2018-19 THE Chicago Hoops Week 4 – (Oct. 28)

By
Updated: November 1, 2018

We’re almost there. Coming up, Week 5 will mark the more than 1/4 mark of the Regular Season (35 of 126 games played), the point when it’s fair to believe in what we’ve seen so far, what teams are good, and what teams need to start piling up some W’s.

As THE CHI Hoops closes the book on Week 4, the standings are starting to make sense. Team Clark is shaking off their early woes and have won their last two ballgames. Team Schwartz’s strong start has turned sour. Team Maione, Team WOLVERINES and TEAM Wolves are all still neck and neck at the top of the League.

We had some parity over the first month this season, and through Sunday (Week 4), there are the same number of teams sitting above the .500 mark as there are sitting below the .500 mark (six each). Over the last couple of weeks, teams have begun to sort themselves out.

Let’s look at where all our Teams sit in the Week 4 Power Rankings…

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Power Rankings

1. Team WOLVERINES – South – 4-0

Team WOLVERINES maintains the top spot in the Rankings after their scrappy 15pt Win over Team Purimetla by a final score of 67-52 on Sunday evening. Mitchell Acox Bouie turned in a solid overall Game with 15 points and 11 boards. Josh Davis, Corey Hutchinson and Bryant Orange all added 10 apiece to help secure the squads very nice Week 4 victory. These guys are just playing great team-basketball right now and it is no surprise that they are standing tall at 4-0. Their Defense is also playing well right now and causing havoc for opposing Offenses. They currently have the League’s best Defense, allowing opposing Teams to score just under 61 PPG. Coming up in Week 5, Team WOLVERINES gets a match-up with a winless Team LAMBO (0-4) squad that will be doing everything in their power to snatch their first victory on the 2018-19 campaign.

2. Team Maione – West – 4-0

Putting Team Maione second isn’t easy. Their record is spectacular at 4-0 following their solid 88-78 Week 4 victory over Team Chess and Mathematics. They have the League’s best Offense, averaging just shy of 97 PPG. Their average margin of victory is sitting at 22 PPG, also best in the League. Matthew Vogrich is someone who people should really familiarize themselves with (if they hadn’t already) as he dropped 32 huge points to lead them in scoring again in Week 4. Andy Timson also had a huge night on Sunday, dropping 29 points to go along with his 13 boards. These two have been tremendous so far this season for #2 Team Maione and are a huge reason why they are still undefeated through the first four weeks. Coming up in Week 5, these guys take on Team Deutsch (0-4) in a re-match from our Summer Hoops Championship Game. Should be another Classic!

3. Team Wolves – East – 4-0

Our Week 4 Game of the Week didn’t quite pan out as we may have thought, as #3 Team Wolves blew past new #8 Team Schwartz by a final score of 95-56. With this huge Week 4 victory, they stayed undefeated and will look to make it five wins in a row coming up on Sunday night. Joe Kozak had 26 to go along with 9 boards to lead them in scoring and in the rebounding department. Four other players (Boris Cayemitte, Rodney Metellus, Romeo MaGlore and Chris McNichols) all reached double digit scoring efforts in this contest for Team Wolves. Again, this group has just such great depth and can hurt you from multiple places on the court…they really have it all. They’ll take part in their third straight Game of the Week coming up in Week 5 when they take the court against #6 Team Onions (3-1)!

4. Team Swish House – East – 3-1

Team Swish House got another W on Sunday evening, getting them to 3-1 on the year. They beat Team High Fiving White Guys by a final count of 88-61. Cory Starkey supplied 22 points on 71% shooting from the field to go along with his team leading 11 boards. Just another trademark stat line from the veteran Team Swish House player. Cory has stepped up huge this season in the absence of last year’s League MVP, Sterling Williams. Breck Mahoney had a strong Game as well in this contest, chipping in 18 points to go along with 4 boards and 6 assists. Team Swish House can put up big numbers on any given Sunday and are currently tied for second in the League in PPG, averaging 90.5. They take on a tough #9 Team Purimetla (1-3) squad coming up in Week 5 that will try to prevent them from getting to 4-1.

5. Team Division 6 – South – 3-1

Just another day at the office for one of the League’s highest scoring players, Eric Porter. Porter scored 36 points (Week 4 League high point total) while adding 2 rebounds to go along with seven assists during Sunday’s 95-74 win over Team LAMBO. Porter has been unstoppable so far this season, averaging just shy of 33 points, 4.25 assists and 6 rebounds per game. Not coincidentally, Team Division 6 has now ripped off two straight victories and sees their record sit at 3-1. Johnny Vernasco also had a very solid game on Sunday night, just missing a triple double with 7 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. This squad has been playing fantastic basketball so far this season and if it weren’t for their Week 2 loss to the defending Champs by 2-points, would easily be sitting in the Top-3. Team Division 6 will try to make it 3 Wins in a row when they take the court in Week 5 against Team Chess and Mathematics (0-4).

6. Team Onions – West – 3-1

Team Onions is playing as well as any other team in the League right now. They have always shown the ability to do this in past CSSC Leagues, but they have put together a great stretch in this first month of THE CHI Hoops League. Their record now sits at 3-1 following their very solid victory over Team Reisner by a final score of 68-58 on Sunday Night. Ryan Coyle led the way for Team Onions in this one with 21 points to go along with 4 rebounds and a couple of assists. Dan O’Brian had 13 and Andy Stemple scored 12. Mike Marietti was also in double digit figures as he pitched in with 11 of his own. These guys have one of the most balanced rosters in the entire League as they have six different players averaging at least 12 PPG. They’ll look to build on their current 2-game winning streak coming up in Week 5. They’ll take the court against #3 Team Wolves (4-0) in our Week 5 Game of the Week!

7. Team Clark – East – 2-2

Moving all the way up into the #7 spot in the Week 4 Power Rankings is non-other than Team Clark following their Week 4 forfeit victory over Team Deutsch as Team Deutsch did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team. #7 Team Clark will try to make it 3 Wins in a row and continue their rise in our Power Rankings coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against Team High Fiving White Guys (1-3).

8. Team Schwartz – North – 2-2

Team Schwartz had had to take on the #2 and #3 ranked squads in back-to-back weeks and have suffered losses in both games. By the final score of 95-56, Team Schwartz took their second straight defeat on Sunday afternoon to #3 Team Wolves and see their record fall to 2-2 on the year. Austin Brown finished with 28 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists during Sundays loss to Team Wolves. Brown led all scorers in this contest with 28 points but did take 24 field-goal attempts to get there. His 24 attempts were 5 more than the next best of 19, taken by Jason Vismantas. Team Schwartz has certainly been far from fruitful when it comes to scoring options with the absence of David Carson II the last few weeks, leaving Brown with a bright green light no matter the efficiency concerns. Team Schwartz will look to get back on track in Week 5 when they take the court against #10 Team Reisner (1-3).

9. Team Purimetla – North – 1-3

Moving down one spot in the Week 4 Power Rankings following their 67-52 loss on Sunday night to Team WOLVERINES, is Team Purimetla. They really struggled to get it going on the Offensive end of the court in this contest, putting up their lowest scoring effort so far this season. To be fair, they did go up against the best ranked Defense in the League. Two of the squads leading scorers on the year, Adam Jones and Dominique Arrington, really struggled with their shots on Sunday night, combining to score 20 points on 8-22 shooting from the field. They’ll need to put these back-to-back losses behind them quickly as the schedule does not get much easier in Week 5. They’ll have to take the court against another Top-5 ranked team coming up on Sunday night when they welcome #4 Team Swish House (3-1) to the DePaul Ray Meyer Center.

10. Team Reisner – South – 1-3

Team Reisner dropped a tough game to #6 Team Onions by a final score of 68-58 on Sunday Night. As a result, they drop down one spot and into the #10 hole in the Week 4 Power Rankings. Tyler Max led the way for Team Reisner in this Game, scoring 18 points while grabbing 2 boards and dishing out 4 assists. Andrew Marks also had a HUGE day on the glass, snatching down a league high 16 boards in Week 4. Team Reisner was without the services of their leading scorer on Sunday night, Marin Kukoc, and it certainly showed as Team Reisner put up their second lowest scoring output on the year. This one will sting for a bit since they knew they had their chances in this game, but they’ll have to get over it quickly and look to pick up their 2nd W of the Season in Week 5. They’ll take on #8 Team Schwartz (2-2) coming up on Sunday night who will also be coming in on a little two game losing skid.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 0-4

Okay let’s get a restart here for Team Chess and Mathematics. Just start 0-0 and everything else will take care of itself. Their fourth straight defeat came at the hands of #2 Team Maione on Sunday night by a final count of 88-78. They came into this contest a little shorthanded as they only had five available bodies for this one. Their depth, or lack thereof, has been their Achilles heal so far this year. On a positive note, all five of their starters hit double digit scoring figures in this one, led by Garret Staniec’s huge 18-point, 11 rebound and 6 assist performance. Captain Gilles had an off night according to his standards, scoring 15 points on only 6-17 shooting from the field. Cannan Blair, Darek Wojewnik and Ron Nandi combined to score 45 in this one. It was unfortunately just not enough to keep pace with the highest scoring Team in the League through the first 4 weeks. They have another tough game coming up in Week 5 when they take the court against #5 Team Division 6 (3-1).

Team Deutsch – South – 0-4

Team Deutsch did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team on Sunday afternoon and had to take a forfeit loss to #7 Team Clark. The loss makes it four in a row for Team Deutsch to start their 2018-19 campaign. They’ll look to snag their first victory on the year coming up in Week 5 when they take on #2 Team Maione (4-0) in a re-match from our Summer Hoops Championship Game.

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-3

Matthew Clark compiled 24 points to go along with 5 boards and a couple of assists during Sundays 88-61 loss to #4 Team Swish House. Clark had arguably his best game of the season in Week 4, but it unfortunately was just not enough to get past a very good Team Swish House crew. James Holman also pitched in with 15 points, while Maxwell Davidson added 12 points of his own for Team High Fiving White Guys. These guys had such a strong Week 2 and it seemed as if they had been able to take “the leap” but have since dropped two consecutive ball games by an average defeat of 36 points. They still can get there this season, but they are certainly in the middle of a rough patch right now. They’ll look to turn it all around coming up in Week 5 when they tip off against #7 Team Clark (2-2).

Team LAMBO – East – 0-4

For what seems like the first time in their long and illustrious history, Team LAMBO is off to a rough start to their 2018-19 campaign. They are 0-4 to start the Season and while it’s not time to hit the panic button, it does show just how deep the League has gotten for this Season. They fell to All Sports Series newcomers, Team Division 6 by a final score of 95-74 on Sunday Night. Again, nothing to worry about yet, but they need to start playing like we know they can before they dig a whole too big to dig out of. The squads leading scorer through the first 4 games, Jeff Dirkin, led the way once again in Week 4 with a very nice 28-point, 11 rebound and 4 assist performance. Tim Brennan also had a solid all-around game, dropping 22 points to go along with 3 boards and 3 assists. They look to tally their first W in the win column this Sunday Night against #1 and defending Champs, Team WOLVERINES (4-0).

Almost ¼ through the Regular Season! Good luck to all in Week 5!
