2018-19 THE Chicago Hoops Week 8 – (Dec. 02)

By
Updated: December 7, 2018

Believe it or not, we’re almost halfway there.

THE Chi Hoops league will reach the midway point of the season (63 of 126 games) when the Week 9 games coming up on Sunday afternoon are completed. For some teams, it may feel like the season is ONLY halfway there. For others, it may feel like the season has just gotten started.

Looking over THE Chi Hoops standings, it may elicit the feeling that we should just get the playoffs started right now. In the Eastern Divison, there’s a clear top two (Team Swish House and Team Wolves), with Team Clark and Team LAMBO seemingly running out of time to make a serious run for that Division crown. In the Western Division, Team Maione/Team Onions are neck and neck almost at the midway point, with Team High Fiving White Guys facing a very tough uphill battle to make it a three-headed race.

In the South Division, only three games now separate the Division leaders (Team Wolverines) from Team Deutsch, who about a month ago, looked to be down and out for the count. In the North Division, Team Schwartz has a nice two game lead, but Team Chess and Mathematics and Team Purimetla have no interest in letting their Division crown dreams from dying.

Most teams are exactly who they’ve been over their first 8 games. But I’m sure as Team Deutsch would tell you, things can change in the second half of the season on the drop of a dime (no pun intended). Maybe another remarkable turnaround will get started this week.

Power Rankings

1. Team Swish House – East – 7-1

Team Swish House continue to make the case for their spot at No. 1 spot, especially with their impressive 66-63 victory over Team WOLVERINES on Sunday night in our Week 8 Game of the Week. Cory Starkey continues to make a case for his All-Star spot, dropping 22 points, grabbing 7 rebounds and dishing out 3 assists in his squads crucial Week 8 victory over Team WOLVERINES. Cory is now averaging just over 22 PPG, 8.2 RPG and 3.2 APG through the first 8 weeks of the season. Jonathon Dues and Breck Mahoney also had solid performances on Sunday night as both players pitched in with 11 points apiece to help lift their squad to their fifth straight victory. Team Swish House is currently sporting the longest winning streak in the league and will look to make it six straight Wins coming up in Week 9 when they take the court against Team Chess and Mathematics (2-6).

2. Team Wolves – East – 7-1

Team Wolves have now won back-to-back ballgames after taking a disappointing loss in Week 6 to Team Deutsch. Rodney Metellus put 19 points on the board while pulling down an impressive 9 rebounds against Team High Fiving White Guys in his squads very solid 85-63 victory on Sunday night. Joe Kozak led Team Wolves in scoring once again in this victory, dropping 24 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Romeo MaGlore, Joe Murray and Jordan Stevens combined to put up 37 points to help seal Team Wolves second consecutive victory. Team Wolves are now sitting at 7-1 with their Week 8 victory now in the books and move up into the #2 spot in the Week 8 Power Rankings as a result. Team Wolves can’t celebrate this victory for too long however as they have a crucial match-up against #3 Team Maione (6-2) coming up on Sunday night in our Week 9 Game of the Week!

3. Team Maione – West – 6-2

Team Maione came into Week 8 sporting a two-game losing skid but walked out of the DePaul Ray Meyer Center with their 6th victory on the year. By the final score of 92-73, Team Maione cruised passed a tough #8 Team Reisner squad to move up into the #3 hole in the Week 8 Power Rankings. Matthew Vogrich continued to build on his stellar 2018-19 campaign, exploding for a season-high 37 points on Sunday afternoon, adding six rebounds and a couple of assists in a gem of a performance. Blake McLimans also had a very nice game, producing 23 points, four assists and grabbing a board during Sunday’s 19-point victory over Team Reisner. McLimans took a backseat to the Matthew Vogrich show in Week 8, but still managed a fantastic game to help break his squads little losing skid. They’ll look to make it two in a row coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #2 Team Wolves (7-1) in our Week 9 Game of the Week!

4. Team Onions – West – 6-2

The hottest team in the league right now, aside from Team Swish House and Team Deutsch, is non-other than #4 Team Onions. Their 85-74 win on Sunday afternoon against Team LAMBO was the true definition of what a Team Win is. All seven of their available players made their way on the scorer’s sheet with not even one of them contributing less than six points. Andy Stemple recorded 19 points and three assists in Sunday’s victory but didn’t do much outside of scoring, albeit he did lead the team in that department. Brian Nelms was only able to chip in with 7 points on 3-9 shooting from the field but did some serious damage in other departments as he was able to haul down 12 boards and dished out 8 assists. These guys are so complimentary to one another, no wonder they are at top-5 team right now. Team Onions will look to continue to build on their fantastic 2018-19 season when they take the court on Sunday night against #6 Team Division 6 (5-3).

5. Team WOLVERINES – South – 6-2

Falling from the #2 spot and into the #5 hole in the Week 8 Power Rankings is the defending Champions, Team Wolverines, following their 66-63 loss to #1 Team Swish House on Sunday night. Captain Randall Hampton produced his second straight 26-point performance and led all scorers during Sunday’s loss over Team Swish House, but he along with the rest of the Team WOLVERINES crew struggled down stretch and could not pull out an important victory. This is one that Team WOLVERINES would sooner forget as they scored just 63 points, their lowest scoring output thus far this season. The good news for Team WOLVERINES is that they just wrapped up a brutal three-game stretch in which they played opponents who have a combined .792 winning percentage. They’ll look to get back on track in Week 9 as their next three opponents on the other hand have a combined .333 winning percentage. First up is #7 Team Schwartz (4-4) coming up on Sunday afternoon.

6. Team Division 6 – South – 5-3

Following their 5-1 start to their 2018-19 campaign, Team Division 6 have now dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season in the wake of their 83-72 loss on Sunday afternoon to #8 Team Schwartz. With this loss, Team Division 6 sees their overall record drop to 5-3 and fall into the #6 spot in the Week 8 Power Rankings. Team Division 6 was without the services of their and the leagues leading scorer, Eric Porter for this one, and he was surely missed as Team Division 6 produced their lowest scoring output on the year. Billy Kirby picked up the scoring for Team Division 6 in Mr. Porter’s absence in this one, finishing with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists during Sundays 11-point loss to Team Schwartz. Kirby had a season high in rebounds as he continues to produce big numbers for Team Division 6. Team Division 6 will look to get back on track and snap their two-game losing streak coming up on Sunday afternoon when they tip-off against #4 Team Onions (6-2).

7. Team Schwartz – North – 4-4

If we were to do a Player of the Week award, no player would be more deserving this week than Jermaine Johnson of Team Schwartz. Mr. Johnson posted a season high 35 points (16-33 FG), 15 rebounds and 11 assists in Sunday’s 83-72 win over #6 Team Division 6. After going six games without a triple-double, Johnson got back to his ways Sunday night, registering a monster night in the win, including season highs in points, rebounds and assists. Mr. Johnson has certainly picked things up of late, having recorded at least 17 points in his last four games. The win brings Team Schwartz’s record back up to the .500 mark at 4-4 and sees them move up into the #7 spot in the Week 8 Power Rankings. Mr. Johnson and Team Schwartz will look to build on their current two-game winning streak coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the floor against #5 Team WOLVERINES (6-2).

8. Team Reisner – South – 4-4

Team Reisner’s’ three-game winning streak came to a screeching halt on Sunday night as they took a tough defeat to #3 Team Maione by a final score of 92-73. Marin Kukoc led the way for Team Reisner posting 22 points, two rebounds and four assists during Sundays 19-point loss to #3 Team Maione. Tyler Max and Sam Gage also played well in this contest for Team Reisner, scoring 18 and 17 respectively to keep Team Reisner within striking distance of a very solid and high scoring Team Maione crew. Their loss to Team Maione on Sunday snapped a short-lived win streak that could have given them the boost they needed before heading into the holiday break in a couple of weeks. The loss also drops Team Reisner’s record to 4-4 on the year but they’ll look to get back over the .500 mark coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #10 Team Clark (3-5).

9. Team Deutsch – South – 3-5

Moving up into the #9 spot in the Week 8 Power Rankings is non-other than Team Deutsch following their Week 8 forfeit victory over Team Purimetla as Team Purimetla did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team on Sunday afternoon. That now makes it three wins in a row for Team Deutsch following their 0-5 start to the season. Outside of #1 Team Swish House and #4 Team Onions, there is no hotter team in the league right now than Team Deutsch. #9 Team Deutsch will try to make it four Wins in a row and continue their steady rise in our Power Rankings coming up on Sunday night when they take the court against a Team High Fiving White Guys (1-7) squad that will be looking to do everything in their power to snap their current 6-game losing streak.

10. Team Clark – East – 3-5

Jeffery Godwin finished with a season-high 29 points (11-26 FG) and added seven rebounds and a couple of assists on Sunday night in Team Clark’s 89-57 blowout loss to Team Chess and Mathematics. Aside from a three-point stinker against Team Purimetla in Week 6, Godwin has been rolling for the better part of the year, averaging 15.8 PPG, 3.4 RPG and 2.6 APG in his five games played. Team Clark have now dropped three straight games — so what’s the problem? Team Clark has been bad defensively, allowing 89.5 points per game in those three losses. Team Clark will look to improve on the defensive end of the court and snap their three-game losing skid coming up on Sunday afternoon when they take the court against #8 Team Reisner (4-4).

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team Chess and Mathematics – North – 2-6

After suffering a tough loss to Team Reisner in Week 7, Team Chess and Mathematics were able to roll past Team Clark on Sunday night. Darek Wojewnik posted a season-high 29 points (11-18 FG), three rebounds and three assists in Team Chess and Mathematics 89-57 blowout victory over Team Clark on Sunday night. Mr. Wojewnik spearheaded the Team Chess and Mathematics attack on a night when they had three other players post double digit scoring efforts. The 89 points scored was the highest scoring output Team Chess and Mathematics produced in over a month. They’ll look to build on this very solid team victory coming up on Sunday afternoon when they tip-off against the #1 ranked team in the league, Team Swish House (7-1).

Team High Fiving White Guys – West – 1-7

Team High Fiving White Guys are in free fall right now, having lost six straight games and 7 of 8 to start their 2018-19 campaign. They are struggling on both sides of the ball right now: During the losing streak, Team High Fiving White Guys are averaging 64.9 points per game while giving up 84.4 points per game. Michael Porter did everything he could do on Sunday night to help Team High Fiving White Guys snap their current six game losing skid, producing a season high 26 points to go along with eight rebounds and a couple of assists. Nicholas Schneider also dropped a season high 17 points for Team High Fiving White Guys, but it just wasn’t enough as Team High Fiving White guys lost to #2 Team Wolves by a final score of 85-63. They’ll need to just get back to the basics coming up in Week 9 against Team Deutsch (3-5) and the W’s will surely start to roll in.

Team LAMBO – East – 0-8

Team LAMBO put up a fight Sunday night, battling Team Onions for the full 44-minutes, but eventually lost, 85-74. Brock Massie tied his season high point total on Sunday afternoon, dropping 28 points (11-23 FG), ten rebounds and four assists in Team LAMBO’s 11-point loss to Team Onions. Massie led all scorers in this contest and was able to produce his second double-double of the season. Massie continues to churn out stellar stat lines on a weekly basis for Team LAMBO and has now scored at least 21 points in four consecutive ball games. It’s certainly been a tough ride thus far for Team LAMBO through the first 8 weeks of the season, but they still have plenty of time to turn this ship around. They’ll just need to take it one game at a time and things will start to turn for them. Their next opportunity comes on Sunday night when they take the floor against Team Purimetla (2-6).

Team Purimetla – North – 2-6

Team Purimetla did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team in Week 8 and had to take a forfeit loss to #9 Team Deutsch. The loss makes it two in a row for Team Purimetla and sees their record fall to 2-6. They’ll look to get back on track and pick up their third victory on the season coming up in Week 9 when they take on a win-less Team LAMBO (0-8) crew.

Almost at the midway point gentleman. Good luck to all in Week 9!
