2018 Bloomington Hoops – Week 3 (Feb. 18)

By
Updated: February 22, 2018

On Sunday evening we had another great week of basketball in the Bloomington Hoops League! Don’t look now, but only three teams remain that have a big fat ZERO in the loss column through the first three weeks. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) and Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) have both won three straight games to start their 2018 campaign and are starting to look like the teams we expected them to be heading into the 2018 season. These two squads have a huge matchup against one another in Week 4 that will certainly have major implications down the road in terms of playoff seedings. Meanwhile, Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) and Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) early season struggles continue, while the 3-0 Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) are still rolling and still undefeated. Week 4 will be the more than half way point (can you believe it?) for the regular season. This is the time in the season where teams start/stop making stands and intentions known. This league is so evenly balanced in terms of talent and style, you can’t help but wonder which team(s) will start to cement their names at the top of our standings. With three weeks down and in the books, here’s how we view the league’s current power structure in the Bloomington Hoops League.

2. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) – 3-0

With a score of 59-43, Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) got a very important and huge W over Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe), to remain undefeated this season. The win in the Week 2 Game of the Week also moves these guys up into the #2 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings. This team really buckled down in this contest, emerging victorious, despite scoring less than their average points per game of 67.3. Cameron Jon Weikart had a solid performance to lead the squad’s attack with 18 points. Grant Dodenhoff also have a very nice night putting up 11 points while Captain Justuss Boice also contributed with 10 points to help their squad win their third straight game to start the 2018 campaign. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) will have another tough test on Sunday night and will look to remain unbeaten as they pair up against #3 Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) (3-0) in what will be our Week 3 Game of the Week!

3. Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) – 3-0

By the final score of 74-70, Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) squeezed by Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) on Sunday night, to maintain a zero in the loss column and move up into the #3 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings. They really came out firing on all cylinders, beating their points per game average of 67.0. Mathew Paligraf had a monster game to guide the team’s Offense with 31 points. He wasn’t the only guy that had a huge night for Team Delts JR on Sunday night as Charlie Coffman also put up 20 big points of his own. Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) will look to stay undefeated next Sunday with a showdown versus #2 and undefeated Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) (3-0) in what will be our Week 3 Game of the Week!

4. Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) – 2-1

Moving all the way up into the #4 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings is Team Kappa Sig JR, led by their experienced Captain, Ryan Brennan. Team Kappa Sig JR recorded a very solid victory by the final score of 55-45 over Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi). This team fought hard on both ends of the court for this contest, earning the W, despite scoring less than their average points per game of 68.7. Christopher Casaburo and Travis Katona both had good showings on Sunday night to steer their club’s Offense, scoring 17 points apiece. Connor Haxton also chipped in with 10 points to help secure his team’s second consecutive victory. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) (1-2) are next up on the docket for Team Kappa Sig JR, as they look to keep the winning and climbing of the Standings/Rankings going.

5. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) – 2-1

Dropping from the #4 to the #5 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings is Team Sammy SR, led by gritty Captain Jack O Keefe. Unfortunately for Team Sammy SR, these guys really struggled to get it going on Offense in this one, scoring less than their average of 68.3 PPG this season. By the final score of 59-43, Team Sammy SR lost a tough one to #2 Team Evans Scholar SO in our Week 2 Game of the Week. The leading scorer for Team Sammy SR was Sam Gubernikoff who accounted for 10 points. All 8 of their players were able to get on the scoreboard on Sunday night, unfortunately they were stifled by a suffocating Team Evans Scholar SO D all night. Next up for Team Sammy SR is a showdown against Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) (1-2), as they will look to shake off this disappointing loss and get back into the winner’s circle.

6. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) – 1-2

After two weeks and two losses to begin their 2018 season, Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) must not have been feeling too great about themselves. Then Week 3 came along and my, what a difference one week makes! Team AEPi SO smashed Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel). Team AEPi SO recorded a blowout win by the final score of 83-54, their first of the year. The win moves them up into the #6 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings. They really brought their A game in this one, crushing their PPG average of 65.0. Special shout out to Steve Levine who had a HUGE performance to steer the group’s attack with 34 points. The 34 points was a league high so far this year! Captain Blake Schwartz also poured in 20 points and now is tied for second place for the leagues scoring title with 20.3 points per game. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) (2-1) are next up on the schedule in Week 3 for Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz), as they look to build on this massive victory.

7. Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) – 1-2

Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) really struggled to get rolling in terms of scoring in their Week 3 game against Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan), scoring fewer than their average of 51.7 PPG for the year. By the final score of 55-45, Team Delts SR lost a close one and dropped their second game on the 2018 campaign. The loss also drops them one spot to #7 in the Week 3 Power Rankings. Captain and floor general Matt Braschi carried his squad in this one with 16 points while Bento put up his second straight double-digit performance, scoring 11. Next up for Team Delts SR is a battle versus Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) (0-3), as they look to bounce back from this loss and get back on the winning track.

8. Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) – 1-2

Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) dominated Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) in Week 3. Team Delts SO really struggled to get it going on both ends of the court in this one, scoring fewer than their average of 62.7 PPG for the year and allowing 83 points to a team that came into this game that was averaging just 56 PPG. Even in the losing effort, Benjamin A Feldman had an amazing game to lead the group’s scoring attack with 28 points. The 28 points was third best in the league this week. Captain Brandon Barthel also had a solid performance in this one, scoring 12 points, but unfortunately they just did not get enough contributions from anyone else to make this game competitive. #1 Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) (3-0) are next up on the schedule for Team Delts SO as they attempt to rebound from this lopsided loss.

9. Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) – 1-2

Heading into Week 3, things were starting to look bleak for Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard). They had lost two tough games to start the season 0-2. They obviously had some sort of behind the doors meeting or something because they absolutely dominated the competition on the Defensive end of the court in their Week 3 game. By the count of 47-43, Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) got a W, their first of the season. The win also moves these guys from the unranked and into the #9 spot in the Week 3 Power Rankings. These guys really stepped up on D in this game as we just mentioned, beating their season points against average of 60.7 PPG. Captain and big man Luke Mailliard had a nice week to spearhead the team’s offensive attack by scoring 16 points. The 16 points now brings the Captain’s season average to 10.7 PPG. Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) (0-3) are next up on the schedule this Sunday for Team Kappa Sig JR as they look to start their first winning streak.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) – 0-3

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) really gave everything they had on Sunday night despite losing their Week 3 game to Team Delts JR (Grant Miller), topping their average of 61.3 points per game for the season. By the final score of 74-70, Team AEPi lost a heartbreaker to stay winless on the 2018 season and drops their record to 0-3. Captain Griffin Lowy led the way, putting up 18 points for his crew. Salomon Levy had a nice night chipping in 9 points while Ben Bizar continued his strong start to the season, scoring 8. Team AEPi FR will look to break their winless streak on Sunday night with a match-up against Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) (1-2). Important game coming up for both squads.

Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) – 0-3

Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) and Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) had a defensive battle, combining for just 99 points. Unfortunately for Team ZBT SO, they were able to only muster up 37 of those 99 points. Falling by a final score of 62-37, Team ZBT dropped their third consecutive loss to start their 2018 campaign. The good news for these guys is that they still have three more games to make an impact on where they will be seeded come playoff time. They really need to buckle down and work hard on both ends of the court and they will start to see some positive results. They have the talent to compete with others in this league. Zach Lavine went for 10 points in this one and they will need to continue to get that kind of production out of him to turn this season around. Coming up on Sunday night, these guys battle against Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) (1-2) as they attempt to get their first win on the 2018 campaign. A win in Week 4 can move them into the Week 4 Power Rankings.

Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) – 1-2

Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) and Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) competed in a game where the defenses absolutely dominated, totaling just 90 total points. With a score of 47-43, Team ZBT SR dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 1-2 on the young season. The leading scorer for Team ZBT SR was none other than Captain Matt Siegel, who went for 14 points. Unfortunately for Matt and Co., they were shut down everywhere else by a stifling Team Kappa Sig JR D on Sunday night. This game could have gone either way and will be a game that can have major implications down the road come playoff time. They must forget about this loss as soon as possible as Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) (2-1) are next up on the calendar for Team ZBT SR. They will need to get back to the drawing board and try to fix their offensive woes and quickly bounce back from this critical loss.

That’s it for Week 3. We’ll see everyone back on the court on Sunday!
