On Thursday Night we tipped-off the Summer League Playoffs!  10 Teams began the night with hopes of claiming one of the Final4 spots and it was going to be a hard road for everyone to qualify. We saw some excellent individual performances, like the one from Romeo Magloire who had 33 points to lead all scorers on the night, for #1 Team McNichols. Below we will recap all the action!

Playoff Review

Open. Rd: 7. Team Berkson (StudentCity) v. 10. Team Zhang (SLA Insurance White)

Team Berkson and Zhang were competing for the final spot in the Elite8 and a chance to take out #2 Team Rhum when they got there.. Team Berkson started off strong but Team Zhang was able to stick with them early.. Justin Busiel had 22 to lead all scorers in this one for Team Berkson and Sam Selby had 15 for them as well. DaRon Greason had 15 and George Santizo went for 13 for Team Zhang.. In the end, Team Berkson just had too much firepower in this one and they were able to advance to the Elite8!

For Team Zhang, they didn’t leave with the desired result but they played well in their final outing this Summer. The Game was closer than the score would indicate and they really were in it for most of the Game. We look forward to seeing them back out there with us soon. Thanks for playing!

Elite8:1. Team McNichols (The Bucket List) v. 9. Team Kaplan (Karyn Collection)

#1 Team McNichols had an excellent Regular Season and with that comes both expectations and pressure.. The #1 seeded Team always has to be alert for an upset, as Teams will give them their best punch and play “with nothing to lose.” Both Teams shot the ball well in the 1st Half but Team McNichols would open up a lead moving in to the second half – thanks in large part to Romeo Magloire and his 33 points.  Captain Chris had 16 points on the night as well. They were just too much and #1 would punch their ticket to the Final4!

Team Kaplan fought hard against the #1 Team in the League but they just didn’t have an answer inside against Romeo Magloire.  These guys always give it their best and we will see them again soon.. Brad Deutsch led them in scoring and Adam Block shot the ball well too. Josh Berman, an All Sports Series vet from all the way back in 2010 – leaves us for a year to go Harvard – decent excuse.. He will be missed but we’re excited to get him back late in 2018. Thanks for playing and everyone in the Fall!

Elite8: 2. Team Rhum (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 7. Team Berkson (StudentCity)

This was an interesting potential match-up when the Bracket came out and Team Berkson ensured that we would get it with their Opening Round W over Team Zhang. #7 Team Berkson actually defeated #2 Team Rhum in the Regular Season.. It is very hard to beat the same Team 2x in a season, especially when they are of the caliber of Team Rhum.  Team Berkson came in swinging with an initial momentum surge from their first W on the night.. Andy Stempel was draining 3s from distance and with hands in his face and they actually led early.. As the 2nd half came into fold, Team Rhum really clamped down on him and Team Berkson, who were sporting tired legs, just couldn’t find buckets late. #2 Team Rhum was able to catch-up and advance, punching their Final4 ticket! Marin Kukoc had a Game-high 23 and Andy Marks had 15 in the W.

For Team Berkson, it was a nice first run in the All Sports Series – Chicago Hoops scene. They got their first Playoff W and as a young core will be able to build upon that. Some of these guys will venture back to Champaign in the Fall where we may see them in the Campus Leagues again while others will continue to come back to the Chicago Leagues. Look for them to really make an impact in the next year.

Elite8: 3. Team Neuhausen (Live Clean CHI) v. 6. Team Dean (Sunset Foods)

We mentioned it last week in the Playoff Preview — this was the match-up we were waiting for on Night 1 of the Playoffs. #3 Neuhausen and #6 Dean assured us that we were going to be in for a fast-paced affair and that is what we got. The guard play on both Teams is spectacular and the ball moves really well on both sides. These Teams must have traded the lead a dozen times, if not more. Calvin Kang was the high-scorer in the Game for the #3 team with 23 points and Courtney Griffin had 21 for Team Dean. Michael Mulroe added 16 points for Team Dean as well, and Dan Monckton threw down a dunk, in-traffic, that the rim is still rattling from.. The Game was still extremely close with just a minute left and Team Dean – who are the reigning Thursday Night Champs from the Spring – called upon their past Playoff experience to grab the W! They would move on to yet another Final4!

For Team Neuhausen, it was a hard way to go out.. They were so close and played really well! Sometimes you just go up against another great Team and someone has to bow out.. It is obviously an earlier exit than they would have hoped for but this group is really, really good and they have only played 8 Games together. We hope they can keep this core together and grow as a unit throughout the year in our other Leagues, as they have a ton of potential… Thanks for playing!

Elite8: 4. Team Lerman (SLA Insurance Blue) v. 5. Team Schwartz (Biaggi’s)

The 4/5 Game is always one to look for in the Elite8 and this one was no different. Both Teams Lerman and Schwartz have the ability to win the whole thing, but only one could claim their spot in the Final4 on this night. Jake Lerman had 26 for Team Lerman and helped them get out to a big lead mid-way through the first half.. Team Schwartz would claw back though as we have seen them do countless times over the years.. Derrick Davis had 20 to lead them in scoring.. Team Schwartz made it close with about 6 minutes left to play and they were within striking distance after that.. They just couldn’t get a go-ahead run and Team Lerman would sink some Free Throws down the stretch to ice the Game. Team Lerman would advance to the Final4!

For Team Schwartz, they exit earlier than hoped, but they finished the Regular Season in the top-half and played well in their Playoff Game. These guys have a Crown in them and it is only a matter of time until they grab it.. This group will be back in THE Chicago Hoops League later this Fall on Sundays. Thanks for playing guys!

That’s it for this week! Thanks again for those who finished the season and good luck our Final4!
