2018-19 THE Chicago Hoops Week 5 – (Nov. 04)

By
Updated: November 8, 2018

We just crept past the 1/4 mark of the season (we’re about 28 percent done with the regular season), when all teams have played 5 games and the standings start to hold some significance. Some teams are still in early-season mode, trying to figure things out on one end of the floor or the other. Three squads are still desperately searching for that first win, while some have certainly hit their stride.

Before we go any further, we need to send a special shout out to Team Division 6’s Eric Porter who put up a cool FIFTY-THREE points on Sunday Night!

Moving along, the defending Champs, Team WOLVERINES have won 5 straight games, one of their best starts ever. They’ve shown remarkable resilience in the face of some adversity and some feisty teams that want to put that streak to an end.

But Team WOLVERINES aren’t the only team that’s streaking. Entering Week 6, Team Maione and Team Wolves have also won five straight games to begin their 2018-19 campaign.

Team WOLVERINES have built their streak on defense, while Team Maione and Team Wolves have been stronger on offense. Team Swish House (who have quietly started 4-1), meanwhile, have been elite on both ends of the floor over the last two weeks.

I have a funny feeling one of these streaks will end this week as we have juicy matchups on the slate coming up in Week 6…easily the most anticipated Week of the season thus far.

Quickly, for those Playing in their first All Sports Series League.. Here’s what to expect from the weekly Power Rankings.. Each week we’ll take a statistical look at the Teams and Rank them 1-10 with the UnRanked Teams listed alphabetically.. Also, if you have ever want to find any info on the League.. Power Rankings

1. Team WOLVERINES – South – 5-0

Four of the five squads that Team WOLVERINES have faced so far this season have sub .500 records. Some may say that they’ve lucked out with the schedule so far. And that may be true, but the fact of the matter is that you can only beat those that are in front of you. And that my friends are what Team WOLVERINES are continuing to do. They just keep winning. By the final count of 90-73, Team WOLVERINES picked up their fifth consecutive victory and beat Team LAMBO on Sunday afternoon to maintain the #1 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. They had 4 guys in double figures, headlined by Josh Davis’s 21 and Mitchell Acox Bouie’s 18. They now have a very difficult 3-week stretch coming up on their schedule as their next 3 opponents have a combined 12-3 record. First things first however as they’ll look to make it 6 straight out of the gate on Sunday against #7 Team Onions (3-2).

2. Team Maione – West – 5-0

Team Maione not only picked up their fifth straight win on Sunday night, they also exacted some much-needed revenge against the same squad that stripped them from their Summer Hoops title dreams, Team Deutsch. By the final score of 96-86, Team Maione was not going to be denied this time around and secured their #2 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. Another big storyline in this game was the Deutsch brothers from Team Deutsch going against brother Brad on Team Maione. Captain Brad would not let Team Maione be denied and contributed a very solid 21-points to go along with 7 assists and 7 boards. He only trailed Joe Duffy in the scoring department as Joe led the way in this contest for Team Maione, dropping a huge 32-point performance. These guys have had a great start to their season but coming up in Week 6 they will get arguably their toughest test yet as they take on #5 Team Division 6 (4-1) and the highest scoring player in the league, Eric Porter. This will undoubtedly be our Week 6 Game of the Week!

3. Team Wolves – East – 5-0

Team Wolves stays in the #3 spot following their very important 81-74 W over former #6 Team Onions in what was a great battle in our Week 5 Game of the Week. Joe Kozak, the squads leading scorer, once again dominated in this one for Team Wolves, supplying 19 points while pulling down 8 boards. Team Wolves can at any moment score in bunches and really get after it on Defense. That’s a recipe for Winning. But, for weeks now I’ve been a little reluctant to put Team Wolves in the WOLVERINES-Maione orbit. ‎Not an easy thing to admit when they just won their fifth straight game to open their 2018-19 season. Then, as I think back to last season, didn’t Team Wolves open with a record setting 14-straight victories? So, it’s probably time, in other words, for the Committee to have a long talk with itself. They’ll look to make it 6 straight coming up on Sunday night when they take the floor against Team Deutsch (0-5).

4. Team Swish House – East – 4-1

Team Swish House have now secured back-to-back victories for a second time this season, beating Team Purimetla 91-57 on Sunday afternoon to see their record rise to a very solid 4-1. Their lone Loss came in Week 3 to Undefeated #3 Team Wolves. I think it’s safe to say these guys are playing well out of the gate. Sterling Williams, Cory Starky and Captain Michael Halusek each had 20+ points on Sunday Night to lead their squad to this lopsided Week 5 victory. Breck Mahoney pitched in with 11 points of his own to help in the winning cause. Team Swish House are just so deep and have so many scoring options, while at the same time make their opponent’s lives miserable while on the defensive end of the court. Next up is #9 Team Schwartz (2-3) who is reeling a bit, dropping 3 straight games. Very important Week for both squads coming up but Team Swish House should be able to get to 5-1.

5. Team Division 6 – South – 4-1

Team Division 6 picked up their fourth victory in five games on Sunday Night and this one came at the expense of Team Chess and Mathematics. Oh, and they won by 21 AND scored 113 as a Team. Team Division 6 is good folks. Really good. Doesn’t hurt that future All-Star Eric Porter scored FIFTY-THREE! With that huge 53 burger, Mr. Porter takes his league leading scoring average to just under 37 PPG. Captain Billy Kirby chipped in with 24 while Xavier Edwards added 23 of his own. Johnny Vernasco also contributed with 11 to help secure this very nice Week 5 victory. That is a LOT of points from your top-4 scorers. Even if you wiped away Porter’s 53, that would be a very strong top-3. Coming up in Week 6, Team Division 6 will try to get to 5-1 and shake up the Top-5 of the Power Rankings when they take the floor against undefeated #2 Team Maione (5-0) in our Week 6 Game of the Week!

6. Team Clark – East – 3-2

What a difference a short couple of weeks’ make. Team Clark started off 0-2 but they have since been able to shake off the slow start and have rattled off three straight Wins. Bringing their record up over the .500 mark for the first time this season by beating Team High Fiving White Guys 79-70, Team Clark now hops into the #6 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. Captain Rodney went off for 33 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists to lead his crew to this big Week 5 Win. Michael Maidin and Jeffery Godwin combined to score 36 to shoulder much of the scoring burden for Team Clark against Team High Fiving White Guys in their close 9-point victory on Sunday. They’ll look to make it 4 wins in a row against #10 Team Purimetla (1-4) in Week 6.

7. Team Onions – West – 3-2

Team Onions suffered their second Loss of the Season at the hands of #3 Team Wolves on Sunday afternoon. Joel Pennington had 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for Team Onions in this one. While Team Onions lost the game 81-74, Pennington had another strong game as he continues to look like the #1 option in this very deep squad. Michael Schultz, Mike Marietti and Andy Stemple had 14, 13 and 12 respectively. They just didn’t get the stops that they needed on the Defensive end in this one and it ultimately ended up costing them the victory. They are still a very good Team, and those good Teams tend to bounce back quickly after tough losses like this. You can expect that from them here. And they’ll need to put this Loss in the rear-view mirror ASAP because next up on the calendar coming up in Week 6 is a date with the Defending Champs and undefeated #1 Team WOLVERINES (5-0).

8. Team Reisner – South – 2-3

Moving up two spots in the Week 5 Power Rankings is former #10 Team Reisner following their 68-63 thriller with #9 Team Schwartz on Sunday afternoon. Team Reisner got their 2nd Win of the Season on Sunday Night on the backs of Marin Kukoc and Brad Tivin who combined to score 43 of their squads 68 total points. Team Reisner was fantastic on the defensive end of the court once again on Sunday, holding Team Schwartz to their second lowest point total so far this season. Team Reisner has the second-best ranked defense in the league through the first five games of the season, allowing only 68.6 PPG. This D will win them many games this year, but they’ll need to figure out some things on the Offensive end of the court as they currently rank dead last in total Offense, averaging just 59.8 PPG. They’ll look to improve this Offense and continue to dominate on Defense coming up in Week 6 when they take the court against Team High Fiving White Guys (1-4).

9. Team Schwartz – North – 2-3

Team Schwartz isn’t getting any easier to understand, folks. They came out of the gates looking great at 2-0 and now on three consecutive Sundays have lost to see their record dip to 2-3. What a difference a year makes. At this point last year, they were sitting at 4-1 and looking rock solid. One player who has been rock solid for Team Schwartz this year has been Jermaine Johnson. Mr. Johnson supplied 22 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists in his squads 68-63 loss to #8 Team Reisner on Sunday afternoon. Jason Vismantas had 17 and Kyree chipped in with 13. They just didn’t get much else going Offensively in this one as they posted their second lowest scoring effort so far this season. #stumped. Coming up on Sunday afternoon, Team Schwartz will look to get back on track and get their record back to the .500 mark when they take the court against a very tough #4 Team Swish House (4-1).

10. Team Purimetla – North – 1-4

Team Purimetla fell on Sunday Night to #4 Team Swish House and it was a Game that they’d rather forget, losing 91-57. Adam Jones did have a nice Game with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists but in general it was just not one of their better Games. Captain Pete Purimetla, Muraner Milic and Adam Rhum combined to score 23, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace with a hot shooting Team Swish House squad. Team Purimetla is normally as good as it gets on the Defensive end, but they allowed 91 on Sunday (their most allowed this season). We need to see if this was just a one game slip up Defensively or if this is something that may turn into a norm. They look to bounce back and snap their two-game losing streak against a streaking #6 Team Clark (3-2) crew.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 0-5

You know it’s a tough start to the year when you put up 92 points and still lose by more than 20 points. That’s what unfortunately happened to Team Chess and Mathematics in Week 5. By the final score of 113-92, Team Chess and Mathematics dropped their fifth straight game to begin their 2018-19 campaign. Captain Gilles Jones had a monster performance in Week 5 in his squads losing effort, dropping 38 monstrous points to go along with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Team Chess and Mathematics has a top-flight Roster and are just not seeing the results we are used to seeing out of them thus far this season. Their issues have mostly come on the Defensive end where they are ranked last in the League for Points Against Per Game (86.4). That means they need incredible Offensive performances each week to Win and it’s just not happening right now. They need to treat the first 5 weeks as “pre-season” and just start over from 0-0. They’ll try to hit the reset button coming up on Sunday afternoon when they tip off against Team LAMBO (0-5).

Team Deutsch – South – 0-5

Is it time to hit the panic button yet on Team Deutsch? 0-5 to start the season following their 96-86 loss on Sunday to #2 Team Maione. Reilly O’Toole led the way with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists during Sundays defeat to Team Maione. Captain Justin and brother Brian combined to score 37 to try to lift their guys to victory but it just wasn’t enough to get past a determined and right now unstoppable, #2 Team Maione. Just like Team Chess and Mathematics above, Team Deutsch has a top-flight Roster and are just not seeing the results we are used to seeing out of them thus far in 2018-19. The scheduling Gods do not feel sorry for anyone as they have dealt Team Deutsch another extremely tough test on Sunday evening, as they’ll welcome #3 Team Wolves (5-0) to the Ray Meyer Rec Center. Now is the time to turn it around.

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-4

Team High Fiving White Guys fell by just nine points against #6 Team Clark on Sunday Night in a Game that was certainly winnable. They just needed an extra bounce or two to go their way. Unfortunately, lady luck was not on their side on Sunday evening and Team High Fiving White Guys dropped their fourth game in five tries to start their 2018-19 campaign. Maxwell Davidson had one of his best games so far this year, supplying 20 points while pulling down 6 boards in his squads 79-70 loss to #6 Team Clark. Matthew Clark and Nicholas Schneider combined to score 29. These guys have the talent on the roster to turn this thing around, they just need to see one go their way. All it takes is one and then anything can happen from there. They’ll look to snap their current 3-game losing skid coming up on Sunday Night when they take on #8 Team Reisner (2-3).

Team LAMBO – East – 0-5

For Team LAMBO, they can look above to the Team Deutsch and Team Chess and Mathematics (who they play in Week 6) and basically take the same message…They need to forget about the last 5 Games. Treat it as if it hasn’t happened and focus on the 13 Games they still must play. Joe had 31 and provided the outside shooting they had been missing without him, but it still wasn’t enough to defeat #1 Team WOLVERINES on Sunday as Team LAMBO fell 90-73. Captain Brock did what he has been doing all year, contributing a solid stat line of 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. They are playing well on Offense, but the Defense is a completely different story as they are allowing 86 PPG and that is just not a sustainable way to earn W’s in this League. They’ll look to turn it around in Week 6 against Team Chess and Mathematics (0-5) in a match-up that will give one of these squads their first taste of victory on the 2018-19 campaign.

Officially past the quarter mark! Good luck to all in Week 6!
