2017 Chicago Summer TUESDAY Hoops – Playoff Preview (Aug. 1)

By
Updated: August 3, 2017

On Tuesday Night we concluded the Regular Season of what was a fantastic Summer League. The Rookies who have taken the League by storm Team Schultz were able to complete the perfect Regular Season, getting their 7th W of year against Team Shlofrock.  There was then a 3-way tie for 2nd place with Teams Dean, Maione and Clark. We’re going to breakdown all of the match-ups for next week’s Opening Rounds and Elite8 Games. By the end of the Night we will be left with just 4 Teams. Just to remind everyone – the 9-12 seeds compete in Opening Round 1, then the Winners there meet the 7 and 8 seeds in Opening Round 2, where the final 2 spots in the Elite8 are earned for later in the evening. There will be a TON of action on Tuesday Night!

Playoff Preview

Open. Rd1:
10. Team Geocaris (Chipotle) v. 11. Team Brystkowski (CEA Study Abroad)

Team Geocaris comes into the Playoffs with the #10 seed. They were 2-2 through 4 weeks but have lost 3 straight to come into Win or Go Home time.. Team Brystkowski just snapped their L-skid on Tuesday Night, picking up their first W of the Summer and some much needed MO as we head into the most important games of the season. These Teams met all the way back on Opening Night and Team Geocaris picked up the W.. Will history repeat itself? Definitely a toss-up Game.. The winner moves on to play #7 Team Rubin later in the evening.

Open. Rd1:
9. Team Unger (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Purple) v. 12. Team Farris (Dr. Jacob D.D.S. Blue)

Team Unger took two straight Losses to end the season and finished below .500.. This is not what we have come to expect from the 2-time Runners-Up.. However, they are still playing good ball and had some bad luck with tiebreakers to come in at #9 here.. They will take on Team Farris, who is still searching for their first W of the Summer.. Team Unger will be favored here, but crazier things have happened.. The Winner moves on to face #8 Team Schur in Opening Round 2.

Open. Rd2:
8. Team Schur (SLA Insurance) v. 9/12

Team Schur followed up their heartbreaking L to Team Dean in 3OT, two weeks ago, with another tough defeat at the hands of another former Championship club – Team Darcy. It’s not the way they wanted to come into the Playoffs but they have shown the League what they are capable of.. They will take on the Winners of #9 Team Unger and #12 Team Farris. In all likelihood it will be #9 Team Unger who they beat by 3 points back in Week 3. If they can get past them again here in Opening Round 2, then they will move on and try to do something that no one has ever done before.. Defeat Team Schultz in All Sports Series.

Open Rd2:
7. Team Rubin (Chicago Trolley) v. 10/11

Team Rubin got the nod for the #7 seed over Teams Schur and Unger thanks to their Strength of Schedule during the Season. Unlike the rest of the “favored” Teams in the above Opening Round match-ups, they are not limping into the Playoffs. In fact, it is the exact opposite – they are coming in Winners of 2 straight and playing their best ball of the Summer. They will take on either #10 Geocaris or #11 Brystkowski – both of who they will be the favorites against and then if they take care of business they will go on to face #2 Team Dean in the Elite8.  Team Dean are coming off of a Spring League Championship so it will not be easy to knock them off but with Team Rubin’s recent play, they can do it!

Elite8:
1. Team Schultz (Biaggi’s) v. 8/9/12

Here’s the deal. 3 more Wins earns them the Crown. Forget about the Rookie status. They just ripped through the Regular Season, going 7-0 and if they can make it 10-0 they will put their first (of seemingly many) Crowns on their mantle. They will take on either Team Schur or the Winner of Unger/Farris here in the Elite8 with a spot in the Final4 on the line. They will definitely be favored and as long as they can withstand the initial surge of whoever their opponent is, who will come in hot from a W, they are going to be just fine.

Elite8:
2. Team Dean (Crystal Lake CDJ) v. 7/10/11

Team Dean is looking to earn their second straight Championship as they are fresh off the Spring League Crown. First true step in doing that is to get out of the Elite8 and back to the Final4.  They will take on either #7 Team Rubin or  the winner or #10 Geocaris v. #11 Team Brystkowski. No matter the opponent they will be the favorite and deservedly so as they earned the #2 seed (the same spot they won the title from a few months back).. Look for them to push the pace and try to outrun a seemingly tired opponent right into their Final4 berth.

Elite8:
3. Team Maione (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 6. Team Shlofrock (Sandusky Lee)

The Defending Champs of the Summer League – Team Maione – look to make their way back to the Championship as the #3 overall seed. They are going to take on familiar foes with Team Shlofrock, most of which they have battled numerous times throughout the years. This is a star-studded affair with plenty of Players capable of going for 20+. These teams didn’t meet in the Regular Season so it will be a first time matchup this Summer and the first time we get to see this particular version of Team Shlofrock try to outscore the sharp-shooting Maione squad. This one could very well steal the show and only one of these Teams will make it to the Final4 a week from Tuesday.

Elite8:
4. Team Clark (Schweitzer Title) v. 5. Team Darcy (The Bucket List)

Last but certainly not least, is the Main Event of the first night of the Playoffs. Teams Clark and Darcy both have legit title aspirations. Team Clark has been as impressive as any Team so far this Season.. Team Darcy has never been knocked out before the Final4 of a Hoops League and have two Crowns to their name. These two Teams are very familiar with one another and their tempos play very different. Whoever can dictate the pace is likely to claim the W when the night is over. The Winner here will move on to the Final4 and likely gets to take on #1 Team Schultz when they get there. Get your popcorn ready!

That’s it for the Preview. See everyone there for the Playoffs on Tuesday!
