Playoff Review

1. Team McNichols (The Bucket List) v. 4. Team Lerman (SLA Insurance Blue)

These two Teams played all the way back around July 4 and on that night we saw Team Lerman get the better of Team McNichols.. It was the only Loss of the Season for the #1 seed and they were eager at the opportunity to get some revenge. Team Lerman came out of the gates swinging though, hungry for a spot in the Championship. They built an early lead and forced Team McNichols to burn an early T.O. and re-group.. By halftime the lead had diminished and we were in for a great second half. Romeo Magloire had 27 for Team McNichols while Jake Lerman went for 24 and Luke Jacobson had 20 for their group.  With about 10 minutes to play Team Lerman went cold and Team McNichols started to pull away a bit, by the closing minutes, it was a double figure lead for the #1 seed and they would move on to the Championship!

For Team Lerman, it was a great debut season in the Chicago Hoops League scene as a group. This squad has a great future together and are future Champs. Not a bold statement here. They have a ton of talent and with a bit more experience they are going to hoist the crown. We will see them back out here in the Fall. Thanks for playing!

2. Team Rhum (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 6. Team Dean (Sunset Foods)

Just like the other semi-final, this one would be a Rematch. Team Rhum earned an 8-point Win over Team Dean back in Week 6 of the Regular Season. Both squads have a ton of talent and both have Championship experience.. Team Dean came into this one as the reigning and defending Thursday Night Champs (from the Spring) and Team Rhum had won the 2015-16 Chicago Hoops League. Both Teams know how hard it is to get to the Championship and didn’t want to waste this opportunity.

This Game was a slugfest from the beginning. Neither Team would give an inch. There were many lead changes and both groups really played well. Captain Tred Dean led all scorers in this round with 28 points. Both Captain Rhum and Andrew Marks had 18 for their Team.  Team Dean would have the lead down the stretch. They were up as much as 10 with under 8 minutes to go. Team Rhum would not go down easily though and they caught up by actually slowing the Game down. Team Dean missed some free throws and had a chance to end it in Regulation but it was not meant to be.. Team Rhum would force OT.  In OT, Team Rhum ran the clock down for one last possession and Marin Kukoc would get to the rim and score the biggest bucket of the night, to earn Team Rhum the comeback W and a spot in the Championship Game!

For Team Dean, they played so well for about 38 minutes, but they just couldn’t close this one out. They faced a bunch of adversity this summer and they were still minutes away from a trip back to the Finals. They should be proud of what they accomplished and we will see many of them back this Fall in various Leagues. Thanks for playing!

1. Team McNichols (The Bucket List) v. 2. Team Rhum (Rockin’ Refuel)

It is very rare that we get to the Championship and the Top-2 seeds from the Regular Season are left standing.. They enter the Playoffs with such bullseyes that we normally see at least one major upset along the way.. Well, on Thursday Night we were fortunate enough to wind up with the best two Teams in the League ready to square off for the Crown. Both groups were going to be tired from grueling Final4 battles. These two clubs played back in Week 3 and Team McNichols got an exciting 2pt W on that night.. We were 44 minutes away from the Crowning the Champs…

This Game was tense from the get go. Both Teams knew each possession would matter. The stars came to play as Marin Kukoc and Romeo Magloire would lead their Teams in scoring. It was a Defensive-minded Game as it was in the 40s with just a few minutes left. The Teams would trade leads in the first-half but for most of the second half Team McNichols would hold it. With about 5 minutes to go they were up 5 and there was a couple possessions in a row where Team Rhum couldn’t get a bucket and Team McNichols would come down and cash in on the other end.. The lead would extend and it was then clear that Team McNichols would win their first Championship! More on them in a second.

For the Runners-Up, Team Rhum, they obviously leave disappointed. They have won these before and know how hard it is to get to the Championship. They just were drained from the comeback OT Win in the Final4 and their legs showed it in the closing minutes of the title Game. They should be proud of their run though this Summer.. Several quality Teams in the League and they got the #2 seed and to the last Game of the year.. These guys will return for the THE Chicago Hoops League where they were the 2015-16 Champs and will look to make it 2 in 3 years. Thanks for playing!

For the Champs – Team McNichols! First and foremost, Congratulations! What a season. They finished the Regular Season as the #1 seed and pulled off the rare feat of doubling up the Regular Season 1st with the Crown!  These played great ball all Summer long but saved their best for the final night of the season where they came from behind against Team Lerman and then soundly defeated Team Rhum in the Championship. This core has played in a few Leagues together now and we are looking at a group that is only improving. They are real threats to win THE Chicago Hoops League that tips off in October as well. Congrats and thanks for playing!

That’s it for Thursday Nights this Summer. See everyone soon!
