2018-19 THE Chicago Hoops Week 14 – (Jan. 27)

By
Updated: January 31, 2019

It has been a carousal ride the last few weeks for the overall No.1 spot in THE CHI Hoops Power Rankings, and Week 14 kept it going round-and-round.

Week 14 brought us some exciting and very important match-ups and they certainly did not fail to deliver. Former #1 Team Wolverines suffers a shocking defeat to #4 Team Division 6 in our Week 14 Game of the Week, giving us yet another new No.1. The crazy cold we’ve been experience here in THE CHI has also seemed to be affecting so many top teams as they appear to be amid a winter cold spell (Team Maione, Team Clark, Team Reisner, etc.).

Get this, though: Only one THE CHI Hoops Team in history (inaugural 13-14 season) has finished the Regular Season with the overall #1 seed and has gone on to win that season’s THE CHI Hoops title.

Meaningful omen for fans and players of all the teams out there chasing new #1 Team Wolves? Or circumstantial stat that doesn’t really mean much?

We’ll let you decide.

Onto our Week 14 Power Rankings!

Power Rankings

1. Team Wolves – East – 12-2

Team Wolves are finally back at the top spot in the Week 14 Power Rankings after some of their rivals suffered through a rough week. Team Wolves secured their second straight victory on Sunday evening by beating East Division rivals Team LAMBO. Tony dropped a team-high 26 points (12-21 FG) for Team Wolves and Donte Logan supplied 21 points (10-14 FG) while adding seven assists and seven rebounds during Sunday’s 90-85 win over Team LAMBO. Team Wolves now sit with an overall 12-2 record (7-1 in their past 8), have a perfect record (5-0) within the East Division and a win over #3 Team Onions under their belts. Team Wolves deserves and is back on top but have arguably one of the toughest schedules remaining as their last four opponents have a combined 37-19 record. They welcome #5 Team Division 6 (10-4) to the DePaul Ray Meyer Center in our Week 15 Game of the Week once we return from our two-week break.

2. Team Swish House – East – 12-2

Holding serve at #2 this week is Team Swish House. Team Swish House recorded a forfeit win on Sunday evening as their opponents #9 Team Clark were unable to field enough starters to play a legal game. The win moves Team Swish House’s overall record up to 12-2 on the year and sees them tied for the overall #1 seed with East division rivals, Team Wolves. Team Swish House will look to make it two-straight victories coming up in Week 15 once we return from our two-week break with a very important match-up against #6 Team Maione (8-6).

3. Team Onions – West – 11-3

Getting back into the Top-3 after a few weeks on the outside is Team Onions following their impressive Week 14 W over West division rivals Team Maione. Joel Pennington paced Team Onions with 21 points (8-12 FG), six assists and one rebound in Sunday’s 102-80 victory over #6 Team Maione. Ryan Coyle also turned in a big performance by supplying 18 points (7-11), nine rebounds and four assists, while Brian Nelms, Andy Stemple and Mike Marietti combined to score 56 points of their own to help their squad secure this important divisional victory. The win also helps Team Onions keep pace with #1 Team Wolves and #2 Team Swish House as they are currently sitting third in the overall standings and only trial these two squads by a single game. Team Onions now has their sights set on that coveted #1 spot, but their next test will be to get past a very tough #10 Team Chess and Mathematics (4-10) crew in Week 15 when we get back from our two-week break.

4. Team WOLVERINES – South – 11-3

What did we do to Team WOLVERINES? Their immediate response to a bump from us all the way up to the No. 1 spot was to go out on Sunday night and put up the second lowest scoring total in Week 14 against the league’s 10th ranked defense. Throw in the fact that every time a new team steps up into the No.1 spot and the fact that they seem to lose it the following week, you now have the makings of a decent claim for a Power Rankings curse. Just Kidding (kind of). Brandon Orange led the way for Team WOLVERINES in this contest, supplying 20 points (9-16 FG), eight rebounds and five assists during Sunday’s 81-66 loss to #5 Team Division 6. Captain Hampton also did what he has been doing all season on Sunday evening and contributed a very solid 19 points (8-16 FG) while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out four assists. Unfortunately for Team WOLVERINES, they could not find enough offense anywhere else to keep pace with the League’s leading scoring offense. They’ll look to get back on track in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break with a match-up against #9 Team Clark (5-9).

5. Team Division 6 – South – 10-4

It was another good week for Team Division 6. Team Division 6 were indeed in revenge mode when they beat #4 Team WOLVERINES on Sunday night in the latest battle for South Division supremacy. Eric Porter scored a game-high 36 points (15-22 FG) while adding five assists and three rebounds during Sunday’s 81-66 win over #4 Team WOLVERINES. Porter has scored 30-plus in back-to-back games, 22-plus in his last four games and has scored 20-plus in every game he has played in this year. Team Division 6’s deep roster can sometimes divert attention from the Leagues scoring leader, but when he’s locked in, Porter is unquestionably the team’s and leagues biggest scoring threat. With their 5th consecutive victory in the bag on Sunday evening, Team Division 6 pulls within 2 games in the overall standings and within 1 game in the South Division. They’ll look to gain another game in the standings in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break with a critical match-up against #1 Team Wolves (12-2) in our Week 15 Game of the Week.

6. Team Maione – West – 8-6

Make it a 3-6 funk for Team Maione since that dominant 5-0 surge to open the season that ran from Oct. 7 through Nov. 11. The lone consolation is that it’s not a huge mystery trying to pinpoint the trouble spots. Team Maione has been a middle of the pack Offensive team over the past few weeks and continues to suffer from a lack of consistent rotations. This squad is built to score lots of points and when they do, they are nearly unstoppable. Tellef Lundevall supplied 24 points (10-17 FG), five rebounds and three assists in Team Maione’s 102-80 loss to #3 Team Onions on Sunday afternoon. The other four starters for Team Maione, Matthew Vogrich, Dylan Richter, Chris Wroblewski and Andy Timson all had double digit scoring efforts in this contest, unfortunately it just wasn’t enough to get past a determined Team Onions crew. Team Maione has four regular season games remaining to start racking up some wins before the start of the postseason. Their next test will come against #2 Team Swish House (12-2) in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break.

7. Team Deutsch – South – 7-7

By the winning score of 80-65 over Team Reisner, #7 Team Deutsch secured their third straight victory and hold serve onto the #7 spot in the Week 14 Power Rankings. The league’s second leading scorer (minimum six games played), Brian Otto, did it again on Sunday night and dropped a huge 25 point (11-20 FG), four rebound and four assist performance on Team Reisner. William Sullivan was also spectacular on Sunday evening for Team Deutsch as he was able to lead Team Deutsch in scoring in this contest with 26 points (11-17 FG), while grabbing eight boards and dishing out eight assists. Team Deutsch gained a game on their South Division leaders, #4 Team WOLVERINES on Sunday afternoon and now they are just four games back with four regular season games remaining. Suddenly, Team Deutsch is one of the hottest teams in the league and with plenty of time to keep climbing up the Standings. They have a big opportunity to make a real impact on both the Division and Overall Standings when they take the court against Team Schwartz (4-10) in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break.

8. Team Purimetla – North – 6-8

Sunday night saw Muraner Milic and Adam Jones at their two-way best; Jones’s posted his fourth consecutive scoring game in double digits while Milic produced his second consecutive double-digit scoring effort on one end. On the other end of the court, they hounded a weary MVP contender Jermain Johnson of Team Schwartz into an uncharacteristic 8-for-23 showing from the field. Jones finished the contest with 17 points (8-16 FG), seven rebounds and four assists while Milic finished with a team-high 23 points (10-11 FG), eleven rebounds and three assists in their squads 90-80 victory over Team Schwartz on Sunday afternoon. Team Purimetla are 3-1 this season when Jones scores at least 17 points and quietly wound up posting a 3-1 record in January. They’ll head into February with a solid two game lead in the North Division title race with four regular season games remaining. Their next test will come against Team High Fiving White Guys (1-13) in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break.

9. Team Clark – East – 5-9

#9 Team Clark did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team in Week 14 and had to take a forfeit loss to #2 Team Swish House. The loss makes it three in a row for Team Clark and sees their record fall to 5-9. Team Clark will look to snap their three-game losing streak when they take the court in Week 15 against #4 Team WOLVERINES (11-3) when we return from our two-week break.

10. Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 4-10

For the first time since our Week 1 Power Rankings, #10 Team Chess and Mathematics have moved up from the depths of the unranked and see themselves sit in the No.10 spot in the Week 14 Power Rankings. Adam Gwardys finished with 23 points (10-20 FG), three rebounds and two assists in Sunday’s 81-66 victory over Team High Fiving White Guys. Gwardys made only his second appearance of the season in Week 14 and he came through with his best scoring output to date. AJ Adekoya made his season debut for Team Chess and Mathematics on Sunday night and came up with a big-time performance, leading his squad in scoring in this contest with 24 points (12-15 FG) while hauling down eight rebounds and dishing out a couple of assists. They were without the services of their floor leader and Captain Gilles Jones in this contest and these two guys filled the void very nicely. They’ll look to keep this winning momentum turning in Week 15 when we get back from our two-week break with a match-up against #3 Team Onions (11-3).

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-13

Team High Fiving White Guys fell in a close one against Team Chess and Mathematics on Sunday Night by a final score of 81-66. This Team is talented enough to win many games in this league. This year they just haven’t. Their roster is full of talent and they have lots of experience under their belts. They are led by a very tough and scoring machine Matthew Clark, who once again led this team in scoring on Sunday night, dropping 33 points (14-25 FG) to lead all players in that category in this contest. Unfortunately, his squad couldn’t muster enough offensive fire power to surpass Team Chess and Mathematics on Sunday evening, but this must be a galvanizing moment for this club. They can only look at one game at a time and take care of business with what’s in front of them. They still have an opportunity to finish within the Top-10 and must look at that as a realistic goal. They’ll look to pick up that illusive second win against #8 Team Purimetla (6-8) when we return to action from our two-week break in Week 15.

Team LAMBO – East – 3-11

Team LAMBO had all the opportunities in the world on Sunday afternoon to get their fourth win on the season. Unfortunately, for Team LAMBO, they came up just a little short and lost a tough battle to East Division rivals #1 Team Wolves by the final score of 90-85. In what was a close game from start to finish, Team LAMBO dropped their 11th game on the season and sees their overall record fall to 3-11. Eric Miller went off for 30 points (13-22 FG), twelve rebounds and an assist but that just wasn’t enough to lead his team to their fourth victory. Brock Massie also had a nice night putting up 21 points (9-14 FG), eight rebounds and three assists in his squads losing effort. This team has the talent and skill level to bang with the best of them in THE CHI Hoops League, but they seem to keep falling a little short. They’ll look to grab that important fourth win coming up in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break, with a match-up against a Team Reisner (4-10) squad that will be doing everything in their power to snap their current seven-game losing streak.

Team Reisner – South – 4-10

By the final score of 80-65, Team Reisner dropped their seventh straight game in Week 14 to a very determined #7 Team Deutsch squad. The score of this game shouldn’t dictate the overall game itself. Team Reisner was hanging with Team Deutsch going into the second half and seemed to be clicking well on both ends of the court. They seemed to be playing their best basketball in a long time until they lost their composer down the stretch and watched this game slip away from them. Marin Kukoc scored 22 points (8-11 FG), while adding nine rebounds and an assist during Sunday’s loss to Team Deutsch. Kukoc continues to pace this squad in scoring and rebounding and will be leaned on heavily during the final four weeks of the Regular Season. This team can win on any given Sunday and no one will want to see their name next to theirs once the playoff bracket is released in a few short weeks. They’ll look to get their fifth win on the season in Week 15 when we return from our two-week break, with a very important match-up against Team LAMBO (3-11).

Team Schwartz – North – 4-10

Team Schwartz took a tough loss on Sunday afternoon, dropping a hard-fought game to #8 Team Purimetla, 90-80. This is their sixth consecutive defeat and pushes their overall season record down to 4-10. Team Schwartz fought hard and played tough in this one as four different players scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough to cool down a scorching hot Team Purimetla crew. Kyree generated 26 points (11-29 FG), six rebounds and an assist during Sunday’s ten-point loss to Team Purimetla. Jermaine Johnson struggled with his shot all night long as he finished with 19 points (8-23 FG) but Jason Vismantas, the model of consistency for this squad, pitched in with an efficient 24 points (9-18 FG), five rebounds and a couple of assists. Week 15, when we return from our two-week break, brings a pivotal match-up for Team Schwartz against #7 Team Deutsch (7-7) who’ll be looking to make it four victories in a row.

That’s it for Week 14. Enjoy the Super Bowl and two-week break! We’ll be back in action on Sunday Feb. 17!
