Playoff Review

Opening Rd Hoops:  8. Team Liss (Testing Timers) v. 9. Team Wellek (Dr. Jacob D.D.S)

We talked about it in the Preview.. When the Bracket came out, this was one of, if not the most interesting Game we’d see on Opening Night. In one corner, the Defending Champs Team Wellek.  In the other corner, Team Liss who would be embarking on their first set of All Sports Series Playoffs.. Team Liss’ strongest sport was certainly Hoops this Season and this one was sure to be a fun one… Team Wellek held the lead for much of the second half but they couldn’t really put Team Liss away. Team Wellek’s group missed a couple free throws down the stretch and Team Liss hit a few big shots to stay within striking distance.. Shane Cooper had 26 for Team Wellek and Tommy Sutker had 23.. On the other side, James Karis also had 26 and Oren Alima had 19. This one came down to the wire and when all was said and done, the Defending Champs were able to escape with a 1pt W – 70-69.

For Team Liss, it was a great first taste of Playoff action. They went toe to toe with the Defending Champs and had another bounce or two gone their way, they would have sleighed the giants.. These guys are just finishing up high school and have a TON of time left in the College/Prep League. They are just getting started and could be a force for years to come. Thanks for playing!

Elite8 Hoops: 1. Team Zisook (Rockin’ Refuel) v. 9. Team Wellek (Dr. Jacob D.D.S)

The Defending Champs Team Wellek had very little time to celebrate their first W as they had to take the court immediately against #1 Team Zisook in the Elite8. A spot in the Final4 was up for grabs in this one.. This was actually a rematch of the Final4 from a year ago, where Team Wellek knocked out Team Zisook in Softball in what was an extremely memorable Game. Team Zisook has been counting down the days to try and get redemption.. Their chance was finally here.. Jason Beerman led the way for the #1 seed and had a Game-high 34. Jacob Iden had 19 and Luke Norcia had 17 for Team Zisook as well in what was an up and down Game. Shane Cooper continued what was a really impressive season – going for 33 points for Team Wellek here. Jack Gurvey had 19. Team Wellek was noticeably gassed from their first Game and Team Zisook was able to take advantage.. The Game was well played but Team Wellek just couldn’t keep up.. Team Zisook would earn the W and get some Revenge from 2016. They were moving on to their 3rd straight Final4!

For the 2016 Champs – Team Wellek, it was still an impressive year. It is extremely difficult to go Back2Back. All eyes were on them for the entire season and they happened to fall in a very tough place on the Bracket, especially once Team Zisook picked Hoops.  These guys are among the elite and will be back for one more run next Summer before likely venturing to the Chicago Leagues. Thanks for playing!

Opening Rd Football:  5. Team Tickman (Once Upon) v. 12. Team Baer (Sushi Kushi Too

These two Teams met on the gridiron for a spot in the Elite8 against #4 Team Gerszonovicz on the League’s final night.. Team Tickman has really excelled in Flag Football this season and their QB – Andrew Sledd is a huge reason why. He is the fastest guy in the League and just carves up opposing Defenses. He was able to lead Team Tickman here to an impressive Win. He counted for 4 TDs, hitting a host of WRs like David Laser, Jake Prizant, Jon Chaikin and Parker Rijos.  They move on to face #4 Team Gerszonovicz in what should be one of the better Flag Football Games this League has seen in years.

For Team Baer, they ran into one of the hardest match-ups in the League. Andrew Sledd and Team Tickman may be the best Flag Football Team in the League and Andrew Sledd is certainly the most dominant player at a sport in the League this Summer.. It happens. They did have some success though this Summer in their first year as a unit. They have a core to build with going forward and should be back a year from now, as a Team to watch. Thanks for playing!

Opening Rd Softball: 7. Team Fialkow (SLA Insurance) v. 10. Team Gordon (Gordon Bros.)

The 7/10 Game has always been a fun one. The two Teams are usually very evenly matched and more often than not, both Teams have a lot of talent. That certainly held true in 2017. These clubs were battling for a spot against #2 Team Slovis in what turned into the Northbrook section of the Bracket. They went back and forth.. Trading the lead through the middle innings. After 7 innings, we were tied at 7 and needed to go to Extras.  Team Gordon took the lead in the top of the 8th and so we went to the Bottom of the 8th with Team Fialkow needing a run to tie and 2 to Win it.. Adam Wagner, who had been extremely clutch on the day for Team Fialkow, came to the plate with two runners in scoring position and drove the ball into the Gap in Left-Center.. Two runs would score and Team Fialkow would advance to the Elite8!

For Team Gordon, it was a heart-breaking conclusion to their Season but they played a great Game and had a really nice year. These guys played well each and every week and sometimes you just get beat. Captain Eric has been at this for about as long as any Captain and he along with his crew are still searching for that first All Sports Series Crown. We will see them back in some League for sure in 2018. Thanks for playing!

Elite8 Softball: 2. Team Slovis (Sunset Foods) v. 7. Team Fialkow (SLA Insurance)

So #2 Team Slovis, who watched the ending of the extra-inning Fialkow W just minutes before, knew they were going to face a #7 Team Fialkow squad that was feeling really good and holding a lot of momentum. Unfortunately, for Team Slovis, just because they were aware of this, didn’t mean they could really do anything about. Team Fialkow played their best ball of the Summer. They jumped out to 7-2 lead and never looked back.. Team Fialkow had clubbed their way to their first Final4 in Franchise history!

For Team Slovis, obviously they left disappointed. They had such a strong July and were able to spring-board into the #2 seed late in the season. They went undefeated in Softball in the Regular Season and were able to choose their path but on this night just ran into a Team Fialkow squad that seems to have a bit of destiny on their side. Team Slovis was really impressive though and we’ll see many of them in Campus Leagues this school year and hopefully back here next Summer in 2018. Thanks for playing!

Opening Rd Softball: 6. Team Sernick (Chipotle) v. 11. Team Herzog (StudentCity)

We mentioned it in last week’s Playoff Preview.. Every year there is a double-digit underdog that shocks the College/Prep League during the Opening Night of the Playoffs. Team Herzog had been coming on as of late and were a prime candidate for that. Team Sernick found themselves on the Softball diamond where they don’t love to be and that mix was a recipe for an upset. Team Herzog was able to grab a 3-1 lead in this one, where hits were really at a premium.. They were able to hold on and that is where the score would finish. Team Herzog would advance to the Elite8!

For Team Sernick, they had a great season and have to not let this last night change that. They were able to finish in the top-half of what was an extremely talented group of Teams this Summer. Captain Sernick and co. will venture to various Campus Leagues throughout the School year and then we will see them back in 2018 for their 3rd Summer.. With some of the top seeds moving on to the Chicago Leagues they will be among the favorites next year!

Elite8 Softball: 3. Team Stotter (First Bank of HP) v. 11. Team Herzog (StudentCity)

With #11 Team Herzog’s upset of Team Sernick in the Opening Round, they were certainly wearing Cinderella’s glass slipper into this Elite8 Game with one of the favorites for the Crown – #3 Team Stotter. Team Herzog felt like they were playing with house money and as a result they started the Game with both momentum and no pressure.. They jumped out to an early lead and Team Stotter all of a sudden had the weight of the world on their shoulders.. With just a few innings to play Team Herzog still led, but Team Stotter began to mount their comeback.. Jake Mandel hit a huge Home Run and drove in a few runs.. This really turned the tide.. Team Stotter would grab an 11-9 lead and that is where the Game would end.. #3 Team Stotter punched their ticket to the Final4!

For Team Herzog – they had an incredible Rookie run in the Playoffs. They knocked off the #6 seed and had the #3 seed on the ropes. This group can really utilize this night and build upon their core Players for a year from now where they will know full well what All Sports Series is all about. Thanks for playing!

Final-5 on Wednesday Aug. 9:

We are left with just 5 Teams as we enter the final night of the League.. One semi-final is set with #3 Stotter facing off with #7 Fialkow.. The winner in that Softball Game will go to the Football Championship. On the side of the Bracket, we have #1 Zisook waiting in the semi-final as well, only their opponent is yet to be determined.. #4 Gerszonovicz will take on #5 Tickman in a Flag Football Elite8 showdown, with the Winner moving on to play #1 Zisook in Softball.. One of these 5 Teams will wear the 2017 Crown. Who will it be!?

Thanks to everyone who wrapped up their Season last Wednesday, and good luck to the Final-5!
