2018-19 THE Chicago Hoops Week 12 – (Jan. 13)

Updated: January 18, 2019

We’ve officially played two-thirds of the 2018-19 regular season and things remain wide open in all four of our Divisions. And things have become a little more interesting in the overall standings as well, where only three games now separate teams 1-6 and only four games now separate teams 7-14.

#1 Team Swish House have claimed sole possession of first place in the East (and the overall standings) following their big Week 12 Game of the Week victory over #4 Team Onions. Meanwhile, #2 Team WOLVERINES jumps #3 Team Wolves and #4 Team Onions this week in the Week 12 Power Rankings following their recent performance on Sunday night.

After securing their fourth win of the year on Sunday afternoon, #9 Team Purimetla are now tied for 1st place in the North with #10 Team Schwartz. Team Chess and Mathematics is only one game behind these two squads in the North and they too have their eyes set on that coveted North Division Crown.

With only six games remaining on the regular season schedule, now is the time to kick it into high-gear, grab some W’s and secure those top Playoff seeds.

Power Rankings

1. Team Swish House – East – 11-1

After their ninth straight win Sunday in our Week 12 Game of the Week, #1 Team Swish House have taken sole possession of the overall No. 1 seed in THE CHI Hoops league and sole possession of first place in the East Division. Sterling Williams scored a team and game-high 26 points (12-19 FG) while adding seven rebounds and dishing out a week-high 12 assists during Sunday’s 86-72 victory over #4 Team Onions. Mr. Williams has been on an absolutely tear over his last four ballgames, averaging 28.25 PPG, 6.75 RPG and 6.5 APG during that stretch. Cory Starkey also had himself a hell of a game on Sunday evening, pouring in 20 points (10-19 FG) while adding six assists and pulling down a season-high 14 boards to help his squad secure their 11th win on the year. Team Swish House will look to make it ten straight wins and 12 out of 13 when they take the court on Sunday night against #7 Team Deutsch (5-7) in our Week 13 Game of the Week!

2. Team WOLVERINES – South – 10-2

Team WOLVERINES are streaking again! Four wins in a row and now sporting the second longest winning streak in the league, Team WOLVERINES really made a statement on Sunday afternoon beating #3 Team Wolves by a final score of 78-72. This win was a group effort as four different players scored in double digits, led by Bryant Orange’s 22-point (10-21 FG), seven rebound and five assist performance. Since the beginning of the steak on Dec. 09, Team WOLVERINES have held their opponents to 65.3 PPG, almost eight points better than any other team over that span. This team has also had their eye on that #1 spot in our Power Rankings for quite some time and are now one step closer. They still must stay focused and determined if they plan on overtaking that #1 spot as they put their four-game winning streak on the line against Team Chess and Mathematics (3-9) coming up in Week 13.

3. Team Wolves – East – 10-2

Team Wolves came into Week 12 with only one loss to their name and riding high on a five-game winning streak against a Team WOLVERINES crew who also happened to be winners of four straight. Something had to give in this one. Unfortunately for Team Wolves, Team WOLVERINES had no plans of giving up their streak on Sunday afternoon. Team Wolves lost a very tough battle, falling 78-72 in a game where they certainly had their chances to secure the victory. A few key contributors really struggled on the Offensive side of the ball as Rodney Metellus and Donte Logan were only able to muster up 10 points combined against the best Defensive unit in the League. Joe Kozak tallied a game and season-high 30-points (13-23 FG) and seven rebounds for Team Wolves, unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to get past a very determined Team WOLVERINES squad. Team Wolves will have to dust this loss off quickly and look to start a new winning streak coming up on Sunday evening when they take the court against Team Reisner (4-8).

4. Team Onions – West – 9-3

Team Onions came back to earth on Sunday night after dropping a hard-fought contest to #1 Team Swish House in our Week 12 Game of the Week. Winners of their previous six games and not having to taste defeat since Nov. 04, Team Onions came into this Week 12 battle with all the momentum in the world but just didn’t have enough left in their tanks late in this ballgame to get past the hottest team in the league. Andy Stemple led the charge for Team Onions in this contest, scoring 16 points (6-13 FG) while adding two rebounds and three assists during Sunday’s tough 86-72 loss to #1 Team Swish House. Team Onions had one of their worst shooting performances of the year on Sunday night, shooting a combined 46% (29-63) from the field. They’ll look to put this tough loss behind them and regain their shooting touches coming up in Week 13 when they take the court against #10 Team Schwartz (4-8).

5. Team Division 6 – South – 8-4

Team Division 6’s second-ranked Offense cannot always cover for their 11th-ranked Defense, but when they put up over 100 points (as they did on Sunday afternoon for the second straight week) it’s nearly impossible to beat them. By the final score of 107-80 over Team High Fiving White Guys, Team Division 6 picked up their third straight victory and sees their overall record rise to 8-4. Two of the squads leading scorers, Eric Porter and Billy Kirby had off nights according to their standards, contributing only 38 points combined on 16-32 shooting from the field. But with that came an opportunity for others to step up. We saw the 2018-19 debut of Brad Kruse for Team Division 6 who had 38 monster points on the night to go along with 13 boards and three assists. If Mr. Kruse is going to be a regular part of this squad for the remainder of this season, the #5 Team in the League just got a whole lot scarier. Team Division 6 will look to bring their winning streak up to four games coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #8 Team Clark (5-7).

6. Team Maione – West – 8-4

Team Maione bounced back from a tough forfeit loss to Team LAMBO in Week 11 to grind out a gritty win versus #8 Team Clark on Sunday night. MVP-candidate Matthew Vogrich was everywhere in #6 Team Maione’s 99-78 victory over #8 Team Clark, as he finished with a team-high 29 points (12-19 FG), twelve rebounds and three assists. Mr. Vogrich now only trails Eric Porter of Team Division 6 for the League’s scoring title (minimum six games played) as he is averaging just under 30 PPG. But the true story line of this game was Team Maione’s ability to spread the rock, as three different players contributed 20+ points in this contest. In addition to Vogrich’s 29, Blake McLimans poured in 25 points (10-21 FG) and Andy Timson recorded 24 points (9-13 FG) of his own to help lift Team Maione back into the winner’s circle. Team Maione will look to build on this very solid Week 12 victory coming up on Sunday night when they take the floor against #9 Team Purimetla (4-8).

7. Team Deutsch – South – 5-7

After suffering back-to-back forfeit losses, Team Deutsch was able to rebound very nicely in Week 12 with a huge victory over Team Chess and Mathematics by a final score of 77-70. As a result of this ever-important victory, Team Deutsch moves all the way up into the #7 spot in the Week 12 Power Rankings. Brian Otto generated 23 points (9-21 FG), eight rebounds and a couple of assists to help lead his squad to the seven-point victory over Team Chess and Mathematics. Otto turned in a trademark line, even with his sub-par shooting performance. Otto was rock-solid in non-scoring categories as usual, but his 42.9 percent shooting clip from the field prevented his night from being much better. William Sullivan, Reilly O’Toole and Ross Chukerman all had nice games on Sunday as all three were able to hit double digit scoring figures and combined to score 46 of their squads 77 total points. #7 Team Deutsch will need all these guys to come up with big performances coming up on Sunday night when they welcome #1 Team Swish House (11-1) to the DePaul Ray Meyer Center in our Week 13 Game of the Week!

8. Team Clark – East – 5-7

Captain Rodney Clark was able to score 31-points for the second straight game on Sunday night. However, #8 Team Clark lost to #6 Team Maione by a final score of 99-78, and Clark had to launch 25 shots to score his 31 points. Clark shot just 11-25 from the field, his second worst shooting night on the year. Marcus Agee managed 19 points (8-19 FG), three rebounds and three assists during Sunday’s loss to #6 Team Maione. Agee reached double-digits for his 5th game in a row, despite struggling with his shot from inside the arc Sunday. Although Agee is having a solid season, the All Sports Series Hoops veteran has seen his scoring come-and-go throughout the year. That said, he continues to be a good source of three-and-D production for #8 Team Clark, and is averaging 12.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game on the season. #8 Team Clark will look to put this tough loss in the rearview mirror coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #5 Team Division 6 (8-4).

9. Team Purimetla – North – 4-8

Huge Win over Team Reisner on Sunday Night for #9 Team Purimetla. They got solid contributions from all five of their available players. The win brings their overall record up to 4-8 on the season and now sees them sit tied atop the North Division standings. Adam Jones ended with 25 points (9-11 FG), seven rebounds and five assists during Sunday afternoon’s 75-68 victory over Team Reisner. This is a group capable of really turning it around in the last six weeks of the Regular Season. Their overall record at the end of the Regular Season may not be exactly what they were expecting heading into this season, but this is a group playing solid ball week in and week out. They have another tough test coming up in Week 13 with #6 Team Maione (8-4). A win for Team Purimetla here will give them a solid chance of moving even higher in our upcoming Power Rankings, while a loss will likely see them looking from the outside in once again.

10. Team Schwartz – North – 4-8

#10 Team Schwartz struggled this past Sunday as they were without most of their regular line-up and were only able to suit up five players. They simply ran out of gas in their lopsided loss to Team LAMBO, 82-62. It has been a common issue for them this season as they can’t seem to find any type of rhythm to put a string of much-needed wins together. Austin Brown had a fantastic all-around game against Team LAMBO on Sunday afternoon, finishing with 25 points (10-18 FG), five rebounds and five assists. Brown’s scoring total easily led Team Schwartz, but ultimately, even he couldn’t will his team to victory against a determined Team LAMBO squad. Even after dropping their fourth consecutive game on Sunday afternoon, Team Schwartz still holds a share of the North Division lead. They’ll look to snap this four-game losing skid and try to take back the outright lead in the North when they take the court against #4 Team Onions (9-3) coming up in Week 13.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 3-9

Team Chess and Mathematics has had some nice W’s during this 2018-19 season, including a big win over Team Schwartz in Week 10. There are also a couple of games I am sure that they wish they could have back. This past Sunday was one of those when they fell to #7 Team Deutsch by a final score of 77-70. Captain Rodney Clark dropped his second straight 31-point (11-25 FG) performance to go along with seven rebounds and a couple of assists in Sunday’s 7-point loss to #7 Team Deutsch. Clark led the team in scoring once again and by a wide margin in the contest, having his way along the perimeter as he dropped 9 3PT + AND1. Captain Clark has emerged as the best scoring option for Team Chess and Mathematics and should see the ball in his hand plenty during the final six weeks of the Regular Season. Team Chess and Mathematics will look to get back on track on Sunday afternoon when they tip-off against #2 Team WOLVERINES (12-2).

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-11

Team High Fiving White Guys came into Week 12 hoping to snap their nine-game losing streak and with the hopes of leaving the DePaul Ray Meyer Center with a W and a fresh start to their season. They’ll need to wait another week to turn things around as they fell to #5 Team Division 6 on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 107-80. Matthew Clark once again led the team in scoring with 29 points (12-24 FG) in this contest but any time you give up 107 points, your chances of winning are going to be very slim. This group is currently at the bottom of the Standings but if you wiped away the records, they would be at the very least in the middle of the pack with their level of talent. For some reason this season, the talent has not translated to many victories. They get an important match-up against a Team LAMBO (2-10) squad on Sunday night who will be looking to secure their third straight victory.

Team LAMBO – East – 2-10

In what was by far the biggest upset of Week 12, Team LAMBO got a shocking victory over #10 Team Schwartz, 82-62. They have snapped their recent 10-game losing skid by winning their last two ballgames. John Weinheimer poured in 26 points (12-20 FG) and added eight rebounds and three assists in Sunday’s impressive win over #10 Team Schwartz. It was a fantastic all-around night for Weinheimer, who’s shown the ability to pop off for a barrage of points a handful of times each season in similar fashion. His effort was particularly welcome considering fellow teammate Brock Massie’s struggles (4-12 FG) Sunday. The win was Team LAMBO’s second straight and a huge motivational boost heading into the final six weeks of the Regular Season. They are going to have another tough but very important test in Week 13 as Team High Fiving White Guys (1-11) is next up on the docket for them.

Team Reisner – South – 4-8

The losing continues for Team Reisner, as they now have lost five straight after winning their previous three contests. On the bright side, their stellar play on the Defensive end of the court continues as evident on Sunday in a competitive loss to #9 Team Purimetla. Chris Kozloff led Team Reisner with 16 points (6-7 FG), four rebounds and five assists during Sunday’s 75-68 loss to Team Purimetla. Brad Tivin also provided 14 points (7-8 FG) to go along with five boards and three assists in this contest, unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to get past a very solid Team Purimetla squad. Tivin and Kozloff have been consistent contributors for this team all year, and both will be relied on heavily here in the final third of the Regular Season as Team Reisner will try desperately to become relevant in the race for the South Division crown. They’ll take the court on Sunday evening against #3 Team Wolves (12-2) with an opportunity to get back into the Win column and snap their season long losing streak.

That’s all she wrote for Week 12! Good luck to you all on Sunday!
