It took THE CHI Hoops League 210 days to crown our 2018-19 Champions.

Every player in THE CHI Hoops League has invested a lot of time and energy during our 2018-19 season and we thank you all for participating!

We entered Championship Sunday with just three teams left standing. #1 Team Swish House and #7 Team Maione would compete for the right to play in the Championship game(s) against current title holders #2 Team WOLVERINES.

The Winner of the #1 Team Swish House vs. #7 Team Maione game would need to beat #2 Team WOLVERINES to extend their season another week as #2 Team WOLVERINES came into Championship Sunday without a blemish on their Playoff record.

We will review all the action below from Championship Sunday, but we must start off by giving a huge Congrats to Team WOLVERINES who secured Back-to-Back THE CHI Hoops titles on Sunday afternoon!

Here’s a Link to the PLAYOFF BRACKET.

Playoff Review

#1 Team Swish House vs. #7 Team Maione – Bottom portion (2-loss teams):

The essential Semi-Final game between #1 Team Swish House and #7 Team Maione was well worth the hype on Sunday afternoon. #1 Team Swish House had an opportunity to get to their first THE CHI Hoops Championship Game if they won this contest against #7 Team Maione. But #7 Team Maione was not going to go down without a fight. Both teams had two-losses on their Playoff record and the losing team would see their spectacular 2018-19 season come to an end. This would be the third meeting between the two clubs this year (second of the postseason) with #7 Team Maione winning both previous matchups. #1 Team Swish House started this game strong on the back of Jonathon Dues who ended up leading the squad in scoring finishing with 26 points (10-18 FG), four assists and two rebounds. Cory Starkey also stepped up huge in this contest for #1 Team Swish House, finishing with 23 points (11-21 FG), five rebounds and two assists. Unfortunately for #1 Team Swish House, they were unable to find answers on the defensive end of the court as #7 Team Maione would pull away late in the second half and knock off #1 Team Swish House by the final score of 91-86. This is a veteran All Sports Series Hoops crew that is always in the thick of the Championship hunt. We’ll see most of these guys on various Summer League Teams and hopefully they can band together again next season as they really have enough to win the whole thing. Thanks for playing!

#7 Team Maione made sure the inevitable was unavoidable. Max Bielfeldt knocked down yet another jumper in the waning moments, pulled his jersey into his mouth and yelled to the rafters at the DePaul Ray Meyer Center in triumph once more. A special, record-setting postseason saved for Bielfeldt, with a memorable comeback added to the long list of accomplishments for this squad. Max Bielfeldt and Matthew Vogrich carried #7 Team Maione right back to THE CHI Hoops Finals, as #7 Team Maione beat #1 Team Swish House 91-86 on Sunday afternoon in the bottom portion (two-losses) of the Playoff bracket to make it back to the Championship game(s) for the second consecutive year. Now, Bielfeldt & Co. would be playing for another THE CHI Hoops title, just as they planned since Week 1 way back in early October. Bring on #2 Team WOLVERINES again. Bielfeldt finished with a game-high 49 points (22-32 FG) to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds. Vogrich added 23 points (9-16 FG), seven assists and three rebounds to help lead a second-half comeback that sent #7 Team Maione to yet another THE CHI Hoops title game. #7 Team Maione would now return to THE CHI Hoops Finals for a rematch with Captain Randall Hampton and #2 Team WOLVERINES, who ended up beating #7 Team Maione in last years Finals as #2 Team WOLVERINES captured its first THE CHI Hoops Championship. More on this game below…

#1 Team WOLVERINES vs. #7 Team Maione – Championship Game(s):

There were still a few seconds left on the clock when #2 Team WOLVERINES stormed off their bench to begin a celebration that wasn’t guaranteed. They couldn’t wait any longer. They had reached their destination: dynasty. Josh Davis scored 22 points (9-10), All-Star Bryant Orange finished with 19 points (9-20) and Captain Randall Hampton came up just shy of adding a triple-double as #2 Team WOLVERINES won their second straight THE CHI Hoops title on Sunday afternoon, 77-71 over #7 Team Maione to complete a Playoff sweep (zero losses). Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there is no denying them. That’s how you know you are a great team, is when everybody is coming after you. Whether it’s their opponents, whether its different players panning for them, whether it’s the fans, the media that hate them, it feels good when you’re the team that everybody’s gunning for. It makes you better. No team this year was better. Overcoming obstacles all season long, #2 Team WOLVERINES won their second straight Finals match-up against #7 Team Maione. It was the first Playoff sweep (zero-losses) in recent memory. #2 Team WOLVERINES will of course enter next season as the hunted, but what else is new? We hope to see them compete this Summer as they try to add to their historic mantle yet again. Congratulations on yet another Championship Team WOLVERINES!

#7 Team Maione would come into the Championship Game(s) on a high-note as they just took care of business the previous hour against #1 Team Swish House to make it back to the Championship Game(s) for the second consecutive year. #7 Team Maione would enter this contest with two losses on their Playoff record, meaning that they would need to beat #1 Team WOLVERINES three consecutive times in order to claim the Title as #2 Team WOLVERINES entered this contest with zero losses on their Playoff record. The good news for #7 Team Maione was that if they did beat #2 Team WOLVERINS on Sunday afternoon, they would be afforded the opportunity to come back next week to try to beat them two more times. Max Bielfeldt, who just poured in a Playoff high 49 points in the previous game against #1 Team Swish House, started this game right where he left off. Bielfeldt would connect on four of his five first shots to help #7 Team Maione jump out to a nice lead early in this contest. But as the game wore on, the shots just wouldn’t go in for Bielfeldt and #7 Team Maione. Bielfeldt would end up finishing this contest with a game-high 26 points (11-25) while hauling down six rebounds but it just wasn’t enough as #7 Team Maione would lose in the title game for the second consecutive year, falling by the final score of 77-71. It was an amazing effort once again by one of the true staples of THE CHI Hoops League and there is no doubt in our minds that this squad will once again be one of the favorites to bring home the title in the 2019-20 season. Thanks for playing!

That’s it for the 2018-19 season. We look forward to seeing everyone over the Summer. October will be here before you know it. Thanks for playing!
