2018 Bloomington Hoops – Week 2 (Feb. 11)

By
Updated: February 16, 2018

We got back to action post-Super Bowl break on Sunday evening for Week 2 of the Bloomington Hoops League! When the dust settled, we had four teams that were left undefeated, four teams at 1-1 and four teams that are still winless on the 2018 campaign. Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) have had to forfeit their first two games this season, which didn’t happen at all last season. They’ll have a big hole to climb out of but still have four regular season games remaining to make some noise prior to the playoffs beginning. Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz), meanwhile, have won two very solid games to start their 2018 campaign and move up into the #1 spot in the Week 2 Power Rankings. It has certainly been an interesting start to the season! In the grand scheme of things, odds are none of that matters though. Teams rarely look the same in January/February as they do in April. But as far as early-season power rankings are concerned, it matters a great deal. On to our Week 2 Power Rankings…

Power Rankings

1. Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) – 2-0

A week after picking up a very solid victory on opening night against Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard), Team Delta Chi picked up their second win in a row on the young season and move up to the #1 spot in the Week 2 Power Rankings. Team Delta Chi JR recorded another solid win on Sunday night by the score of 65-56 over Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz), to remain unbeaten this year. They really brought it in this game, topping their opening night point total. Luke Hallett had a quality showing to lead the club’s Offense with 17 points, while Adam J Swails scored 16 points to help seal the victory. Next up for Team Delta Chi is a showdown against Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) (0-2), who will be looking to pick up their first win on the 2018 season.

2. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) – 2-0

Team Sammy SR, led by captain Jack O Keefe, came into Week 2 as underdogs (even though they had a better record) as they had a battle scheduled with one of the titans of the Bloomington League – Team ZBT – who has finished 2nd a couple of times in the “All Sports” leagues in Bloomington. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you want to look at it), Team ZBT SR had to take the forfeit loss as they did not have enough players to field a legal team on Sunday night. The win takes Team Sammy SR’s record to 2-0 and sets up a trilling match-up in Week 3 against #3 and undefeated Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice). This will be our Week 3 Game of the Week!

3. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) – 2-0

Moving up from the #5 spot in Week 1 to the #3 spot in Week 2 is non-other than Teams Evans Scholar SO, who are led by their team captain, Justuss Boice. Team Evans Scholar SO dominated Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) on Sunday night. They got a bashing tally in the win column by the final score of 83-40, to remain undefeated on this young season. These guys really brought it in this game, scoring the most points of any team in Week 2 (that had a legal game). Alexander Bunce had a quality performance with 23 huge points and Grant Dodenhoff also chipped in with 21 points to help bring this squad their second straight win. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe), who are also undefeated and 2-0, are next on the calendar for Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) in what will be our Week 3 Game of the Week!

4. Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) – 2-0

Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) got a very respectable tally in the win column on Sunday evening by the final score of 63-53, to remain unbeaten on the 2018 season. Matthew Schultheis had a strong performance to help earn the team the win with 19 points and Ryan Ruff accounted for 14 more. These two guys accounted for more than half of their team points! Impressive performances from these fellas. The win also leaves Team Delts JR in the #4-hole of the Week 2 Power Rankings heading into Week 3. Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) (0-2) are next on the calendar for Team Delts JR as they will look to make it three wins in a row and try to keep that 0 in the loss column.

5. Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) – 1-1

After a dominating performance in Week 1, Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) came back down to earth in Week 2 as they struggled to get it going on offense against their fellow housemates, netting almost 30 fewer points than their total from Week 1. By a final score of 63-53, Team Delts SO took their first loss on the season as they could not slow down their JR class counterparts. The loss pushes them down to the #5 spot in our Week 2 Power Rankings. Even in a losing effort, Nolan Delaney had a nice game to lead the group’s Offense with 17 points, while Benjamin Feldman netted 15 points. For Team Delts SO, they will have a battle with Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) (0-2) in Week 3 as they try to rebound from this tough loss.

6. Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) – 1-1

Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) got a big W on Sunday night, their first of the season. They were paired up in Week 2 with Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy), who was also coming off a Week 1 loss, and were able to leave Twin Lakes with a 63-51 victory. Raymond Riley played his first game on Sunday night after missing Week 1 and had a gigantic performance to lead the club’s Offense with 26 points. The 26 is the highest point total by any player so far this season. It wasn’t all about Raymond Riley as Bento also chipped in with 16 points to help seal their first victory this season. Team Delts SR will attempt to get into the Top 5 in the Week 3 Power Rankings with another W this week. Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) (1-1) are next on the schedule for Team Delts SR who will also be looking to snatch their second victory on the season. Big game for both squads.

7. Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) – 1-1

Getting to 1-1 was a whole lot easier than expected. They’ll take it! Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) forfeited to Team Kappa Sig JR in Week 2 as they did not have enough available players to field a legal team. The win brings Team Kappa Sig’s record to .500 at 1-1 and they’ll look to keep the momentum rolling from this big first victory. Next up this week is a showdown with Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) (1-1) who will also be looking to grab their second consecutive victory. A W here can move the winners into the top 5 of the Week 3 Power Rankings and a loss here can drop the losers completely out of the Week 3 Power Rankings. Important match-up for both teams.

8. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) – 1-1

Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) forfeited to Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) on Sunday night as they did not have enough available players to field a legal team. The loss drops their record to 1-1 and moves them down into the #8 spot in the Week 2 Power Rankings. For Team ZBT SR, next on the calendar is Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) (0-2). They will have to regroup and shake off this loss quickly if they want to get back into the win column on Sunday.

9. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) – 0-2

Back to back losses have now dropped Team AEPi SO and captain Blake Schwartz’s record to 0-2 on the season. Losing 65-56 to Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) is not something to be ashamed about however. For the second week in a row, Team AEPi SO were matched up against a JR class team and held their own in both games. Unfortunately, neither performance in Week 1 or Week 2 were enough to snag a victory. Even in the loss, Garrett Mullen had a strong game to lead the crew’s Offense with 18 points, while Captain Blake Schwartz did his part and scored 17 to help keep his guys in this game. Next up for Team AEPi SO is a match-up against #5 Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) (1-1) who will also be looking to shake off a tough Week 2 loss.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) – 0-2

Team AEPi FR and Captain Griffin Lowy were unable to get rolling on offense at Twin Lakes on Sunday night, as they lost a tough low scoring affair, 65-56. Even in a losing effort, Garrett Mullen scored 18 points, Captain Griffin Lowy had 17 points and Brenda Sernick chipped in with 12. Team AEPi FR battled with an older JR squad from Delta Chi on Sunday night but came up a bit short in what was a very good Game. While they are off to a slow start they have played very good teams to begin this season. Unfortunately for them, they are going to have another tough test (as the All Sports League is very deep) with an undefeated #4 Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) (2-0) in Week 3.

Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) – 0-2

Dropping out of the Week 2 Power Rankings is Team Kappa Sig JR led by Captain Luke Mailliard. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) blew out Team Kappa Sig JR on Sunday night by a final score of 83-40. Team Kappa Sig JR were unable to put up much of a defensive effort in this game, allowing 83 points. The 83 points allowed were the most by any team so far this season (that was a legal game). They also were not able to muster up much on the offensive end, scoring only 40 points. The leading scorer for Team Kappa Sig JR was Ryan Haskell who scored 13 of those points. The scheduling gods have not been very kind to Team Kappa Sig JR early in this season as they’ve had to play the #1 and #3 ranked teams the first two weeks. Regardless of who they must play, they’ll still need much more production on both ends of the court if they want to get their first win in Week 3. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) (1-1) are next up on the docket on Sunday evening.

Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) – 0-2

Team ZBT SO and captain Blake Weltman forfeited for the second week in a row. They unfortunately did not have enough bodies available once again to field a squad on Sunday evening and must work themselves out of a 0-2 hole. Next up for Team ZBT SO is a contest against #1 Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) (2-0).

Week 2 is in the books! Good luck to all in Week 3!
