrew and Sam Ofman were all in double figures on the night though. These guys will be back in the Winter and likely on Thursday Nights where they could be among the favorites for the Crown!

Elite8: 2. Team Darcy (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) v. 7. Team Cohen (CEA Study Abroad)

We’ve talked about their Resume many times.. Team Darcy has won 2 Championships over the past 3 years in All Sports Series. They have been to 5 straight Final4s. They were looking to make that 6 for 6 here on Tuesday Night against a tired Team Cohen squad that didn’t really take their foot off the gas even though they were up big in the Opening Round over Team Holzman. This was a really good Game. Both Teams showed a lot here. Both Sam Martinez and Dan Turner went for 17 to lead Team Darcy. Kyle Daniels had 21 and Garrett Staniec had 15 for Team Cohen. In the end, Team Darcy do what they do best in All Sports Series – win Playoff Games.. They’d advance for their 6th consecutive Final4 by a score of 75-62 as they just outlasted the tired Team Cohen.

For Team Cohen – they showed a ton on their final night of the Fall. Had they brought all of that during each week of the Regular Season they may have been a top-4 seed and their Playoff journey would have been way different. It would be fun to see this group back, with a season under their belts, in the Winter to see if they can get to the Crown – certainly enough talent! Thanks for playing!

Open. Rd.: 6. Team Chaikin (Biaggi’s Pink) v. 11. Team Kaplan (Danley’s Garage)

We mentioned in last week’s Playoff Preview that Team Chaikin had won the first matchup between these two Teams a few weeks ago by 18.  Team Kaplan knew they were in store for an uphill battle and they really did play well here. All Sports Series vet Zach Aranas went for 30 on the night and Cameron Mitchell had 19 for Team Kaplan. They just couldn’t slow down the potent Chaikin Offense. Ben Simpson had 37 which was the highest score of any Player on Tuesday Night. Joseph Santello had 21 as well. #6 Team Chaikin would get the Win 77-66 and they’d move on to play #3 Team Tucci in the Elite8 on Tues. Nov. 21.

For Team Kaplan – they had a solid run this Fall. There were just so many good Teams and they couldn’t get past a really good one in Team Chaikin in the Opening Round. Most of these guys have played before and they’ll definitely be back in 2018. With an addition or two, they could be title contenders. Thanks for playing!

OFF in Week 1: 3. Team Tucci (Chicago Trolley), 4. Team Knox (Ojibwa), 5. Team Bollier (SLA Insurance)

We mentioned last week – #4 Team Knox and #5 Team Bollier will take part in their Elite8 Game this Tuesday Night (Nov. 21) for a spot in the Final4 and the right to play #1 Team Shlofrock on Championship Tuesday.  As for #3 Team Tucci we now know that they will take on #6 Team Chaikin in the Elite8 on Tuesday Night with the Winners immediately going toe to toe with #2 Team Darcy for a spot in the Championship! Tuesday Night is going to be huge!

CSSC Playoffs Week 1 Review

4. Team Trauernicht (Air Ditka) v. 5. Team Indy (#3)

Winner plays 1. Team Tehensky (Hoop Dreams)

Team Indy had a bad time to be short-handed and Team Trauernicht certainly took advantage.. Josh French had 24 and Jeff Romano scored 13 to lead Team Trauernicht to the Win in this one. Chris Kinnerk scored 19 and Luke Pastina had 14 in their final Game for Team Indy. Team Trauernicht would move on to take on #1 seed Team Tehensky immediately following in the Final4! Thanks to Team Indy for playing this Fall!

1. Team Tehensky (Hoop Dreams) v. 4. Team Trauernicht (Air Ditka)

We knew we were going to be in store for a really good game with this one as both Teams desperately wanted to get into the Championship here. Last week, in the Playoff Preview we talked about how Team Tehensky would need to weather the initial storm from the Winners of the Opening Round Game – as they would be feeling confident.. Well, Team Trauernicht came out firing and built up a nice lead going into halftime. Team Tehensky would give a good fight in the second half to cut into the lead but Team Trauernicht just kept pushing..They eventually would earn their 2nd Win of the Night and advance to the Championship Game!  Josh Downen led them in scoring in this Game with 20. Josh French had another nice Game with 16 and Jeff Romano scored 13 for the second straight Game. Ron Klein had a nice day for Team Tehensky with 29 points – his best night of the year. Captain Mike had 13 as well. Team Tehensky should be proud of themselves, finishing 1st in a very competitive league. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Berry (Littyville Lane) v. 3. Team Eiting (Brick by Brick)

We knew that #4 Team Trauernicht was waiting in the Championship for the Winner of this one. Both Teams gave it their all in this one. They both wanted it badly and were giving it 100% on both ends of the floor. Ned Mandel led Team Berry in scoring with 16 points on the night. Austin Swaney matched with 16 of his own for Team Eiting. This one was a close Game throughout but in the end, Team Berry would make more plays and pull away for the 10 point win. They are headed to the Championship! As for Team Eiting, they had a very nice run this season. We hope to see them back again soon. Thanks for playing!

That’s it for this week. Thanks again for the Teams that finished up on Tuesday Night. Happy Thanksgiving and Good Luck to the Teams competing on Tuesday Night!
