2017 Chicago Spring Flag Football – Playoffs Week 2 (June 6)

Updated: June 9, 2017
On Tuesday Night we CROWNED the first ever Chicago Spring Flag Football League Champs and just like in the Fall, it was Team Jiminez who left with the Championship! That makes it two straight titles for them in what is quickly becoming one of the most impressive debut years in All Sports Series history. These guys followed a similar path as in the fall, they started off a bit slowly in the Regular Season but turned it on just before the Playoffs and then hit their stride at the perfect time. We are going to break down each of the final Games below but we want to Congratulate them as well as Runners-Up Team Holway and 3rd place finishers Team Apuli.

Playoff Review

SEMIS: 2. Team Holway (Biaggi’s) v. 3. Team Apuli (StudentCity)

These Two Teams were going to lock-up AGAIN for what seemed like the 50th time this season.. Both knew their opponent well and both have been on the opposite side of wins/losses against the other. This was truly a toss-up with a spot in the Championship hanging in the balance. Team Apuli was still without their QB Michael Glink in this one and so Captain Justin would assume the reigns. Team Holway was missing one of their key pieces as well.. Tyler Max was sidelined with an injury a couple weeks back..

Team Holway got on the board first with a beautiful ball from QB and Captain Brad to Michael Bernstein who hauled in his first of many TDs on the night. Team Apuli would answer with QB and Captain Justin to Mikey Matasar and we were tied at 6. Brad Holway then scampered into the endzone to make it 13-6. Shortly after Halftime, Marc Pagano was able to tip a pass near the line of scrimmage and after a few bobbles, he snagged the INT and took it to the house to put Team Holway up two scores.. From there the route was on and #2 Team Holway would advance to the Championship!

For Team Apuli, it was another season of getting remarkably close but not winding up the final Team standing. They are do for some Playoff breaks here.. The injury bug bit them hard and at the worst time. Had they been at full-strength it really may have been a different story. We will see most of these guys scattered throughout different All Sports Series Teams this Summer including the Men’s “All Sports” League and potentially the brand new Summer Flag League on Sunday Nights. Thanks for playing!

CHAMPIONSHIP:  4. Team Jiminez (cea Study Abroad) v. 2. Team Holway (Biaggi’s)

…and then there were 2! This was a Rematch from just a week ago when Team Jiminez defeated Team Holway by a score of 6-0 to clinch their spot in the Championship Game.. Here’s where we were at.. If Team Jiminez, who has no Losses in the Playoffs, Wins it is over, they are the Champs. If Team Holway Wins this first Championship Game, it would set up Winner Take All Rematch, immediately following this one..

Team Jiminez got the ball and went right down to the field to steal any momentum that Team Holway had come in with from the previous Game.. It was Captain Alex to Jonathon Frosolone, both of whom have had an exceptional Playoff run here.  Team Holway answered with Holway to Bernstein for the 3rd time on the night.  Team Jiminez then scored next making it 12-6 with a TD from Captain Alex to Cisco Castelan.. Team Holway would answer and make it 12-12 at the Half. This was a far cry from their 6-0 Defensive Battle a week ago…  The score would stay tied at 12 for much of the second half though as the pace of the Game really slowed and both Teams buckled down, knowing the Crown was within reach.. Team Jiminez had the ball with about 4 minutes to go, after a punt return got them to midfield.. A minute or two into the drive they had broken through and Captain Alex hit Norman Perez to put them up by a score with time for just one possession left.. Team Holway would race out to midfield quickly. However, the drive would stall and set up a fourth and long situation.. Team Jiminez would hold and with that last Defensive stance, they would be Crowned the Champs for the second straight season! More on them in just a bit.

For Team Holway, it was a bittersweet end to the season. They fought extremely hard and battled their way to the Championship Game on the League’s final night but just didn’t have the right recipe to defeat the streaking Team Jiminez in the final couple of weeks of the season. Captain Brad and co. will break off into various Teams throughout the All Sports Series landscape this Summer. Hopefully this bunch can give it another go in a Flag League in the future as the Crown was so close for them. Thanks for playing and see you soon!

Now for the Back2Back Champs! Team Jiminez has asserted themselves as the best Flag Football Team in Chicago. They have now won two straight Leagues, their first two in All Sports Series, and they show no signs of slowing down. They are a deep unit that shows keeping fresh his a huge asset.  It seemingly takes them a couple of weeks to always get going but they know how to peak at the right time as they followed the exact same script this Spring as we saw last Fall.. Everyone else needs to beware because a new Dynasty is emerging here. Congrats again!

That’s it for the first ever Chicago Spring Flag Football League! Thanks for playing!
