2017 Chicago Spring Hoops – Week 5 (Feb. 16)

By
Updated: February 22, 2017

Had another fantastic night of Hoops action on Thursday, highlighted by an Overtime classic between Team Kaplan and Team Unger.  Jake Preskill knocked down not one but two 3pt shots off the glass in the final moments of regulation and OT. It was enough to give Team Kaplan the big Win and earn a spot in the Top-5 this Week. In other news, Team Darcy is still undefeated and with a over #5 Team Kaplan can lock down the #1 seed.

Power Rankings

1. Team Darcy (Badger Bowl Lime) – 5-0

As mentioned at the top Team Darcy got to 5-0 on Thursday Night after cruising to a big win over Team Halperin in Week 5. Jimmy Martin went for 23 and Doug Wollney went for 21 to lead them in scoring. They took care of business early in this one. Looking ahead they have #5 Team Kaplan and then Team Winegardner to finish up the Regular Season. A perfect 7-0 record is certainly within reach.

2. Team Reich (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 3-2

Up a spot to #2 this week is Team Reich who have now rattled off 3 Wins in a row, which is the second longest active streak in the league, behind only Team Darcy. They went for 103 on Thursday Night and that should certainly scare the rest of the League. These guys lit it up from 3 over the Summer and we had been waiting for them to have an outburst.. It finally came and just in time for them to get into full-gear before the Playoffs. Tremell Adams went for 36 points and is now the PPG leader in the League. Andre Knox also had 26 in this one. They move on to face #4 Team Tucci in what should be the Main Event of Week 6.

3. Team Schmack (Shamrocks) – 5-2

Team Schmack went 1-1 in their double header on Thursday Night. They dropped Game 1 against Team Amzaleg but bounced right back to defeat Indy Team #4 in Game 2. Jack Garrity had 26 in the Win and Dan Miller had 16 as well. These guys are now looking at closing out their Regular Season against Team Winegardner who will be hungry for a W.

4. Team Tucci (Ian’s Pizza) – 3-2

Team Tucci played really well on Thursday Night in the Win over Team Colmery. They got back to back Wins for the first time this season and it seems they are finding their groove and just in time to ramp up for what should be an extended Playoff run.. Captain Alan Tucci went for 29 while big man Drew Zahora had what was likely a triple double (19 points and an undisclosed amount of Rebounds and Blocks).. Phil Hayes added 18 as well. They are going to go toe to toe with Team Reich in Week 6. Get ready for a high scoring affair.

5. Team Kaplan (Badger Bowl Neon) 3-2

Team Kaplan had their best Win of the Season on Thursday Night. They battled for 44 minutes with Team Unger, which was not enough to decide it.. Then got the Win after being down in Overtime by 4 points with under a minute to go. Jake Preskill and Josh Berman really helped solidify the Win on this night. Preskill knocked in two big 3s late and Josh Berman made a spectacular pass to find Preskill for the go ahead bucket with just seconds left in OT — the eventual Game Winner. He’d end with 27. Team Unger is one of the best Teams in the League and Team Kaplan showed everyone that they can play anyone.. They get #1 Team Darcy in Week 6. Should be a good one.

6. Team Unger (Barn & Co.) – 3-2

Team Unger suffered a hard Loss on Thursday Night. They were leading in Overtime but just couldn’t seal it at the free throw line late. Judd Barron had 22 here and Captain Max Unger had 18. They’ve lost two in a row but but to some of the League’s best so they can’t get discouraged. They will move on to a date with Team Halperin who has lost three in a row.. One Team will get back on track in Week 6.

7. Team Buchanan (Tremendous Upside) – 3-3

Out of the 16 Teams in the League, none are likely happier about “the merger” between All Sports Series and CSSC than Team Buchanan. Pre-merge they were 0-3.. Post-merge they are 3-0. They are really rolling right now and have climbed back up to the .500 mark. Their latest W was against previously 3-1 Team Karmin.  This is a group that just needed a few weeks to figure things out but now they are shaping up to be major players as the season progresses. They will close out their Regular Season on Thursday against Team Amzaleg.

8. Team Karmin (Farm Lake Barn) – 3-2

Team Karmin was without about 60% of their regular roster on Thursday Night. They had some quality subs fill in but just couldn’t come up with the W against Team Buchanan. Michael Malvin made his Thursday night debut and scored 20 on the night. Brandon Lathon, another All Sports Series vet, that was getting his first run in on Thursdays added 13. They will have their normal rotation back in Week 6 for a matchup with Team Golman.

9. Team Halperin (Badger Bowl Gold) – 2-3

Team Halperin is in a bit of a rut. They started 2-0 and all things looked great.. Their schedule picked up a bit and they haven’t been able to find their footing again.. They are a really talented Team though, that hasn’t changed since Week 2.. They are still learning how to gel as a unit. Justin Ward led with 18 points on Thursday. These guys have a chance to bounce back in a big way in Week 6 when they take on #6 Team Unger, who has lost a couple in a row as well.. Something has to give.

10. Team Shaffer (Badger Bowl Red) – 2-2

Team Shaffer got back to .500 after a big win over Team Indy #4 on Thursday Night. Their Defense was once again a big reason for Winning. They are currently in the Top-5 for Points Against Per Game. They fight incredibly hard on the Defensive end, especially considering they don’t have the prototypical big man to help protect the paint. Captain Ian Shaffer had 20 and Mark Weingarten went for 18 on the night.  They have TWO Games coming on Thursday Night – First with Team Kalina and then Team Winegardner.. Both of whom they are currently ahead of in the Standings.. Can they get to 4-2 by the end of Week 6?

11. Team Amzaleg (Biaggi’s) – 2-3

Grabbing hold of the final spot in the Rankings this week is Team Amzaleg. They were able to snap their skid and get back on track with their Win over Team Schmack on Thursday Night. Jason Shape led the way here with 17 points in the Win. They get #7 Team Buchanan in Week 6.. A group that has won 3 in a row. It will be a tough test for them but one that they can Win, and a chance at .500 looms.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Colmery (StudentCity) – 2-3

Team Colmery had the tough task of facing Team Tucci when they are “on.” When Team Tucci is on, as we saw in Week 4 as well, they are virtually unstoppable. Their size in the paint and then numerous shooters around the arc just proves to be a match-up nightmare.  Corbin Newquist had a nice night with 18 points in this one. They move on to face Team Indy #4 in Week 6.

Team Golman (SLA Insurance) – 1-4

A week after getting their first Win, they once again played well but came up just a bit short on Thursday. Austen Hesch had 14 in their Game against Team Kalina in Week 5. They were without a few starters and should get them back (aka the Bros. Golman) for next week when they take on #8 Team Karmin.

Team Indy #4 – 2-4

Double Header Thursday didn’t go as they hoped but they fought hard in both Games. It’s a lot to ask, to play twice in a night. They started off the night with a Game against Team Shaffer and then played Team Schmack. DaRon Greason had a nice Game 2 with 21 points and Brock Reckelhoff did as well with 14 points. They will face Team Colmery in Week 6.

Team Kalina (Plante Moran) – 2-4

Team Kalina got a big win over Team Golman on Thursday Night. Chris Levy led them in scoring in the Win with 18 points while Matt Etter and Kyle Overby both had 11 points to help shoulder the scoring burden.. They take on Team Shaffer this coming Thursday Night which will be their final Regular Season contest.

Team Winegardner (Sushi Kushi Too) – 1-3

Team Winegardner happen to run across Team Reich during one of their “on fire” Games.. Nothing can be done. You just have to give credit to them and move on. Gustavo Ayala had 14 and Nick Nolan had 13 points on Thursday Night. They have a Double Header looming in Week 6.. First they take on Team Schmack and then they will play Team Shaffer in what could be a pivotal Game in the Standings.

That’s it for this Week. See everyone Thursday Night!
