Updated: June 1, 2017

On Thursday Night we Crowned the Chicago Spring League Hoops Champs! #2 Team Dean finished off the year with 2 Wins on Thursday Night to claim the Championship! We have to start there and give them a gigantic Congratulations! We also need to give a shout-out to the 2x Runners-Up Team Unger who advanced to the Championship Game by defeating last season’s Champs Team Darcy in the Final4! It was an incredible night with 3 Games finishing with a combined margin of victory of 10 points. We are going to Review all of those below!

Playoff Review

Final4: 2. Team Dean v. 3. Team Shlofrock

This one had all the makings to be special and it lived up to the potential.. These Teams went back and forth with Team Shlofrock holding the lead late in the second half. Jake Lerman scored 21 for them. Captain Jake Shlofrock had 11 too. Tim Traversa had 20 to lead Team Dean in scoring and Captain Tred had 11 as well.. Up and down the score sheet was pretty even throughout the Game. Both Teams kept matching each other. So, Team Shlofrock had the lead late but after a few whistles here and there Team Dean caught up and then took the lead with very little time left.. #2 Team Dean would advance with a 62-58 point Win and head to Championship.

For Team Shlofrock, it was certainly a bitter pill to swallow. They leave this season thinking that they could have and maybe should have defeated the eventual Champs. It’s never an easy one to get over but this group is full of All Sports vets and they will move on and get ready for their next runs as many will take part in our various Summer Leagues. We hope this crew can stay together as they showed a ton in their debut season as a unit. Thanks for playing!

Final4: 1. Team Darcy v. 4. Team Unger

Once Team Dean punched their ticket for the Championship Game we turned the page to what was a Rematch from last season’s Championship Game.. Team Unger had been waiting months for Revenge on Defending Champs Team Darcy and they were finally going to get their shot at it here with a spot in the title Game on the line.. The Teams were both without some of their stars and needed some others to step-up and that’s exactly what we saw.. Judd Barron had 18 and Captain Max Unger had 17 in the absence of Ryan Lederman.. Team Darcy, who brought in an 18-Game Win streak was without several starters here.. Eyad Salem moved into a more aggressive spot and took advantage to lead Team Darcy in scoring on the night. This Game stayed close throughout. Both Teams went on runs but it was never not within reach one way or the other.. Late in Regulation Team Unger held a slight lead. They were seconds away from moving on to the Championship and then Team Darcy showed yet again why they were the Defending Champs.. Brendan Ferrari hit a big-shot along the baseline to tie it up with just about a second to go! OVERTIME! In OT, both Teams got a few big shots.. This time it was Team Darcy nursing a lead late.. After a missed free throw, Captain Max Unger would get the ball with his Team down 1 and with about 10 seconds left.. He decided to keep it in his own hands and went coast to coast to the bucket and got the lead back for his Team! That would be final basket of the Game and #4 Team Unger would advance in Overtime to the Championship. They avenged last season’s Championship Loss!

For the Defending Champs Team Darcy.. All things must come to an end at some point and their 18-Game Win Streak will go down as one of the most impressive things we have ever seen in All Sports Series. They were truly amazing and you won’t hear them making excuses but they were without several of their key contributors in this one.. This is a group that heads into the Summer Hoops League looking to gain their 3rd Crown in 5 seasons.. They have never not made the Final4. They are quickly amassing one of the finest resumes in any of our Leagues. Congrats on another great ride and thanks for playing! See you soon.

Championship: 2. Team Dean v. 4. Team Unger

..and then there were 2… Team Dean got to watch the other semi-final Game take place and knew full well that Team Unger was gassed from their OT battle with #1 Team Darcy.. Team Dean smartly wasted little time and put their foot on the gas jumping out to a big lead early on.. Team Unger managed to scratch and claw their way back into it and tied it up at halftime.. They stayed close for the next 10 minutes or so and then Team Dean went on another big run led by a few buckets from Tim Traversa (who was the high scorer in this one with 19)… Could Team Unger come from behind yet another time? Well, they sure made it interesting.. They got within a few points late but just ran out of time and it was #2 Team Dean who would take the Crown! More on the Champs in just a bit..

For the Runners-Up (again), Team Unger, they will likely get frustrated with that moniker come the Summer League but it’s a testament to them that they have been able to amass so many Playoff Ws over the past two seasons, even if they haven’t been able to hoist the Crown (yet). Captain Max Unger and co. play the right away and are a Team by every sense of the word.. They are a crew on the rise and come this Summer they may finally get past being 2nd place. Congrats on a great run and see you back soon!

For the Champs, Team Dean – what a season! Captain Tred has been at this a long time in All Sports Series and he finally has landed the big one!  This group fell in Week 1 to Team Darcy but went on a tear since Opening Night and never looked back. They just continue to come at you from multiple angles and are extremely tough to score on with their length on the other end of the floor. This group can be an emerging dynasty as we will see them play on both Tuesdays and Thursdays this Summer! Congrats again and thanks for playing!

That’s it for the 2nd session of the Chicago Spring Hoops League! Hopefully see everyone over the Summer and Thanks for playing!
