2018 Bloomington Hoops – Week 4 (Feb. 25)

By
Updated: March 1, 2018

Week 4 in the Bloomington Hoops league brought us some very entertaining basketball. When all was said and done this week, we were left with only 2 teams that still do not have a blemish on their records. Through Sunday’s games, there are 10 teams with at least one loss and 8 teams with at least two losses. 6 of these teams will play a game within the group this week, with the Kappa Sig squads going mono e mono in our Week 5 Game of the Week! Being that this is the final game before we take a looooong break, every team will be looking to head into intermission with some winning momentum on their side. Hopefully Week 5 will help sort out the jumble behind the top two teams in the rankings. Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) and Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) remain the cream of the crop.

Power Rankings

1. Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) – 4-0

Tougher games are on the horizon, but their win in Week 4 doesn’t get much easier than that. Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) forfeited to Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) as they did not have enough available players to field a legal team. The win makes it four in a row for Team Delta Chi and keeps them in the #1 spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings. Coming up on Sunday, Team Delta Chi JR will face off against Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) (1-3) in an attempt to remain undefeated and continue their firm hold onto the #1 spot.

2. Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) – 4-0

Moving up into the #2 spot following their massive victory in our Week 4 Game of the Week is non-other than Grant Miller’s Team Delts JR. Team Delts JR and Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) competed in what turned out to be an absolute nail-biter. Team Delts JR got another tally in the win column by the score of 71-68, to remain unbeaten this year. They really buckled down in this game, emerging victorious despite allowing more points than their season-long points against average of 61.8 points per game. Ryan Ruff had a tremendous night to steer the group’s attack with 27 points. Matthew Schultheis also had a great night posting 15 big points to bring his season average up to 16 PPG. On Sunday night, Team Delts JR take on Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) (1-3) to try to remain perfect and potentially take over the #1 spot before they head into the extended break.

3. Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) – 3-1

Dropping one spot in the Week 5 Power Rankings is Team Evans Scholar SO after their gut wrenching loss in the Week 3 Game of the Week to Team Delts JR (Grant Miller). Team Delts JR and Team Evans Scholar were extremely comparable in this contest. Team Evans Scholar SO struggled to stop anything on defense however in this game, giving up more points than their average of 51.5 points against per game this year. The leading scorer for Team Evans Scholar SO was Cameron Jon Weikart who scored 18 points. That was Cameron’s second straight 18-point performance to bring his season average up to just shy of 15 PPG. Eric Martin also provided 15 important points, but it just wasn’t enough to get by a very determined and gritty Team Delts JR squad. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) (1-3) are next up on the docket in Week 5 for Team Evans Scholar SO, as they attempt to bounce back from this disappointing loss.

4. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) – 3-1

Captain Jack O Keefe’s Sammy SR squad bounced back very nicely in Week 4 following their tough Week 3 loss, squeezing by Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) 75-74 in what turned out to be the most entertaining game of the night. These guys worked hard for this crucial third victory and earned a hard-fought W. They battled for this game, emerging victorious despite allowing more points than their season-long points against average of 45.5 PPG. Sam Gubernikoff had a very strong game to lead the group’s scoring attack with 23 points. Captain Jack had his usual strong outing, dropping 18 crucial points to carry his squad to this very important victory. Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) (1-3) are next up on the calendar for Team Sammy SR where they’ll look to get into the top #3 in the Week 5 Power Rankings before they head into break.

5. Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) – 2-2

Our biggest movers in the Week 4 Power Rankings is Team Kappa Sig JR, led by their determined big man and Captain Luke Mailliard. Captain Luke and company were extremely close to having to take a tough forfeit loss due to not having enough available bodies, but Luke was able to rally some troops and walked away with the huge Week 4 victory. By the final score of 64-53, Team Kappa Sig JR beat Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) to get their record back to .500 and find themselves in the #5 spot in the Week 4 Power Rankings. These guys really brought it in this game, beating their PPG average of 48.8. Luke Mailliard had an outstanding week to lead the team’s Offense with 22 points and brings his season average to 13.5 PPG. Next up for Team Kappa Sig JR before we head into the long break is a showdown versus housemates Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) (2-2) in what will be our Week 5 Game of the Week!

6. Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) – 2-2

Team Kappa Sig JR (Ryan Brennan) took a crushing defeat in Week 4, losing to Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) 92-53. Team Kappa Sig JR really didn’t have their best stuff in terms of scoring in this game, scoring less than their average of 64.8 PPG for the season. Team ZBT SR was suffocating all night long and these guys just could not get many stops on the defensive end either. The team’s leading scorer, who also happened to be the leading scorer for Team Kappa Sig JR on Sunday night was Connor C Haxton, who had 13 points. They just could not find much offense anywhere else. Next up for Team Kappa Sig JR is a battle against their brothers, Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) (2-2), as they try to quickly shake off this very tough loss in our Week 5 Game of the Week.

7. Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) – 2-2

Moving up from the depths of the unranked, Team ZBT SR and Captain Matt Siegel picked up an extremely important second victory on Sunday evening to bring their record back to .500 and up into the #7 spot in the Week 4 Power Rankings. Team ZBT SR demolished Team Kappa Sig JR by a final score of 92-53. These guys really stepped up in this game and came out absolutely on fire from everywhere on the court, topping their points per game average of 58.5. Jeff Visoky made his season debut on Sunday night and had a gigantic game to help earn the crew the win with 26 points. Zach Levine (not to be confused with the Chicago Bulls Zach LaVine) also stepped up in this one and had his best performance so far this season dropping 15 points to help his guys earn the lopsided victory. Next up for Team ZBT SR is a throw down against Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) (0-4). A win in Week 5 can potentially move them into the Top-5 in the Week 15 Power Rankings. What a difference a couple of weeks make.

8. Team AEPi SO (Blake Schwartz) – 1-3

Team AEPi SO, led by Captain Blake Schwartz and Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) battled all the way to the last second on Sunday. By the final score of 75-74, Team AEPi SO lost a heartbreaker and dropped their record to 1-3. Unfortunately for Team AEPi SO, they really didn’t have their best showing on defense in this one, allowing more points than their average of 64.5 PAPG for the year. Steve Levine had a gargantuan game to lead the squad with 30 points. This was the second straight week that Steve dropped 30 plus points and has led the league in scoring the last two weeks. They’ll need to continue to get these types of performances out of Steve if they plan to get their record back to .500 by the time postseason comes along. Next up for Team AEPi SO is a battle against Team Evans Scholar SO (Justuss Boice) (3-1), in a crucial match-up before we head into break.

9. Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) – 1-3

Team ZBT SO and Captain Blake Weltman put together their best performance on the season and smashed Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi). By the count of 83-58, Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) got a dominating W, their first of the year. They really brought their A game in this one, topping their points per game average of 30.0. Michael Davis had an amazing week to help earn the team the W with 25 points. Zach Lavine (to be confused with the Chicago Bulls Zach LaVine) had his best offensive performance on the season dropping 21 points to help his guys earn their important first victory. Next up for Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) is a showdown against undefeated #2 Team Delts JR (Grant Miller) (4-0) as they’ll look to make it two in a row.

Rest of the Pack (Alphabetical Order)

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) – 0-4

Team AEPi FR (Griffin Lowy) struggled to get it going in this game, scoring less than their average of 59.3 points per game for the year. As a result, Captain Griffin Lowy and crew dropped their fourth straight game, losing to Team Kappa Sig JR (Luke Mailliard) 64-53. The leading scorer for Team AEPi FR was leader and floor general, Captain Griffin Lowy who scored 15 points. Jordan Zaroff also continued his solid play on Sunday night, scoring 13 points to bring his season average over 10 PPG. These guys battle hard every Sunday and will get better results down the road. Coming up on Sunday night, Team AEPi FR tries to put a 1 in the win column with a matchup against Team ZBT SR (Matt Siegel) (2-2).

Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) – 1-3

Team Delts SO (Brandon Barthel) forfeited to Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) as they did not have enough available bodies to field a legal team. Team Sammy SR (Jack O Keefe) (3-1) are next up on the schedule for Team Delts SO, as they look to get regroup and get back on track before they head into break.

Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) – 1-3

Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) suffered a very disappointing loss in Week 4, falling to Team ZBT SO (Blake Weltman) by a final score of 83-58. Team Delts SR and captain Matt Braschi didn’t have their best showing on the defensive end in this one, surrendering more points than their average of 63.5 PAPG this season. On the offensive end, Captain Matt led the charge once again for his crew, dropping 17 points. Bento also had his third straight double-double, scoring 11 points to provide some offensive spark. Unfortunately, they did not get much support anywhere else and were unable to contain a hot shooting Team ZBT SO squad. Next up for Team Delts SR (Matt Braschi) is a showdown against #1 and undefeated Team Delta Chi JR (Noah Berkowitz) (4-0), as they look to get back on track and start compiling some wins.

Week 4 is in the books. We’ll see everyone back on the court on Sunday night!
