Updated: August 9, 2017

Monday Night we began the Playoffs for the 7th Summer of the Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League.. For the past 3 Summers,#1 seeded Team Zimmerman has made the Championship Game. They are of course the Defending Back2Back Champs as well.. So entering Monday Night with 8 Teams standing, and only 2 Teams surviving, the headlining storyline was of course, whether Team Zimmerman could make it 4-straight trips to the Championship Game.. and if they did, who would their Opponents be?  We’ll get to all of that below in the Playoff Review!

Playoff Review

Opening Rd (Hockey):
7. Team Apuli (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 8. Team Hubner (Biaggi’s)

Getting the Playoffs started in the Chicago Men’s League was #7 Team Apuli, who was entering their 7th Summer in the League and still in pursuit of their first Championship.. Their opponents were #8 Team Hubner who was entering their very first All Sports Series Playoffs.  The sport was Hockey thanks to #2 Team Kornblatt electing that over Hoops for this one.. These two groups met in Week 6 in Hockey and Team Apuli picked up the 7-0 W on that night.  It was much of the same in this one.. Scott Kandelman led Team Apuli with 5 Goals on the night. Captain Tim Hubner and Danny Stiefel would score for Team Hubner in this one but it wasn’t enough.. So it was #7 Team Apuli moving on to the Quarterfinals!

For Team Hubner, they will look back on the season and know they left a lot on the table. They were so close in a ton of Games and had they pulled out a few of those, maybe they would have wound up on the Hoops court or the Softball diamond come Playoff time. This is a group that has a really bright future and it has been a pleasure to have them in the League. Thanks for playing!

Quarters (Hockey):
2. Team Kornblatt (RightFit Personal Training) v. 7. Team Apuli (Rockin’ Refuel)

With #7 Team Apuli defeating #8 Team Hubner in the Opening Round, we got to see a Rivalry renewed with a spot in the Final4 on the line. Team Kornblatt had gone Undefeated in the Regular Season in head to head Games (they got 3rd in Volleyball Tourney) and with their success they got to choose Floor Hockey for this one.. Team Apuli was happy with their selection though and both Teams knew they were in for an absolute fight.

Scott Kandelman who was the hero of their first Game on the Offensive end actually moved between the pipes for this Game as he and Team Kornblatt Goalie Matt Emer would embark on an “anything you can do, I can do better” contest throughout. Both Teams were giving it 100%. Team Apuli was obviously tired from the first Game but they were able to dig deep and match the Team Kornblatt intensity. It seemed like the ball constantly had 6+ people around as it multiple players from both squads would swarm… This was a low scoring Game and the Goalies played very well.. Their Defenses also need to be complimented as shooting lanes were few and far between.. Team Kornblatt would get a goal from Adam Goldberg to strike first in this one but Team Apuli would answer right back and tie it up at 1 very quickly.. Team Apuli kept the momentum getting up 3-1.  Team Kornblatt made it 3-2, but Team Apuli answered making it 4-2. Team Kornblatt scored next and it was 4-3 as we came down the stretch.. Team Apuli got goals from Jason Widen, Alex Dorn, Brent Fallows and Aaron Werner in this one.. Derek Reinglass and Jonathan Weinstein added Goals for Team Kornblatt in this one as well.  The closing minutes of this Game were as intense as any battle we have seen in this League’s 7-year history. All of the Players were laying it all out there.. When the final horn sounded, Team Apuli was able to hold serve and hang on to the 4-3 Win! They got their 2nd Floor Hockey W of the night, but would need 1 more to complete the stunner!

For Team Kornblatt, you can tack this one on to the growing list of Playoff heartbreak. This group has suffered some of the toughest Losses that All Sports Series has ever seen.. This one has a similarity to a year ago when they fell to Team Zimmerman in the same Elite8 round, also on the Floor Hockey court. They have out together several great seasons in a row and while they may not have a decade left in the tank anymore, like when they got started back in 2010, they have been too good lately to end without a Crown. If it is the last time we see this core together, than we have to Thank them as the League was built on their backs.  Something inside just feels like, next year is the year.. We shall see. Thanks for playing!

Quarters (Hoops):
3. Team Dorfman (Hakimian Imports) v. 6. Team Roberson (Fox in a Box)

#3 Team Dorfman has 2 “All Sports” Crowns to their name and Basketball is certainly their preferred arena to play in.. If you can’t tell already, this is a pretty tough assignment for #6 Team Roberson who was getting their first taste of Playoff action as a unit.  Team Dorfman would have 4 guys in double figures including Jake Shlofrock who had 29. Adam Rhum, Andy Cohen and Ben Lazarov all went for at least 15.  Team Roberson was able to keep it within striking distance late but never was able to truly catch-up. Team Dorfman would take the Win here in the Quarters and move on to a Final4 battle with Rivals Team Apuli on the Hockey court.

For Team Roberson, there is no tougher test than facing these guys in Hoops. It happens. Nice first season and thanks for playing!

Quarters (Softball):
4. Team Lehrman (The Bucket List) v. 5. Team Stone (Chipotle)

Team Lehrman and Team Stone both had eyes on the Final4. Both had nice seasons and wanted to make a name for themselves on this night by moving on to the Final4 and de-throning the 2x Champs #1 Team Zimmerman. Only one Team could get that chance though.  Back in Week 6, Team Lehrman defeated Team Stone in a great Softball game by a score of 5-4.. So this one was truly going to be anyone’s Game.. Jesse Pollans had a huge day at the plate for Team Lehrman as did Jordan Leonard. Meanwhile for Team Stone, Griffin Pollard had a couple key hits as did Alex Arkin.  Both Teams played well in this one, making plays in the field but also getting timely hits.  When the final out was recorded Team Lehrman had closed out their 2nd 1-run W over Team Stone of the season, and this time it would launch them to the Final4!

For Team Stone, it was an extremely impressive debut campaign for these youngsters. They have a great future ahead of them.. We’ll see some in the Champaign Campus League in the Fall and they will surely be back a year from now in 2018 with more experience and look to make the leap to the elite level!  Thanks for playing!

Final4 (Softball):
1. Team Zimmerman (Sunset Foods) v. 4. Team Lehrman (The Bucket List)

Team Lehrman was fresh off their big W over #5 Team Stone and got to take the field against the Back2Back Champs with some nice MO on their side. All Team Zimmerman was playing for… Their 4th straight trip to the Championship and trying to get the first 3peat in Chicago League history.. Well, we were in store for quite the Game.. #1 Team Zimmerman jumped out to a big lead as they have done so often over the years.. They were up by a Touchdown mid-way through the Game but Team Lehrman wouldn’t surrender. The hits would continue to come and Team Lehrman would battle their way back into a 10-10 tie!  Team Zimmerman would get their last at-bats in the Bottom of the 7th.. They’d need a run to advance and that is exactly what they got! #1 Team Zimmerman avoided the collapse and Won it 11-10 in walk-off fashion! All that stands between them and their 3peat is one more Softball W!!

For Team Lehrman, they were painfully close to both knocking off the Champs and earning their first Championship Game appearance. These guys had a GREAT run this Summer. They finished in the top-half of the League in what was a really competitive League. They got an Elimination done in the Playoffs and came a couple outs away from beating Team Zimmerman in the Playoffs – something no one has done since August 2014. These guys have a really great base to build upon and they could be the next budding dynasty of the League.. Thanks for playing!

Final4 (Hockey)

3. Team Dorfman (Hakimian Imports) v. 7. Team Apuli (Rockin’ Refuel)

So here’s the question here? What would win out? Team Dorfman was the fresher Team but Hockey has been their one true weakness over the years.. Team Apuli on the other hand would be entering their 3rd Hockey Game of the night and was absolutely gassed from their battle with Team Kornblatt.. They also were looking to make their first Championship Game in All Sports Series. The answer? Team Apuli had enough left in the tank! Jason Widen had a hat trick and Captain Justin netted 2 Goals himself to give #7 Team Apuli their improbable 3rd Win of the Night and send them on their way to the Championship!! Cinderella is still dancing! They will take on Team Zimmerman who is looking to earn the first 3peat in Chicago League history!

For Team Dorfman, they had a really good season and added yet another Final4 to their illustrious resume. It has been a 2-horse race for most successful All Sports Series franchise between them and Team Zimmerman over the past 12-24 months.. 2017 has been great to the Dorfman/Hakimian/Lalez groups – they have won 2 more Crowns in 2017 – Team Dorfman won the Co-Ed Volleyball League and Team Lalez won their 3rd Chicago Hoops League in 4 years.. However, a 3peat is not something they have done and if Team Zimmerman wins on Monday Night, the debate is for real.. They will be pulling for Team Apuli in that one. We’ll see these guys in October for the Chicago Hoops League. Thanks for playing!

That’s it for this week. Thanks again to the Teams that are finishing up and Congrats to the Championship Contenders!
