2017 Chicago Spring Hoops – Week 6 (Feb. 23)

Updated: March 1, 2017

As we exit last Thursday Night, the Playoffs are coming into clearer focus… Team Darcy got to 6-0 and clinched the #1 overall seed in the Playoffs before we take the court for the final week of the Regular Season.  Something we do not see very often.. A couple quick notes as we enter the final week of the Regular Season…

  1. The four CSSC teams will actually start their Playoffs this coming Thursday Night in two head to head battles. They were seeded 1-4 amongst themselves.. The two Winners of those head to head Games will then join the 12 All Sports Series teams for a 14-Team single-elimination tournament beginning on Thursday March 9.

Power Rankings

1. Team Darcy (Badger Bowl Lime) – 6-0

The clear cut #1 Team in the Power Rankings as we enter the Regular Season Finale is Team Darcy.  The broke open what was a tight Game at halftime against Team Kaplan and went on to Win by 40+ in what was an extremely dominant second half that showcases what they can do when they catch fire.. Doug Wollney led the way once again with 21 points. Sam Martinez had 17 as well. They look to complete the extremely rare feat of going undefeated in an All Sports Series Regular Season when they take on Team Winegardner in Week 7.

2. Team Reich (Dr. Jacob D.D.S.) – 4-2

Holding firm at #2 this week is Team Reich following their best Win of the Season. They defeated the uber-talented Team Tucci on Thursday Night and did so by 20 points and without a couple key contributors. Tremell Adams led the League in scoring on Thursday Night with 39 points. Toussaint Knox was the 2nd leading scorer, not just on his team, but in the League with 33 points. These two couldn’t miss. Adams is now the PPG Leader as we head down the stretch.. They will take on Team Colmery in the League’s final week as they continue to jostle for Playoff positioning.

3. Team Schmack (Shamrocks) – 6-2

Team Schmack looked extremely impressive in what was the conclusion to their Regular Season last Thursday Night against Team Winegardner, earning a 30+ point Win. Dan Miller and Tim Staunton both had 20 points in the Win. They now get ready to embark on the second season. They were the top qualifier of the 4 CSSC Teams and will be matched-up with #4 Team Kalina in the Opening Round.. Only one can march on..

4. Team Unger (Barn & Co.) – 4-2

Team Unger bounced back on Thursday Night and got one that they really needed. They were the story of the first weeks of the season – jumping out to a 3-0 record and against top-flght competition.. They hit a bit of a bump in Week 4 and 5 but look to be back as we head into the Playoffs. Captain Max Unger had 16 and Judd Barron had 15 to help get the W. They got a quality win against Team Halperin and look to finish the season on a high note against Team Amzaleg, as they will also be score-board watching to see where the crowded top of the Standings finish.

5. Team Karmin (Farm Lake Barn) – 4-2

Team Karmin earned their 4th Win of the Season on Thursday Night behind 30 points from big-man Drake Orser who gives this Team a completely different look and a real shot at beating the League’s very best.  Between him, Drew Sultan, Anthony Horton and Daniel Dorfman the size on this Team can match-up with just about anyone in the League.  Something that will be vital come Playoff time. They finish the Regular Season against old-friends Team Kaplan in what should be one of the best Games on Thursday Night.

6. Team Tucci (Ian’s Pizza) – 3-3

Falling just outside of the Top-5 is Team Tucci as we head into the League’s final week.. They just couldn’t match the firepower of Team Reich on Thursday Night, something we aren’t used to seeing out of this Group. Team Reich couldn’t miss though. Captain Alan had 30 on the night however. For the record, their 3 Losses have come against #1 Team Darcy, #4 Team Unger and most recently #2 Team Reich. They have had a very tough schedule and look to close it out on a Winning note as they make what very well could be a journey to the Crown.. They close against Team Halperin.

7. Team Kaplan (Badger Bowl Neon) 3-3

Team Kaplan hung with #1 Team Darcy in the first half. Actually they didn’t just hang, the Game was tied as we headed into the break.. Then, Team Darcy kicked into another gear and that was all she wrote. The first half showed them that they can really play with anyone. That came on the heels of the OT W against #4 Team Unger.. Team Kaplan has been super impressive. Jake Preskill had 19 to lead them in scoring again and Captain Brett Kaplan had 16. They will take on familiar foes in Team Karmin to close the Regular Season. A win means they would catch Team Karmin and hold a key tiebreaker against them.

8. Team Buchanan (Tremendous Upside) – 3-4

Team Buchanan fell in a close Game on Thursday Night against the tough Team Amzaleg squad. They got 15 points out of Jason Kellerman in this one.. They lost a player two minutes in to what looked like a significant injury and had to shake that off. Never an easy thing to do. They now move on as the #2 ranked CSSC squad of the 4 and will take on 3 seeded Team Indy #4 (yes that is confusing).  The Winner advances into the field of 14. Should be a good one!

9. Team Shaffer (Badger Bowl Red) – 3-3

Team Shaffer had not one but TWO Games on Thursday Night as they made up for their BYE in Week 1.  In the first Game, they defeated Team Kalina by 11 points and one of their better Offensive performances of the Season. They had a short-bench though and just ran out of gas for Game 2 where they fell to Team Winegardner. Mark Weingarten and Jon Nickow both had 22 points in the Win and Captain Ian Shaffer led them in scoring during Game 2 with 18 points. These guys can really hang with just about anyone because they fight so hard on both ends of the floor.. They close out the Regular Season against Team Golman.

10. Team Amzaleg (Biaggi’s) – 3-3

Into the Top-10 this Week is Team Amzaleg who has now won a couple Games in a row to fight back to the .500 mark with one left to play. This week they got the W over #8 Team Buchanan in a Game that came down to the wire. Both Ian Bohan and Christopher Elder had 20 points to help lead them to the Week 6 victory. They close out against #4 Team Unger in what should be a fun close to the Regular Season. A win there would catch Team Unger and provide them with a tiebreaker over them.

11. Team Indy #4 – 3-4

Rounding out the Rankings this Week is Team Indy #4 who earned this spot thanks to a big Win against Team Colmery in the closing seconds of Thursday Night’s final Regular Season Game for them. They won 56-54 and got 14 out of Brent Zajaczkowski to lead the way. This group has played in a lot of close Games this Season and are certainly battle tested.. They now look ahead to an Opening Round Playoff Game against #2 Team Buchanan with the Winners advancing to the 14-Team field.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Colmery (StudentCity) – 2-4

Team Colmery battled for 44 minutes with Team Indy #4 on Thursday Night and just couldn’t get the ball to stay down toward the end of the Game to take the lead. Nick Karayannis had 18 points to lead the way for them on Thursday Night. They were 2-1 at one point but have hit a bit of a rough patch as of late.. They have a tall order with #2 Team Reich to close out the Regular Season.

Team Golman (SLA Insurance) – 1-5

Team Golman took on Team Karmin on Thursday Night and just couldn’t match the firepower of Drake Orser down low. They did have Matthew Kornblatt debut and he led them in scoring against some of his normal running mates, he went for 16. Josh Bender had 12 as well. These guys are playing much better basketball than compared to the first couple of weeks. They will close out the season against Team Shaffer on Thursday Night.

Team Halperin (Badger Bowl Gold) – 2-4

Team Halperin played well on Thursday Night, just not well enough to get the Win. This a group that started off 2-0 and has a bunch of talent.. They are just struggling to re-gain that early season chemistry. Joshua Stern had 14 to lead them in scoring.  They have one more chance to make a big splash this Thursday Night to close out the Regular Season against Team Tucci. A win would catapult them into the Playoffs with a TON of momentum.

Team Kalina (Plante Moran) – 2-5

Team Kalina concluded their Regular Season on Thursday Night against Team Shaffer. They came up a bit short in that one. Captain Bryan Kalina went for 18 in the Loss. They now will head to the first round of their Playoff season. They will take on the #1 seeded Team Schmack with a spot in the 14 Team Playoffs on the line. This is a group that can get it done, just need to bring their best!

Team Winegardner (Sushi Kushi Too) – 2-4

Team Winegardner was another Double Header Team on Thursday Night. They were unable to Win in Game 1 against #3 Team Schmack but bounced back just minutes later to knock off Team Shaffer. Getting a split in a Double Header is all you can really ask for.. It is a tough thing to do but they were able to showcase their depth in Game 2. Nick Nolan had 17 in the Win and Captain  Sam Winegardner had 14 as well. They now move on to close out the Regular Season against #1 Team Darcy.. Can they pull the upset prior to the Playoffs?

That’s it for this week. See everyone on Thursday Night!
