2017 Chicago Spring Hoops – Week 2 (Jan. 26)

By
Updated: January 31, 2017

Week 2 is always a fun one to analyze as Teams have an added sense of confidence or pressure on themselves depending on their Week 1 result.. We also get to see a separation from the pack at the top of the Standing even by just a bit.. Through 2 weeks now there are just 3 Teams who are left unbeaten.. Team Darcy who entered as one of the favorites as well as Team Unger and Team Halperin all sit at 2-0.  Doubtful many had those 3 as the 2-0 squads in the League. We also want to point out that starting this coming Thursday (Week 3) we will be incorporating 4 Teams from the Chicago Sport & Social Club Basketball League. They will be a part of the schedule, standings, power rankings etc. starting next week!

Power Rankings

1. Team Darcy (Badger Bowl Lime) – 2-0

No surprise who still sits at #1 following Week 2. They followed-up a great Week 1 with a FIFTY-EIGHT point Win over previously 1-0 Team Amzaleg on Thursday Night. Team Darcy couldn’t miss. They are normally a dangerous squad but when they are firing from the outside like this, they are just unstoppable. Doug Wollney had a Game-High 24 points. Captain Bret Darcy had 17 as well. They look to jump out to 3-0 against #4 Team Tucci.

2. Team Unger (Barn & Co.) – 2-0

Holding firm at #2 is Team Unger after yet another impressive showing in Week 2. They went down to the wire for the second straight week against a top-flight opponent.. This time against Team Reich and once again came out victorious. This Team is the real deal folks. Judd Barron had a League-High with 37 points. Captain Max Unger had 23 points in this one. Can they get 3 straight Ws when they take on Team Winegardner on Thursday?

3. Team Halperin (Badger Bowl Gold) – 2-0

Such a pleasant surprise to see Team Halperin rounding out the Top-3 at 2-0. The talent was unquestionably there but they have gelled together rather quickly over the first couple of weeks. Many of these guys met each other for the first time on Opening Night and it’s rare to see such success so early on. Axel Playner led with 18, Brian Harris had 16 and Captain Joey went for 14 in the Week 2 Win. They have a big-time clash coming in Week 3 with the winless Team Reich. Team Reich is a true title contender.. This very well could be the Game of the Week!

4. Team Tucci (Ian’s Pizza) – 1-1

Team Tucci showed the rest of the League just what they are capable of on Thursday Night. They entered the season as one of the favorites for the whole thing.. They stumbled in Week 1 against the surprising #2 Team Unger but rebounded very nicely with a 20 point W over Team Kaplan in Week 2. They had 3 scorers with 16 points on the night including Captain Tucci, Tommy Fernitz and CJ Ryan.. They also welcomed back the newly married man Phil Hayes who returns after an injury over the summer. Welcome Back! They get #1 Team Darcy in Week 3 in what will be a co-Main Event of the evening.

5. Team Reich (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 0-2

If you are scratching your head as to why a Team that is 0-2 sits in the Top-5, then you aren’t very familiar with Team Reich. They’ve lost two Games to start the season by a combined 5 points.. Those two Losses came to the Teams ranked #1 and #2.. Team Reich is a team with true title aspirations and there is no doubt they are disappointed with their start but it really won’t have a huge impact on the way they finish.. Tremell Adams had 35 points and Toussaint Knox had 25 on the night.  They get #3 Team Halperin to continue to their brutal schedule to start the campaign.

6. Team Kaplan (Badger Bowl Neon) 1-1

They took one on the chin a bit this Thursday Night but against one of the League’s best in Team Tucci. They are still in solid position coming at #6 through 2 weeks.. Josh Berman led the way again with 23 points and Captain Brett had 16 in the Loss. They are going to go head to head with Team Schmack in Week 3 in one of the first Games involving Chicago Sport & Social Club and All Sports Series!

7. Team Amzaleg (Biaggi’s) – 1-1

Well, they’d like to have that one back. They took on #1 Team Darcy and understood full well why Team Darcy is the #1 team in the land following it.. Charlmers Oscar was in double figures and led the Team in scoring on Thursday Night. At 1-1 they are still in good shape. They will go face to face with All Sports Series vets Team Shaffer in Week 3. Team Shaffer will be searching for their first Win on Thursday Night.

8. Team Karmin (Farm Lake Barn) 1-1

Jumping up into the Rankings for the first time this Season is Team Karmin. They do so after their first W of the year.. They defeated Team Shaffer 53-45 on Thursday Night. Anthony Horton had 18 in Week 2 while Jon Horwitz and Graham Conatser were also in double digits in the Win. They take on Chicago Sport & Social Club’s Team Indy #4 in Week 3 as they look to get their 2nd straight W.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Colmery (StudentCity) – 1-1

Team Colmery got their first Win of the 2017 season on Thursday Night. They defeated Team Golman in an intense Game. Defense was full go for the entire Game here as both Teams were giving it their all. Team Colmery was rolling extremely deep on Thursday and those fresh legs helped key their victory. Vince Carballo and Austin James led the Team in scoring with 10 points each. They take on Team Kalina in Week 3!

Team Golman (SLA Insurance) – 0-2

Still searching for Win #1 is Team Golman. They looked a lot better in Week 2 as they had a full compliment of players as opposed to Week 1. They just couldn’t find enough baskets late to take the lead with Team Colmery. Sam Witt and Todd Neuhausen combined for half of the squad’s points in Week 2. They take on Team Buchanan in Week 3 and will look to enter the Winner’s circle for the first time.

Team Shaffer (Badger Bowl Red) – 0-1

Team Shaffer tipped-off their season in Week 2 (they will have a Double Header later in the Season).. This group comes with a TON of championship experience.. Both from the recent Team Zimmerman dynasty that has reigned supreme over the Chicago Men’s “All Sports” League the past couple of Summers as well as the original Chicago Dynasty — Co-Ed Champs Team Bartlett.. This group has more combined Crowns than any other in the League. They just couldn’t find enough offense until very late in this one to take a 2nd half lead over Team Karmin. Captain Ian Shaffer scored 11 of his 16 points in the Game’s final minute.. The furious comeback just ran out of time.. They get Team Amzaleg in Week 3.

Team Winegardner (Sushi Kushi Too) – 0-1

Last but not least (remember this is alphabetical order) is Team Winegardner.  This group is fresh off Winning the Championship in the first ever Chicago Flag Football League a couple months ago.. They bring much of that Championship squad into the Spring Hoops League where they try to make their case for one of the best 6-month stretches in All Sports Series history.. Their season started on Thursday Night (they’ll have a double header later on) against Team Halperin and they were rusty.. Expect them to look a lot better as we move on.. Miguel Valdez had 19 in this one. They get #2 Team Unger on Thursday Night.

That’s it for Week 2. See everyone on Tuesday Night!
