Welcome back to the Week 15 edition of THE CHI Hoops Power Rankings.

With Week 15 games in the books and only three regular season games remaining on the schedule, it’s time to look at which THE CHI Hoops Finals contenders are in the driver’s seat for a Top-3 seed heading into the triple elimination Playoff Tournament, which teams are still fighting for a Top-7 seed and which struggling clubs are simply looking for some positive momentum heading into the postseason.

As we sit here today, we amazingly have four squads (Team Swish House, Team WOLVERINES, Team Onions and Team Wolves) all tied up for the overall #1 seed. The hottest team in the league right now (Team Division 6) is only a single game back of this pack.

Power Rankings

1. Team Onions – West – 12-3

Making their way into the top spot in THE CHI Hoops Power Rankings for the first time this season is Team Onions following their impressive 98-65 victory over Team Chess and Mathematics on Sunday afternoon. Joel Pennington finished with 32 points (11-15 FG), four rebounds and a couple of assists to lead Team Onions to their 12th victory on the campaign. Dan O’Brian was extremely efficient from the floor for Team Onions in this contest as he finished with 26 points (11-13 FG) while also dominating on the boards, grabbing a season high 15 to go along with four assists. Team Onions have been one of the league’s most consistent winners this season, even with the load management of Mike Marietti and Dan Sheehy’s missed games. The pressing question down the stretch for Team Onions: Can this high-IQ group that has endured sporadic absences find the cohesiveness necessary to win THE CHI Hoops title? Team Onions will look to hold serve with their new #1 ranking coming up in Week 16 when they take the court against #9 Team Reisner (5-10). These two squads met back in Week 4 and Team Onions walked away with a slim 68-58 victory.

2. Team WOLVERINES – South – 12-3

Moving back up into the #2 hole in the Week 15 Power Rankings is Team WOLVERINES following their 91-55 blowout victory over #10 Team Clark on Sunday afternoon. Bryant Orange dropped a team-high 26 points (10-16 FG) to go along with five rebounds and three assists for Team WOLVERINES in Sunday’s 36-point victory over Team Clark. Captain Randall Hampton also supplied 24 points (10-13 FG) while adding a Week 15 high ten assists during Sunday’s lopsided victory. Team WOLVERINES currently own the best record in the South Division (and the League) but keep an eye on them and Team Division 6 as they battle it out for the top spot in the division over the final three weeks of the regular season. These two squads split their home and away this season so it’s all going to come down to the end. Team WOLVERINES hosts #7 Team Purimetla in our Week 16 Game of the Week on Sunday afternoon in a game that could potentially all but secure the South Division crown. These two squads met back in Week 4 and Team WOLVERINES walked away with a 15-point victory.

3. Team Wolves – East – 12-3

Team Wolves or Team Swish House? Who is the best in the East? Who knows? For the sake of our Power Rankings, we are going to give the nod to Team Wolves this week as both they and Team Swish House suffered setbacks in Week 15. By the final score of 86-78, Team Wolves lost a tough battle to the hottest team in the League right now, #5 Team Division 6. Romeo MaGlore supplied 27 points (12-24 FG) to go along with seven rebounds and a couple of assists to lead the way for Team Wolves in their eight-point loss to Team Division 6 on Sunday afternoon. Joe Kozak had another solid night from the floor, dropping 18 points (9-16 FG) while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out a couple of assists. Unfortunately for Team Wolves, it just wasn’t enough to keep pace with the highest scoring team in the League. They’ll need to put this loss behind them quickly and focus their attention on their Week 16 opponents, Team Schwartz (4-11). These two squads met back in Week 4 and Team Wolves recorded a blowout 95-56 victory on that Sunday afternoon. One other note: If you’re betting on who will take first in the East, it might be smart to take #4 Team Swish House. They have one the easiest remaining schedules over the final three weeks.

4. Team Swish House – East – 12-3

Team Swish House are currently tied for first in the East with Team Wolves and hold the best record in THE CHI Hoops along with Team Wolves, Team Onions and Team WOLVERINES. They are widely considered to have one of the most talented rosters and own the best scoring margin (plus-16.7) in THE CHI Hoops League. Perhaps the best news for Team Swish House is the recent play of Jordan Gipson, who has averaged 21.3 points (75.6 shooting), 3.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds during the last three games that he has suited up in and looks like he is approaching full strength for the first time this season. Unfortunately, Gipson’s recent surge did not translate into a victory on Sunday afternoon for Team Swish House as they dropped a tough ballgame to #6 Team Maione by a final score of 80-68. Sterling Williams totaled 21 points (9-17 FG), 8 assists and five rebounds during Sunday’s 12-point loss to Team Maione but it just wasn’t enough to snatch the victory. #4 Team Swish House has three games remaining on the Regular Season schedule to solidify their positioning heading into the postseason. Their next test will come on Sunday afternoon against Team High Fiving White Guys (1-14). These two squads previously met in Week 4 and Team Swish House walked away with an 88-61 victory.

5. Team Division 6 – South – 11-4

No team in THE CHI Hoops league is hotter than Team Division 6 right now. By the final score of 86-78 in our Week 15 Game of the Week, Team Division 6 has now ripped off six straight victories and are only a single game back of holding the best record in THE CHI Hoops league. I’m more fascinated by what Team Division 6 will become over the final three regular season weeks than I am any other team. Eric Porter is awesome. He once again led the squad in scoring on Sunday afternoon, dropping 29 points (11-20 FG) to go along with three rebounds and five assists. But incorporating a soon to be All-Star into a team that is already stacked with big stars like Cullen Barr and Billy Kirby may not be as easy as it looks on paper. The top tier in the THE CHI Hoops league consists of somewhere between six and eight teams: Team Onions, Team WOLVERINES, Team Wolves, Team Swish House, Team Maione, and perhaps Team Deutsch and Team Purimetla. Of all those teams, I think Team Division 6 have the greatest variance in possibilities for how they end the regular season. They’ll look to take their winning streak up to seven games coming up on Sunday afternoon with a rematch against Team LAMBO (3-12). In their previous match-up back in Week 4, Team Division 6 walked away with a 95-74 victory.

6. Team Maione – West – 9-6

Team Maione enter the final stretch of the Regular Season in a precarious position. Team Maione will have to be perfect to catch up to Team Onions in the West Division and will have to hope that Team Onions not win another regular season game. Team Maione currently own the sixth seed, which comes with a favorable match-up in the first round of the playoffs. Meanwhile, Team Maione has two teams (Team Deutsch and Team Purimetla) breathing down their necks trying to take it away. The good news is that Team Maione was able to get back into the Win column on Sunday evening with a huge victory over #4 Team Swish House by the final score of 80-68. Matthew Vogrich totaled 25 points (10-19 FG), three rebounds and three assists in Team Maione’s exciting win over #4 Team Swish House. Vogrich has shown to be one of the most electric scorers in THE CHI Hoops league, and he once again put some of those skills on display on Sunday afternoon, hitting for 25 points. He can get hot quicker than most any other player in the League, and his ceiling is enormous. Vogrich will continue to provide solid production for the semi-finalist from a year ago as we enter the final stretch of the regular season. Team Maione’s next test will come on Sunday evening with a rematch against Team Chess and Mathematics (4-11), a team they beat by a final score of 88-78 back in Week 4.

7. Team Deutsch – South – 8-7

Another team that is currently streaking and playing great basketball in THE CHI Hoops league is #7 Team Deutsch. By the final score of 96-80, Team Deutsch picked up their fourth straight win and eighth victory overall on Sunday afternoon, beating Team Schwartz. The squads leading scorer, Brian Otto, came up huge once again on Sunday afternoon for Team Deutsch, dropping 31 points (13-23 FG) to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Otto has scored at least 23 points in every game he has played in this year. Been telling you for months now that Team Deutsch, who struggled for the first couple months of the season, would turn things around. And they have. Prediction: Team Deutsch, which is starting to get some consistency within their lineup and currently sitting in seventh place, will keep improving, and end up as a Top-7 seed heading into the postseason. While they are officially out of the running for the South Division crown, they still have an opportunity to finish as high as the #5 seed. They’ll look to take their winning streak up to five games coming up on Sunday afternoon with a rematch against #10 Team Clark (5-11). In their previous match-up back in Week 4, Team Deutsch suffered a forfeit loss to Team Clark.

8. Team Purimetla – North – 7-8

Staying put in the #8 spot this week is Team Purimetla. Team Purimetla recorded a forfeit win on Sunday afternoon as their opponents Team High Fiving White Guys were unable to field enough starters to play a legal game. The win (4th straight) moves Team Purimetla’s overall record up to 7-8 on the year and sees them move within one game of clinching the North Division crown. Team Purimetla will look to make it five-straight victories coming up in Week 16 with a very important match-up against #2 Team WOLVERINES (12-3) in our Week 16 Game of the Week! These two squads previously met back in Week 4 and #8 Team Purimetla suffered a 67-52 defeat.

9. Team Reisner – South – 5-10

Snapping their seven-game losing streak and moving back up into our Week 15 Power Rankings is #9 Team Reisner following their 91-69 victory on Sunday evening over Team LAMBO. Brad Tivin paced the squad on Sunday evening, contributing 21 points (10-16 FG), three rebounds and three assists in Team Reisner’s 22-point win over Team LAMBO. Tivin turned in another strong, all-around game in Sunday’s win. Tivin, much like the other Team Reisner starters, can post respectable lines at any given time. Team Reisner desperately needs to pick up some more wins if they hope to enter the postseason with a Top-8 playoff seed. Team Reisner is currently three games out of the 7 seed behind Team Deutsch and will need to win their final three games while hoping Team Deutsch losses their final three games. Consistent elite play from Brad Tivin to complement All-Star Marin Kukoc would certainly help their chances. Coming up on Sunday afternoon, Team Reisner will look to make it back-to-back victories for the first time since Week 8 with a rematch against #1 Team Onions (12-3). In their previous meeting back in Week 4, Team Reisner lost a close one by the final score of 68-58.

10. Team Clark – East – 5-10

Quietly, Team Clark has been sliding, losing their fourth straight game on Sunday afternoon and now barely hanging onto the #10 spot. Worse is their advanced stats: Team Clark – Rodney Clark’s crew — rank 13th in THE CHI Hoops league in defensive rating. This team was living a charmed existence for a while, feasting off the mid-range and getting by with a so-so defense. That being said, this squad can beat any team in this league on any given Sunday. Donald Banks made his season debut on Sunday evening for Team Clark and posted 27 points (13-26 FG), twelve rebounds and two assists in Sunday’s 91-55 blowout loss to #2 Team WOLVERINES. In what was yet another disappointing loss for Team Clark, Banks stepped up with a momentous individual feat. Team Clark will hope that they can continue to receive the services of Banks down the stretch if they plan on making a serious run during the final three-week stretch of the regular season. They’ll look to get back on track coming up on Sunday afternoon with a rematch against #7 Team Deutsch (8-7). Back in their previous match-up against Team Deutsch in Week 4, Team Clark walked away with a forfeit victory.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 4-11

Team Chess and Mathematics could be fully healthy, finally, after the two-week break. If this team is healthy, I’d give them a real shot of securing a top-10 playoff seed. Remember that invigorating feeling around this team after they won two out of three games right before the Holiday break at the end of December? They’re only three games back of #8 Team Purimetla for the North Division crown but they only have three regular season games remaining. Team Chess and Mathematics can make up that ground if they’re healthy and if Team Purimetla slips up over the final three weeks. Crazier things have happened. Unfortunately for Team Chess and Mathematics, they suffered a lopsided defeat on Sunday night to #1 Team Onions by a final score of 98-65. Captain Jones registered 30 points (11-21 FG), five rebounds and four assists in Sunday’s blowout loss to #1 Team Onions. Captain Jones and the rest of Team Chess and Mathematics will need to put this tough loss behind them quickly and focus their attention on #6 Team Maione who are next up on the calendar coming up on Sunday evening. In their previous match-up in Week 4, Team Chess and Mathematics endured a tough 88-78 loss.

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-14

Team High Fiving White Guys did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team in Week 15 and had to take a forfeit loss to #8 Team Purimetla. The loss makes it thirteen in a row for Team High Fiving White Guys and sees their record fall to 1-14. Team High Fiving White Guys will look to snap their thirteen-game losing streak when they take the court in Week 15 against #4 Team Swish House (12-3). These two squads paired up back in Week 4 and Team High Fiving White Guys took a disappointing 88-61 loss.

Team LAMBO – East – 3-12

At 3-12, Team LAMBO isn’t where it’d like to be this late in the season. But don’t expect the disappointing record to result in this team simply laying down and calling it quits. On the contrary, Team LAMBO competes every week and is another team that can pull off some surprises during the final three week stretch. They did drop their second straight game in Week 15, losing to #9 Team Reisner by a final score of 91-69. Captain Brock Massie scored 24 points (10-15 FG) while adding seven rebounds and two assists during Sunday’s loss to #9 Team Reisner. Massie dialed up another twenty-point performance on Sunday afternoon, albeit in defeat. Team LAMBO are going to be pushing hard to improve their playoff seeding over the final three weeks of the regular season and Massie should continue to be a primary focus on the offensive end moving forward. Team LAMBO will look to snap their two-game losing streak coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #5 Team Division 6 (11-4). These two squads previous met back in Week 4 and Team LAMBO suffered a tough 95-74 defeat.

Team Schwartz – North – 4-11

Team Schwartz continues to run out good-looking lineups of Jermaine Johnson, Kyree, Jason Vismantas and Jon Sider, along with Anthony Bernardi, Zachary McMains and Captain Matthew Schwartz — but the effect has not been very positive over the last two months. This squad can put up big points at will but are currently sporting the worst defense in the league (87.4 PAPG). Their defense struggled once again on Sunday afternoon as they took a tough loss to #7 Team Deutsch by a final score of 96-80. This is the second straight week that Team Schwartz has allowed 90+ points. This must improve if they plan on snapping their current seven game losing streak. Kyree and Jermaine Johnson led the way for Team Schwartz in this contest as they combined to score 46 of their squads 80 points on Sunday night. Jason Vismantas managed another fine outing as well for Team Schwartz, dropping 12 points (4-11 FG) while hauling down seven boards. Despite Team Schwartz’s recent struggles, Vismantas is thriving in this squad’s offense. Team Schwartz will look to snap their seven-game losing streak coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #3 Team Wolves (12-3). These two squads paired up back in Week 4 and Team Schwartz suffered a blowout 95-56 defeat.

Week 15 is in the books! Big week coming up on Sunday gentleman!
